@AllTheChaos I worked out I stay the same on 1500 to 1700 - gain above that and lose at 1000 to 1250

I’m similar but need a bit less for maintenance. Which is a shame as I love food 😂

Pinty · 17/06/2025 13:33

You have made the first positive step by weighing yourself and doing something about it.
I too was shocked when I eventually weighed myself. I refused for a long time because I didn't want to face it. The weight goes on slowly without us realising it.
I too am doing something about it it is coming if very slowly but I have lost a stone. I have a couple more to go .but I already feel so much better even though no one else has noticed!
Good luck you can do it just be patient and don't give up

ohreallyIsee · 17/06/2025 13:35

I'm the same 14st and 5ft, I've just calory counting and trying to up my activity this week. I had been ignoring the weight increase but can't any longer.

5 posts in, and someone suggests weight loss injections. 🙄

Good luck on your weight loss journey @CelticMaiden but please don't automatically start sticking this stuff in your body! At least TRY to lose it naturally with a change in your diet and doing more exercise. Just going straight to weight loss injection is not going deal with the reasons why you got to 14 stone.

I lost 3 stone 3 years ago (and kept it off) on the 5:2 diet. Brilliant way to lose weight IMO. (And I got a fitbit and have done 17-18 miles a week walking since then...) I am so much healthier now, with much more stamina. It's knocked 7-8 years off me too! I've gone from looking 3-4 years older, to 3-4 years younger.

Edited

Extensive longitudinal studies and Meta data on the subject of the ‘eat less move more’ diet VS Weight loss injections show why WLI are so much more efficient at getting over weight and obese people to a healthy weight and sustaining it

The sad facts of attempting sustainable weight loss by simple calorie control and exercise are the less than 1: 100 getting to a healthy BMI from BMI 30+. Of those VERY rare ‘1’s… 80-90% put it all back on and more within 5 years. This yo-yo dieting then adds to insulin resistance.

whereas WLI have a 60% chance of success in getting to healthy BMI. and 50% chance of regaining if you decide not to maintain on the jabs.

The difference in the odds of success . (Less than 1% vs 60%) makes it a complete no brainer !
Thats probably why people mention it at the start ! It’s logical..

Happy to be very boring and attach the links to all the studies and peer reviewed papers to support these figures .

Good for you, everyone has to start somewhere, and I think baby steps is the right way to start. It takes time to lay down good habits and change routines you've had for decades.

Can I suggest getting one of those weighing scales that measures body composition and heart health, as well as weight? I have a Withings one that records my progress on an app. It's helpful to know that, even if I haven't lost weight, I may have gained muscle, or my heart rate or vascular age have gone down. You can also keep track of waist measurements, or your menstrual cycle. Health isn’t just about weight, and it's encouraging to have a record to show how far you've come. The watch apps that record activity and sleep are also good, but I prefer having a weigh-in once a week, it keeps me motivated.

Can you get a brisk walk in every day, or cycle to work? Is there a particular 'bad habit' that you can target and banish forever? I find that doing things by degrees, then seeing results, motivates me to build on that success and find other things I can do.

Good luck!

I got weighed last week after being ill for about five weeks and I am now 14 stone, I am 5'1.5". I've lost 10 lbs. I was to quote my brother a "lard arse". I still am one, but this has kickstarted my weight loss. I'm just going to cut out crap and see how I get on.

RowsOfFlowers · 17/06/2025 14:02

I don’t think is simply calorie counting either - thyroid and hormones at play - always worth getting checked. I think eventually, I’ll have to go on Metformin

Hi there,

I am 5'3 and 12lb12 lbs, i have managed to lose 7lbs through power walking to 90s songs. I was really hoping to get down to 12stone in 8 weeks but need to get my ass in gear and do some serious calorie counting before then. Forget about the past and over eating / drinking ( well thats me ) etc , go for it OP. Now is your time. Sending you positive vibes.

Dodgejam · 17/06/2025 14:13

KT1113 · 17/06/2025 10:19

That's the same with any weight loss though. Mounjaro only works if you are in a calorie defecit. As soon as you stop being in a calorie defecit, you'll stop losing weight.

I lost 7 stone 'naturally' in 2020 by calorie counting and exercising....put 8 back on in the last 3 years!

How did you put 8 stone on in 3 years? Did you just suddenly one day decide to ramp up eating and stop moving? Or was it a health condition that contributed? @KT1113

Have you had any heart issues as a result of how sudden the gain is?

Dodgejam · 17/06/2025 14:14

Ignore me if too personal to answer!

I started eating everything I could lay my eyes on and didnt really move, yes.

I've been obese my entire life, apart from losing so much weight between March 2020 and December 2021. So I imagine I have lots of underlying weight related issues. The only 'noticeable' one is back pain. I've been lucky I think.

I have no clue why my brain won't just let me not eat. I know it's bad for me, I know the principle of less in, move more. But I have tried and failed more times than I can count. I get home from work and binge, even when I don't want to.

I have recently started WLI and have lost 2 stone 5lbs since May 2nd 2025. I have 0 issue losing weight, it's not medical, it's putting too much in my mouth. The WLI have completely changed the way my brain works, I don't even think about food from one minute to the next now and crave healthy food and water. I'm hoping this is it for good, but obviously not banking on it!

I’m 4ft 11 and was 10 stones, I suddenly decided one day that I really needed to lose weight. I started running doing the couch to 5k and that helped but cutting down the amount of junk I was eating was the biggest thing.

It did take a while for the weight to come off, probably around 18 months, but I’ve kept it off for over 9 years now as they were sustainable changes that I made, I still run regularly 11 years on.

Good luck it’s not easy but you can do it.

Freshstartyear25 · 17/06/2025 14:34

I was almost 14 stone last year at 5 Ft 4. I started the whole weight loss journey in May last year and just over a year later, I’m just under 10st with a healthy BMI. It was a slog, bought some kettlebells and dumbbells as I wanted to make sure I was weight training and used the TDEE calculator to work out my calorie deficit. It was long, many days were not enjoyable at the start but I’m in a happy place now. Still exercising

Jazzyyyy · 17/06/2025 14:38

I put on over 1.5 stone in 2021 and I’m only 5ft 2 so I can see how someone could put on 8 stone in 3 years, if I’d kept going the way I was in 2022 I think I’d have kept on putting two stone on every year. It’s not that ‘hard’ if you consistently overeat and don’t move.

My maintenance calories are around 1500 calories and I was eating around 2500+ most days. I’m actually surprised I didn’t put on more weight than I did.

It may be excessive or trigger eating disorders for some but I weigh myself almost every day. I find it’s helpful to see the fluctuations throughout the month and it keeps me on track.

I prefer that to a weekly or monthly weigh in which can sometimes skew things if you happen to be on your period that day, or you’ve ate more than usual the day before.

The daily weigh ins feel less daunting to me and I can keep an eye on things.

lol…That’s nothing. There was another thread where the OP specifically asked for non-WLI/surgery suggestions and yet there were several pages recommending Mounjaro etc.

When the OP re-stated she didn’t want weight loss injections some of them doubled down and kept pushing it . Over half the thread was clogged up with “take Mounjaro”

It was wild 😆 almost MLM or even cult-like behaviour.

Did you suddenly decide to stop watching what you eat or was it a slow ebb?

the fact you’re so honest I think means your chances of long term success going forward is so so much higher than those that seems to lay the blame at everything but eating too much and not moving enough.

Jazzyyyy · 17/06/2025 15:08

Justchillinhere · 17/06/2025 13:22

You can do it, I was near enough the same as you, I lost 5 stones by doing about 25k steps daily, dancing at home for an hour would give me 10k, I got a smart watch and competed with others in Fitbit and Stridekick groups. I made meals high in protein and used high energy spices. I love walking still, it's got so many health benefits.

That’s amazing, would you sharing how tall you are and how long it took for the weight to come?

I love dancing and walking me I usually only get 6,000 steps in for every hour danced or walked though. I should still do it more!

Kuretake · 17/06/2025 15:13

I would strongly suggest adding some weights to your routine. I am a bit evangelical about it but it has been absolutely transformational for me as a woman in my 40s. I am the fittest I have ever been and everything is easier when you're stronger. I combine it with running (which feels a million times better when you've got strong legs) and some swimming.

RedJamDoughnut · 17/06/2025 15:20

Well done, remain consistent.
I'm 5.5 was over 15 stone
Started running, massive reduction in calories.
Tried the fat jabs but the didn't seem to stop the hunger.
2 and a half years l hit 8.5 stone
Face looked awful, haggered & tired increased weight & it looks better.
It's a fight to remain at 9 stone. But worth it for the new wardrobe & confidence.

That’s less than a pound a week, for some people over eating a small amount can do that.

KT1113 · 17/06/2025 15:38

I agree it shouldn’t be pushed on people that don’t want it. I also fully agree it’s like a cult.

Saying that, I think having now taken WLI myself after years of struggling, I can see why people want to let other people know the benefits they’ve felt. For the people like me who have emotional and complex relationships with food, who can’t simply just decide to eat less despite desperately wanting to and knowing they should, the life changing effect of WLI cant be overstated. It’s given me the chance to live life like “normal” people would, without spending every minute thinking about and obsessing over food. I didn’t even realise my body worked differently to other people’s until I started taking it. And for me, I don't generally question anything else a doctor prescribes, so this is no different. If my friend was struggling with heavy periods for example, I’d happily recommend the tranexamic acid I was prescribed and tell her to ask her doctor about it. This is no different, in my opinion.

The “help” out there for people like me prior to this was NHS weight management services, which just reiterate move more, eat less, in various formats. For someone who has been obese for years, I can assure you we know this. None of us are surprised to hear that crisps aren’t as good for us as an apple. And actually WLI really do address the reasons I overeat. It’s completely changed the kinds of foods I want to eat. I’m sure everyone who’s putting them down knows already, but the injections themselves don’t make you lose weight, you still have to eat in a calorie defecit and exercise. It just makes it all more possible as your digestion system slows down and your food noise disappears.

If you’re able to do it without WLI, incredible, they aren’t really for you. For people like me, they’re literally a life saver.

Whodrankmytea · 17/06/2025 16:21

Intermittent fasting will help. Record EVERYTHING you eat/drink on MyFitnessPal. Drink lots of water. Eat lots of protein (it fills you up) and vegetables. Not all fruit is good - citrus fruit and berries are best. Increase exercise - strength/resistance training as well as walking and running and hiit workouts. Personally I would never try weight loss injections. I have done Slimming World and Weight Watchers in the past but am a bit cynical about these sorts of things now and would avoid.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/06/2025 16:41

@Jazzyyyy I agree about that - which is why I always stress I have taken MJ for 6 weeks but now am not and losing just the same but sticking to similar principles - food noise was never my issue though and I’ve got good will power - just lacked consistency of ‘keeping it up’ whenever I lost weight - that doesn’t change though whether or not you are on MJ or not - to maintain it you have to be tight on it and weigh regularly too - I stopped that but won’t again as losing 4lbs isa lot easier than 4 stone

Jazzyyyy · 17/06/2025 17:15

@Crikeyalmighty Yeah consistency is so important. My morning weigh- ins help remind me I need to stay focused and be mindful about what and how much I eat for the day ahead.

It sounds obvious but I used to just buy random ingredients whereas now I plan my meals while doing my weekly online shop. And each day I decide what I’ll eat taking the calories into consideration.

I don’t cook that many new meals so I tend to know roughly how many calories everything is now.
