I thought there were fine plans to bin this nonsense

So sick of having to plan around it and buy overpriced extra stuff I don't need

It’s really not that hard to plan around.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 18/06/2025 16:31

It is a pain in the arse

we flew from Heathrow a few weeks ago and they weren’t doing it. Didn’t have to take anything out of our bags like ipads etc

SoScarletItWas · 18/06/2025 16:31

When they get the 3D scanners, for a start.

I never buy stuff at the airport where it is indeed overpriced. I take what brands I can’t live without decanted into travel bottles and then buy shower gel if I need to when I arrive.

(I mean if the hotel / apartment doesn’t provide it, I know I need to wash!!)

OneNaiceSnail · 18/06/2025 16:31

I thought they were lifting restrictions this year? My daughter discovered gruum products when she was going on a school trip to Madrid. They’re cheap, give loads of stuff away for free with your first order, they do shampoo/conditioner soap bars etc. It gave her more room for make up 🙄

murasaki · 18/06/2025 16:33

I just bought little pots and bottles and decanted stuff into them. One off spend. Sure, I'd like to see it go, but it wasn't as expensive as you make out.

It’s really not that hard to plan around.

It requires different toothpaste, different face cleanser, different moisturiser, different serums, different SUN protection, I can't take a bottle of sparkling water I have to pay £3 for one instead. Don't be a mule just because you can, yknow.

Why are you buying over priced extra stuff you don’t need? Check in anything big or if you “need” a lot of stuff. if your only carrying carry on, plan, decant creams, shampoos lotions. The plastic bags provided can accommodate a lot.

Whats the difference in cost of buying extra “expensive” items to checking in a bag?

What's weird is in my airport you don't need the fiddly little bag and it goes through the fancy scanner but it's still max 100ml. Last time I saw them take a lovely snow globe off a tourist just because it was slightly over. Enraging.

It's a total pain! The airports with the new scanners started by saying you no longer were limited to 100ml but then it was undone unfortunately - off to google why?!

MauriceTheMussel · 18/06/2025 16:35

It’s been nearly 24 years. Shirley (IYKYK) they could have developed the tech and scanners by now

Hmm well £80 for a round trip isn't cheap either way is it? Then there's the unnecessary fannying around to collect a bag I don't need. The fact that they can't organise their way out of this is I think indicative of the world just being a bit shit.

I’d be more enraged by terrorists blowing up the plain than following a annoying but essential safety rule.

And even when they did work, no guarantee the airport you’d fly back from would be the same!

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 18/06/2025 16:36

Well like i say heathrow don’t have any restrictions….no idea about any other airport but fingers crosssed

Yes these are the only two options.

Wasn’t it said that there was a technical issue with the scanners which needed sorting?
We flew out of Heathrow in March and had to remove everything from bags, electricals and plastic bag of liquids. However on the return from LA I forgot to remove my bag of liquids, my bag was pulled aside for a check but it was because of the large quantity of Peanut Butter M&Ms that I was bringing back. The packets were swabbed and my bag of liquids was ignored.

Heathrow still has the 100ml restriction in place.

SamDeanCas · 18/06/2025 16:38

Just buy travel sized bottles and put your stuff from home in them. Or buy when you get to sky side at the airport, or when you reach your destination

I was so embarrassed. I had 3 1lb bags. I tried telling the security officer that we can’t get them in the UK and my sons love them but he didn’t look like he believed me.

yes having to do this is the theme of the thread

Gatwick didn’t need toiletries out of the bag either the other week. Can’t remember if there was a 100ml restriction as I’d packed for that anyway.

It’s clearly not essential if some airports don’t have this rule

I think that seems like a normal and reasonable quantity.

I hate this rule - difficult to get everything down to 100ml .. so I usually just check bag in as I can’t be bothered with the faff . Also seems ridiculous when every country imposes different rules - some you don’t stick to 100ml , some you take shoes off , some belts and watches , some not . Some electronics out , some don’t care . All seems rather pointless if it’s not consistent!!
