Mini cooper convertible

DH and I are having an argument.
Booking a car for our holiday. DH wants to hire a Mini Cooper One convertible.
We are 4 adults, one who is 6ft3 tall.
I think we won't fit in, but DH is adamant we will, because the Mini web site says it fits "4 friends".
I pulled up next to one at some traffic lights yesterday and the back seats looked practically non existent!
Does anyone actually own one and can settle this please?
Thank you.

ps - the 6ft 3 person won't be driving.

My DP has a Mini Cooper (not convertable) and I seriously struggle to get in and out of the back seat (it has 3 doors not 5), the leg room is not great and I am 5ft 7 and not 6ft 3!.

beanfeast · 17/06/2025 14:22

I have one. It would be very tight for the people in the back and you'd have no space for luggage. The boot is very small.

User415373 · 17/06/2025 14:23

You might all swipe in but what about your bags etc?!
You'd all look quite funny though 🤣

Bluevelvetsofa · 17/06/2025 14:23

I had a Cooper S convertible and until I sat in the back of it, I didn’t realise how small and claustrophobic it was. We were helping my son move and he and DH were in the front. I’m 5’3 and it felt way too small. Fine for children, but that’s about it.

The boot is tiny too. I’m with you. Too small for four adults.

blanketsnuggler · 17/06/2025 14:24

We'll get a taxi from airport, then pick up the hire car from the accommodation, so luggage won't be an issue. I'm more worried about DS (the tall one!)

Too small. Even worse if the roof is up.

GasPanic · 17/06/2025 14:26

Not big enough.

I hired a convertible in a hot desert once. It was fun for a bit. But the relentless sun made it less fun for the majority of the time - if you are in a hot country you won't have the air con on effectively while the top is down.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 17/06/2025 14:26

Unless your DS has detachable knees he's not going to fit

blanketsnuggler · 17/06/2025 14:26

OMG. DH has just texted me that he's booked it.

Well if the weather's alright you can take the top off to give enough room for his head and he can sling his legs over the window for leg room. Perfect.

blanketsnuggler · 17/06/2025 14:27

FFS.

cant the other two adults just get their own car?

GinnyandGeorgia · 17/06/2025 14:28

The smaller people will have to squeeze in the back unfortunately!

Purplecatshopaholic · 17/06/2025 14:31

Well if he’s booked it, I hope you make him sit in the back. I have had two of these - great cars, loved them. Plenty of room - in the front. The back is tiny.

Family of four. DC (20 and 23) coming with us as a last family holiday probably.
DC can't be insured with the holiday car, even though they both have full UK liciences. We just need a bigger car. DH is being deliberately adamant. I'm going to show him this thread.

Or alternatively the idiot who ordered it can be forced to cram themselves forward in the seat to ensure the people in the back have as much room as possible.

Anyway, it will probably be immediately apparent that it is unsuitable and you will have to go back and change it.

cheesycheesy · 17/06/2025 14:31

You’d look like youre in a clown car

blanketsnuggler · 17/06/2025 14:34

Good point pp made about the aircon too.
With the hood down, they'll be no aircon, with the hood up, DS won't fit in.
Arshole. He's based his decision purely on the MINI advertising.

I'd advise not to hire a convertible in a hot country, regardless. 4 adults in a mini will not be comfortable.

DonewhatIcando · 17/06/2025 14:38

Nope, I had a Mini Cooper convertible.
There's literally no leg room in the back, there's no where to put your feet.
I'm 5'7" so not overly tall, no-one could sit behind me when I'm driving.
I could fit one person in the back but only if they sat sideways with their feet up.
I've got a 5 door Mini Cooper now, loads of room.
Are you going somewhere hot when you hire a car?
We hired a convertible in Greece last year, couldn't put the roof down as we just roasted, roof up, windows up, air-con on full blast

Yup. Greek Island. 10 days.

sigh.

Absolutely unsuitable for 4 adults (having rented one for 2 adults) in the past. Boot is also tiny so when going out and about on holiday just the 2 of use we ended up using the back seat for storage.

Great car, but you need to think of it as a 2+2 (ie 2 adults and two small children) rather than 4 adults.

6 foot 3 person will definitely need to sit in the front seat, shifted right back, with the roof down all the time 🤔👍

Herberty · 17/06/2025 14:57

I had one and loved it but the back is tiny - regular complaints when I gave a lift to a 6 footer - he said his neck was never the same again as he could not put his head upright if we had the roof down . With the roof up he could lift his head up - just felt the leg circulation was cut off at the knee as there is no leg room at all .

The boot fits two supermarket shopping bags - will be a tight fit even if you are not using it for the airport run.

Those in the front will love it ....
