I thought there were fine plans to bin this nonsense

So sick of having to plan around it and buy overpriced extra stuff I don't need

Hardly a big deal is it? Just buy travel size bottles or keep small ones and decant. I’ve been using the same ones for years. I just squirt, scoop or pump in what I use in the 24 hours before travelling, estimating how much I need for the duration of the trip, then bring the empties home. Rinse (literally) and repeat. Costs nothing extra, no stress at all.

curious79 · 18/06/2025 16:42

Some of the airports don’t do it, including I’m pretty sure some of the upper-class security checks. Depends on the machines they have available. We’re close to it ending though.

I’d be more enraged by terrorists blowing up the plain than following a annoying but essential safety rule.

Exactly!

Plus I don’t think it’s that big a deal? I have prescription creams that I really need (not just cosmetic stuff) and it’s not that hard to decant stuff. Or check in a case!

Id rather be safe.

And bring a reusable water bottle - every airport I’ve been to has a place to refill them just after security. No one needs their water to be sparkling - plain water is what we evolved to drink and is a much healthier choice.

Fragmentedbrain · 18/06/2025 16:37

Yes these are the only two options.

So what do you suggest?

its sounds like your making it harder than it needs to be. Surely one person dosnt need all that extra stuff. As a family of 5 all having our own likes and dislikes in products as well as eczema and psoriasis creams and ointments we manage putting everything we all need in 1 check in bag and never had to pay £80 for the pleasure.

If you want to just carry carry on, then but certain stuff when you arrive. If you can afford to pay for an overseas holiday you should be factoring these costs in.

My local airport had 2L liquid limit and no need for 100ml bottles for a hot minute between 2023-2024 but then was an updated eu law and they had to go back to 100ml bottles. Such a shame.

murasaki · 18/06/2025 16:43

How much serum do you need????? Give your face a break while on holiday.

More because of the sun and the dehydration on the plane.

Edit: sorry, meant to quote 16:43.

New scanners are coming in but I think it's next summer before they are all up and running.

It’s really not that hard to plan around.

It is if you have a skin condition. It’s not just decanting them into small bottles, it’s that you also have a tiny plastic bag and anything that won’t fit get discarded. My condition psoriasis plus flare ups of dermatitis requires a special shampoo, ointment, specific fragrance free products such as cleanser and shower gel, foundation to cover up etc. So then I have no space for toothpaste / deo etc. for short trips it seems unfair that I have to pay to check in a bag or buy things at the airport / at destination. And then no space to bring them home even!

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 18/06/2025 16:36

Well like i say heathrow don’t have any restrictions….no idea about any other airport but fingers crosssed

I have been in/out of Heathrow in the last few weeks, you no longer need to unpack your hand luggage into gray plastic trays but I believe the 100 ml,imit is still in force

Katemax82 · 18/06/2025 16:47

Isn't the restriction just for hand luggage?

dynamiccactus · 18/06/2025 16:48

TruthOrAlethiometer · 18/06/2025 16:29

It’s really not that hard to plan around.

It really depends what you need. Prescription medicines are exempt, but you might need other things and you are only allowed that tiny little bag, so it can be really hard to fit everything in.

They were ready to lift the restrictions and already had at some airports like Cologne and Jersey, but then decided the machines weren't good enough after all. It cost hundreds of millions as well.

Thistooshallpass. · 18/06/2025 16:41

I hate this rule - difficult to get everything down to 100ml .. so I usually just check bag in as I can’t be bothered with the faff . Also seems ridiculous when every country imposes different rules - some you don’t stick to 100ml , some you take shoes off , some belts and watches , some not . Some electronics out , some don’t care . All seems rather pointless if it’s not consistent!!

The inconsistency is deliberate so you don't quite know what you are going to encounter and can't game the system.

LegalAlienated · 18/06/2025 16:49

My biggest issue is suncream. The brand I buy here at a good price is the one I trust and it comes in 150-200 ml bottles. Touristy places sell the cheap stuff at inflated prices.

At least now you can take empty bottles for water.

AliceMcK · 18/06/2025 16:49

murasaki · 18/06/2025 16:33

I just bought little pots and bottles and decanted stuff into them. One off spend. Sure, I'd like to see it go, but it wasn't as expensive as you make out.

Exactly, I think I paid £1.99 at homebargins for ours, my DCs have used them for school trips and holidays. I use them for weekends away. I also keep samples and miniatures I may have bought or been gifted and just use those for holidays. I can get a weeks worth of face creams in those tiny pots, day, night, cleanser one for each cream and they barely take any space.

It’s been nearly 24 years. Shirley (IYKYK) they could have developed the tech and scanners by now

Maurice RIP (iykyk) 😞

I think the tech exists in a lot of airports but not in all, so parity has been agreed aligning with the lowest common denominator iyswim?

Isn't the restriction just for hand luggage?

Yes but a lot of people (me included) don't want to check in bags if they can help it to avoid losing them, having them sent to the wrong place or just having to hang around for ages after arriving for them to be delivered. The last time I checked in a bag I waited 90 minutes for it to arrive so decided never again and only have hand luggage now.

Isobel201 · 18/06/2025 16:56

I checked where we're going, and they provide body wash and shampoo, so I'm not going to bother bringing any - less risk of having bottles leak in the hold and nothing extra at security to pull out.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 18/06/2025 16:59

cheapshoes · 18/06/2025 16:38

Heathrow still has the 100ml restriction in place.

It didn't a few weeks ago 🤷🏻

maybe they were trialing something ….no one was taking anything out of their bags 🤔

maybe they were just assuming that everyone only has 100ml of stuff

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 18/06/2025 17:01

We went to jordan years ago, got to security and we were making the children drink their water before we ditched the bottles and security said it was fine for them to take the bottles through 😀

You don't have to take the 100ml out of your bag at airports with the new scanners but you are still limited to 100ml in your bag if that makes sense.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 18/06/2025 17:01

Yes it does make sense, thanks

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 18/06/2025 17:02

How can they tell its only 100ml ?

theemmadilemma · 18/06/2025 17:04

I’m a fairly regular traveler and I do the decant thing, plus leave half my skin care regimen at home because it’s too much of a faff, but I do wish you could just bring what you need!
