I agree it shouldn’t be pushed on people that don’t want it. I also fully agree it’s like a cult.
Saying that, I think having now taken WLI myself after years of struggling, I can see why people want to let other people know the benefits they’ve felt. For the people like me who have emotional and complex relationships with food, who can’t simply just decide to eat less despite desperately wanting to and knowing they should, the life changing effect of WLI cant be overstated. It’s given me the chance to live life like “normal” people would, without spending every minute thinking about and obsessing over food. I didn’t even realise my body worked differently to other people’s until I started taking it. And for me, I don't generally question anything else a doctor prescribes, so this is no different. If my friend was struggling with heavy periods for example, I’d happily recommend the tranexamic acid I was prescribed and tell her to ask her doctor about it. This is no different, in my opinion.
The “help” out there for people like me prior to this was NHS weight management services, which just reiterate move more, eat less, in various formats. For someone who has been obese for years, I can assure you we know this. None of us are surprised to hear that crisps aren’t as good for us as an apple. And actually WLI really do address the reasons I overeat. It’s completely changed the kinds of foods I want to eat. I’m sure everyone who’s putting them down knows already, but the injections themselves don’t make you lose weight, you still have to eat in a calorie defecit and exercise. It just makes it all more possible as your digestion system slows down and your food noise disappears.
If you’re able to do it without WLI, incredible, they aren’t really for you. For people like me, they’re literally a life saver.
