Fears - what everyday things are people scared of

I’ll start - sounds stupid but I am scared of the top stair. As soon as I have started down the stairs I’m fine but it’s just that first step.

OP posts:
mediummumma · 16/06/2025 22:24

Spiders, cockroaches, wasps, moths

Flying, particularly when taking off and landing

Small spaces or feeling like I cannot escape (cannot ride rollercoasters etc as freak out when the bars lock)

Driving in icy conditions or snow

BugBugTheTornado · 16/06/2025 22:26

Mannequins. Which was more problematic than it sounds, as my mum was a window dresser and the starey bastards were everywhere in my childhood 😩

GhostInTheWashingMachine · 16/06/2025 02:36

People.

Being looked at.

Dentists.

Driving.

What an excellent user name! 🤣

SillyMillie90 · 16/06/2025 22:38

Not an every day thing but quarries or similar big open abandoned spaces. Even if I see them on Google Maps it freaks me out. Gives me fight or flight.

Mechanical or man made items under water.

Caves.

BlondieMuver · 16/06/2025 22:47

Anything to with doctors or hospitals scare the life out of me but I'm fine with dentists and opticians.

Thelnebriati · 16/06/2025 22:47

Walking into the house when its dark outside, I feel like I'm being chased. No idea why, its never happened to me.

I'm shuddering just reading this! 😪

Sorry! 😔

BrickHare · 15/06/2025 23:34

It’s because of the scene in Final destination? Don’t look it up if not but that scared me as a child 🤣

There's a scene in the original Omen involving a pane of glass being carried.
Gave me nightmares for years. Bad Idea to watch it as a child 😶‍🌫️

UnctuousUnicorns · 16/06/2025 22:56

Scenes of urban dystopia - abandoned shopping centres, theme parks etc. - are a very real fear for many, it seems.

Jollyjollyjollygoodie · 16/06/2025 23:39

Looking out through the curtains when it’s dark outside.

When I was 13 we lived in a bungalow and my dad was away working. Something woke me up in the night, I thought I could hear voices outside. I woke my mum up and my older sister. They both told me I was dreaming and to go back to bed. Convinced I had heard something, I opened a curtain in the living room and a man was standing right outside the window. I was terrified.

i will never open a curtain and look outside when it’s dark.

GrimTimes1 · 16/06/2025 23:52

Relatively recently I seen a picture online of a heaped bowl of rice, but every grain was neatly aligned in a too perfect way (it was probably an AI image).
Anyway, something about the picture made my blood run cold and I could almost hear myself screaming in my head. I have no idea why, but ever since then uncooked rice has given me the creeps.

Linnet · 17/06/2025 00:06

Thunder, I don’t mind the lightning but the thunder really scares me. Thankfully we don’t get a lot of thunderstorms where I live.

TheCoralMoose · 17/06/2025 00:19

Zips. I only like coats with buttons or press studs.

Escalators.

I’m Jewish and I’m genuinely scared how many people hate Jews. I’ve been in a state of constant anxiety since Oct 7. Sometimes I’ll be reading comments on social media about seemingly innocuous things and then, bam!, someone blames the Jews for something bad.

I’m also scared of spiders but they seem like a walk in the park for me at the moment in comparison!

So sorry you feel that way. Please try to ignore the negativity/anti semetics 🇬🇧 🇮🇱

TaupeMember · 17/06/2025 00:50

Toilets

Bits

DiscoBob · 17/06/2025 00:51

I'm scared of the tube. Especially in rush hour. In fact any mode of public transport when it's very busy.

I used to be scared of fire extinguishers when I was a child. And toilet brushes. I'm not crazy about either of them to this day!

I'm scared of having my body or face waxed by a stranger. In fact most beauty treatment bar hair colour, cut and style I don't enjoy the process of at all.

I'm scared of financial products like pensions, mortgages, loans etc and I don't understand taxes and things like that at all. It's just completely alien and intimidating to me.

shreddednips · 17/06/2025 01:44

Birds, but only birds of a certain size and type. Robin or bluetit size is fine and find them very cute. Blackbird size or larger fills me with absolute revulsion and horror, especially if the eyes are ‘beady’. I think it goes back to seeing a dead bird of this size as a child- it had been eviscerated by something, and I can remember being absolutely horrified by its innards. Poor thing.

I also think that they have an oily, sort of ‘crunchy’ look about them which I dislike. I have a recurring nightmare that a goose or albatross breaks into my house and smothers me with its horrid, greasy body (I have no idea if they are actually greasy). I’m aware this is totally irrational.

I’m also horrified by anything with a torpedo-like, tapered shape that moves in a ‘gliding’ manner through any medium. Sharks, submarines and large ships for example. But particularly jumbo jets, there’s this horrendous video of a jet coming in to land and it swoops low over a beach, and it makes me feel ill. I went to an air show once (god knows why given my particular fear) and there was a Boeing manoeuvring around low in the sky, I went all faint with fear and had to leave. Airports are a problem, I don’t like being inside planes or in close proximity to them from the outside either. I’ll avoid driving routes that take me near airports because the planes fly too low for comfort. It’s completely irrational, but they cause me to feel absolute terror. Small, Spitfire-size planes and helicopters are fine!

Huge white, man made structures, like wind turbines and lighthouses . Caused by being taken up a lighthouse one day when I was very small. I can still remember being carried up this tall white building.
Heights, Wish I wasn't . I would love to go up in a hot air balloon, but I am too scared.
Bats. They scare seven shades out of me. I would be really frightened if one ever got into the house. I think it's the fact that they carry Lyssa Virus which makes it worse.

Yes, I am not keen on bats. They seem to have no sense of direction. One summer many years ago, my cousin came to stay and one got into the back bedroom where he was sleeping. He had to chase it out with a broom!

@slowlydecaying I’m terrified of feathers too. My Mum used to have to go out to the garden and check for them before I would go out to play. The sight of them gives me the creeps. I’m pretty scared of seagulls too…all those massive feathers!

The mirror/reflections in windows in the dark thing creeps me out as well…I hate going into our en-suite at night because of the full length mirror in there.

When I was 17, my friend dragged me off to see Salome at The Globe in London. There were lots of topless women and feathers! The feathers were everywhere! Am pretty sure there were also lots on the floor and seats when we arrived, presumably from the previous performance.

tiredoflondonbutnotlife · 16/06/2025 19:01

Brucha tiheyi @DeSoleil . Thank you.
The other thing that terrifies me is most people's silence about it.
(We all know how that ended up in the '30s, don't we?) 🙄

This is so sad. I can't even begin to imagine what you must be going through. My maiden name is Jewish, but not obviously so. So much hate in this world.

DD has a tiny hamster, he is lovely, I absolutely cannot pick him up, no way, gives me the absolute heebie jeebies!

Our DS had a hamster. Dh would talk to him, feed him etc but couldn't even dream of holding it! It's the thought if 'the little paws '!

WhistleBlower8 · 17/06/2025 02:32

Heights, spiders, any insects really with the exception of lady birds and moths.

Dark doorways.

k1233 · 17/06/2025 02:41

Terrified of frogs/toads and grasshoppers. They make me scream.

Also cannot stand caricatures of people such as puppets eg the punch and judy type, was it thunderbirds from the 60s? In the same vein, clowns, drag queens, upside down mouths/ chin faces. They don't make me scream but really dislike them.

Mama2many73 · 17/06/2025 02:57

Not so much a fear but an irrational dislike is the digital time 23:23. Or slightly less. 11.23.

Any other 23: time is fine or 11: it happens regular !

Loose wet hair in the bathroom. Can cope if it's dry, can cope with wet in the kitchen etc but in the bathroom makes me wretch!

Black hairy spiders, think its the way /speed they move!! The ones like daddy long legs no issue at all, will pick up and move them.

notmyrealnameok · 17/06/2025 03:03
