Im doing something about it - cutting calories and last night went out for a gentle run

Good luck op. Im similar height and started at 16 stone. Now just under 14 stone. Im taking it slow. Joined slimming world a year or so ago and aim for 0.5 a week. Some weeks I lose, some I don't. I don't have healthy relationship with sweet food so trying to retrain myself too. Its a journey I tried every other diet out there and don't mental energy to constantly count calories.

Exercise always been problematic as tend to go all out then give up so started with doing x number of steps a day instead and focus on maintaining that for a couple of months. Then try adding walks in. Again sw has movement goals which are helping me

I find the faster I lose the faster I put back on. I did fast 800. Dropped 4 stone. Couldn't maintain and put more on.

Edited

Fast 800 is great for quick weight loss ive found

I was your height , and 18 stone 6lb . As of a year ago I’ve lost 11 stone 6lb and gone from size 30 to a size 6. It still feels insane to now be so tiny , but I found the Michael Moseley book fast 800 to be incredibly useful for my weight loss as well as using the saxenda injections for the first half of my weight loss journey . Well done going for a run!! That’s amazing . I still don’t do any exercise now 😂 you can definitely do it op , good luck

5 posts in, and someone suggests weight loss injections. 🙄

Good luck on your weight loss journey @CelticMaiden but please don't automatically start sticking this stuff in your body! At least TRY to lose it naturally with a change in your diet and doing more exercise. Just going straight to weight loss injection is not going deal with the reasons why you got to 14 stone.

I lost 3 stone 3 years ago (and kept it off) on the 5:2 diet. Brilliant way to lose weight IMO. (And I got a fitbit and have done 17-18 miles a week walking since then...) I am so much healthier now, with much more stamina. It's knocked 7-8 years off me too! I've gone from looking 3-4 years older, to 3-4 years younger.

GinnyandGeorgia · 17/06/2025 10:04

well done with being honest with yourself!

Now the hard bit: it's a very SLOW process, never forget this.
Take progress photos and measurement.
But it will be SLOW.

Think long term, and think sustainable. You can drop a lot of weight in 3 to 6 months, but if you put it all back on and more, what's the point. SLOW and constant.

Exercise is great, but running not brilliant for weight loss: you burn a hell of a lot less than you think, you get more hungry. So it's less calories you need, but ignore the running bit.

Good luck.

GinnyandGeorgia · 17/06/2025 10:05

The worst problem with weight loss injections is what happens when you stop using them.

You have gone bigger than you wanted to be, so it happens. It can happen again, unfortunately, and easily.

What does the voting mean? At the moment it looks like the majority voted YABU. Does that mean people think you are being unreasonable to go on a diet? Or that you are unreasonable to post it on the internet?

The AIBU format is so confusing sometimes.

Personally I think you don't need to diet (if that's even the question being asked).

Why do you think she doesn't need to diet? She is almost double the weight she should be for her height! (Sorry op if that sounds harsh, good luck on your weightless journey!)

Who on earth reported my post?!

Who on earth reported my post?!

not me, but I am guessing one of the terminally offended took offence with one of the words you use.

Some people take things VERY personally on this forum 😂The OP seemed to have understood what you meant in the spirit you meant it though?

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 17/06/2025 10:16

Oh I feel you OP! I’ve put on a stone this year alone - now 11 and a half stone and also 5ft. Another couple of years and I’ll easily hit 14.

Really want to do something about it too.

xPenelopePitstop · 17/06/2025 10:16

best of luck with your journey 💪🏼

It’s awful isn’t it, when you see the number on the scale and think “right, time to do something about this”.

If I can offer any advice: lifting weights and resistance training is so much more beneficial to weightloss than cardio.

That's the same with any weight loss though. Mounjaro only works if you are in a calorie defecit. As soon as you stop being in a calorie defecit, you'll stop losing weight.

I lost 7 stone 'naturally' in 2020 by calorie counting and exercising....put 8 back on in the last 3 years!

CelticMaiden · 17/06/2025 09:47

Good for you ! I’ve been so desperate to lose weight in the past - whether it’s

calorie control and exercise
gastric band
mounjaro

if it’ll increase your feeling of wellbeing to di it then YOU MUST!

Good luck girl! You can do it. I recommend Slimming World.

StooOrangeyForCrows · 17/06/2025 10:24

OP, don't run yet. You'll knacker your knees. Wait for that and see it as a goal to lose weight for. Fast walking will do you as much good and 90% less impactful on your joints. Give them time to catch up.

Go you!

Gettingbysomehow · 17/06/2025 10:25

I was a proper heifer at 15 stone my heaviest ever at 5 foot 4. I've since lost 5 stone and I'm 63 so you can do it. I've been on mounjaro which has worked like a miracle for me.
I've been off work for the last 15 months having surgery for an orthopaedic problem. they won't recognise me when I go back next month, I was a size 20 when I left and I'm a 14 now 😁

SwingTheMonkey · 17/06/2025 10:29

Good luck op! I’m 5ft 2 and weighed a whopping 17 stone. Since September I’ve lost 6 stone and discovered a love for the gym! I’m using mounjaro but understand it’s not for everyone.

bigkahunaburger · 17/06/2025 10:30

For me - if I want rapid weightloss that will stay off, I fast. I simply can't calorie count, or healthy eat - the moment something is 'off limits' I want it even more! and a nibble leads to gorging. But what I can do is fast. I just have zero food, only coffee and water with electrolytes, and go as long as I can bare. When Im really starving, I write in my notes on my phone what meal I am gonna have the next day. Somehow that helps me not eat it there and then.

This won't work for everyone but it does for me. So if Im craving cakes I just am like 'you can have that tomorrow'. Then tomorrow comes and I dont fancy it. Ive got up to a 5 dayer before. But yeah I regularly do 48 hours fasts. Keeps me trim.

Im neurodiverse so it might be why this works for me.

yes and no

if you change your lifestyle, it's sustainable.
Don't think of it as "diet", as in being deprived for a temporary amount of time. It's all about making changes full stop.

That's weight if your calorie deficit is too high, it's never going to work.
And removing food is not going to work either.

You want pizza? Have a slice. You want cake? Have small slice. As part of your daily calories. As opposed to "I wont' eat pizza or lasagna for 3 months, then I can treat myself.

Food is not a treat. A michelin star restaurant might be a treat, but normal food is just food. It's just about making choices and being reasonable with portion size and variety of food.

bigkahunaburger · 17/06/2025 10:33

Oh and eating carnivore only. That drops the weight too and is yummy I think.

I completely overhauled my lifestyle for two years. Went from being to completely sedentary and basically existing on a diet of crisps, to eating fresh home cooked food every day and running 10k 3-4 times a week. I looked and felt fantastic and it's probably the happiest I've been in my adult life.

Despite that, when I became really unwell with covid and had to stop exercising, I fell off 'the wagon' as it were and went back to my old habits and couldn't break them this time. I was desperate to be back how I was, but just couldn't get there again. Food addiction is very real and isn't as simple as 'just eat less' for some people, or no one would be overweight.

Cadburymonster · 17/06/2025 10:41

I'm 5'3 and 12 stone and 4lbs. I was 8 stone before I had my first DS. Shamefully used pregnancy as an excuse to eat anything and everything. To be fair I felt constantly hungry during pregnancy then while breastfeeding for 12 months after having him.

I tried fasting 16 / 8. So 16 hours fast and 8 hour window to eat. Kept calories in that window below 1200 and lost a stone pretty fast. Started a new job (night shift) and it all went out the window. I've started it again this week. You can get a free fasting app which helps as well.

Good luck OP you can do it.

TimeForATerf · 17/06/2025 10:47

Rooting for you OP, I was 13.5 stone a year ago, I've been 9 stone 3 since November, lots and lots of walking, but not gonna lie, I also used Mounjaro, it was a game changer for me. I've kept the weight off since, back to my 30s weight and it feels great. No way am I ever going to get so sloppy around food and drink again.

I also fast 16:8, it works for me. In reality it is often nearer 18:6 but when I think back to my young, slim teens, that is how I ate then. I am still walking around 14000 steps a day too.

Good luck.

BettyBobble · 17/06/2025 10:49

Good for you for taking steps OP. I was in this situation about 5 years ago. 5'1" and 12 and a half stone. I was bloody miserable. I woke up one morning and thought no more. I began a calorie deficit. Lots of protein and veggies. No booze, no sweet stuff, no refined carbs and I started lifting weights and doing HIIT and walking. In about 7-8 months I'd lost 5 and half stone and looked and felt fantastic.ive been a bit lazy recently but it's not gone back on because I've completely changed my eating habits but I do need to get back into exercise.

It's not about diet it's about completely changing habits. Best of luck.

Scottishskifun · 17/06/2025 10:49

I'm taller then you at 5.6 but lost over 3.5 stone by doing intermittent fasting and just logging my food with the aim of 1200 calories a day (I'm 1500 to maintain).

18 months on and I have kept the weight off and have a good relationship with food now.
I would like to lose the last 0.5 stone but I'm also not sweating it if I don't and sit around 9 stone 11.

I don't think it matters how you lose it as long as it works for you and its maintainable. Weight loss injections work for many to lose it but unless you address the habits as well it becomes difficult to maintain after and it becomes a different type of yo yo diet.

Focus on protein and eating as much veg as you like.
