Fears - what everyday things are people scared of

I’ll start - sounds stupid but I am scared of the top stair. As soon as I have started down the stairs I’m fine but it’s just that first step.

@murasaki oh dear 🤣

Going on car journeys. Where I live has a shockingly bad standard of driving and a very high accident rate. Virtually every week there is a serious accident.
I'm a competent driver but I can't cope with the amount of reckless idiots I might encounter

I get this. I did placements at A&E when I was a student and the things I seen from car crashes scared the shit out of me. Was also a case study we viewed at uni and OMG it was horrific. Kind of made me feel uneasy about driving for a while. Never did get over the pictures.

TheHateIsNotGood · 15/06/2025 23:32

Sharks. Stops me swimming in any sea,,,even off benign UK beaches,,,,completely daft.

ninjahamster · 15/06/2025 23:34

Leaving the house. I find it absolutely terrifying.

BrickHare · 15/06/2025 23:34

booknerdhead · 15/06/2025 23:23

Broken glass. I try to get someone else to clear it up.
I can’t watch two people carry a large pane of glass 😨

It’s because of the scene in Final destination? Don’t look it up if not but that scared me as a child 🤣

LouH1981 · 15/06/2025 23:35

Sharks. I can’t even cope with photos of them. Even just typing that word freaks me out 🙈

blackbirdevensong · 15/06/2025 23:37

Rain.

But we have a hole in our roof, so I guess that's rational. Yes, I could get it fixed, but that's £££.

UnctuousUnicorns · 15/06/2025 23:38

Windows without curtains or blinds, that you can see your sort of reflection in after dark. Similarly, mirrors in a dark room. Seeing a murky reflection in the gloom has always put the willies up me. Like I'm not seeing me, but some dark alter ego of me, or even worse, the fear that I might see something else altogether. All curtains and blinds in our house are shut as as soon as it's dusk for this reason.

aspidernamedfluffy · 15/06/2025 23:39

Pigs. I have no idea why but just seeing a picture of the makes me squirm.

grizzlyoldbear · 15/06/2025 23:40

multi storey carparks

RaraRachael · 15/06/2025 23:40

I can't go in somewhere cramped if I can't turn round and go back out the same way

When the kids were little we took them to some caves where you had to keep going and it got so narrow you could just get through. I was on the verge of a panic attack.

Ugh, same. I’ll paddle, cautiously, with my children and that’s it. Can’t cope with boat rides either.
We have an unspoken agreement that I’ll stay on land, they’ll stay in the sea and everyone is happy 👍🏻

Ladamesansmerci · 15/06/2025 23:41

Thr dark and wasps. If I didn't live with my partner, I'd still sleep with a nightlight on. And I don't think I need to explain wasps lol.

tiredoflondonbutnotlife · 15/06/2025 23:43

I’m Jewish and I’m genuinely scared how many people hate Jews. I’ve been in a state of constant anxiety since Oct 7. Sometimes I’ll be reading comments on social media about seemingly innocuous things and then, bam!, someone blames the Jews for something bad.

I’m also scared of spiders but they seem like a walk in the park for me at the moment in comparison!

UnctuousUnicorns · 15/06/2025 23:43

I hate buttons too. Horrible, nasty, slimy little bastards. My clothes are all either pull on or zip fastening, the sole exception being a cardigan I knitted for myself that has a single top unpolished wooden button, which is just about acceptable because it's not slimy. Otherwise no.

OMG I have this exact same thing! Terrified of my reflection in the dark even though I’ve never allowed myself to see it! I’ve never actually told anyone in case they think I’m a loony 😆

LiveLoveLaughQueef · 15/06/2025 23:45

Rats. Absolutely hate the CF’s who think they can break into houses and live for free causing chaos and with their horrible skinny tails.

Also seagulls who are very noisy and wake you up early in the morning but are actually protected.

I can tolerate seagulls but mostly find them annoying and resent the culprit that stole half a bacon sandwich from me in 2017. Rats terrify me and I can’t even look at a picture.

Flofortoday · 15/06/2025 23:47

Big bushy beards on men. Short neat ones are fine. I used to work with a man who had a huge bushy beard he seemed proud of and it smelled awful. He probably didn't wash it. I had to sit with him sometimes while we did some paperwork. I'll never forget that smell.

Murders, rapists, pregnant women’s backs. It just seems like they will topple over and break their back, I know this isn’t rational but it scares me 🤣

I’m 36 weeks pregnant and this has just made me howl 😂 my poor little back can’t take anymore!

Byebyechicken · 15/06/2025 23:50

Anything that flaps, moths, butterflies, birds. I'm currently sweltering with every window firmly closed in case the flappy little fuckers get in!
Fear of heights, or rather a fear of falling from a height.
Fear of severe pain. I fear this more than death.
The dark.
Evil entities.
Massive spiders.
Not being safe, which covers a lot.
Living alone in my house.
I think that covers it.

LuckyManifestations · 15/06/2025 23:51

I'm scared of anything that looks like it's dying. So won't have cut flowers in the house, or plants just incase they start dying without me noticing Blush
No problem with bugs of any kind unless they look like they are dying Shock
Vegetables have to be binned as soon as they aren't fully fresh.
Couldn't have a pet just incase.
It's been the bane of my adult lifeConfused

Also men who cross dress. I am ok-ish with them on TV, but not in real life.

BigAnne · 15/06/2025 23:52

Walking near the sea late at night.

VoltaireMittyDream · 15/06/2025 23:53

Leftovers. Particularly in other people’s fridges.
(Legacy of growing up with a food hoarder who gave us all endless bouts of food poisoning)

blueshoes · 15/06/2025 23:54

Mirrors in a dark room. I cannot look into them. I am convinced I will see something reflected in there that is not in the physical world. I will not be able to sleep in a bed that faces a mirror.

Deep dark water. The ocean. The scene from Titanic where Jack lets go and sinks down and down into the dark cold water taking hours before his body touches the ocean floor.

Floor that is wet with mushy paper and streaked with the dirt of people's shoes walking on it. For example, the side of a swimming pool or shower changing room or an airplane toilet. When I grew up, there were still wet markets. This is where I got it from.

Come to think of it, moss and algae or that white thing growing on the tiles of a swimming pool.

Hair around a plughole surrounded by scum.

Squashed snails. Under my foot.

juggleit · 15/06/2025 23:54

The UK government!
