Fears - what everyday things are people scared of

I’ll start - sounds stupid but I am scared of the top stair. As soon as I have started down the stairs I’m fine but it’s just that first step.

Water: seas, rivers, canals, waterfalls, swimming pools, all terrifying.

Balloons. Evil bastard things that make me feel sick to think of

Velvet, touching it genuinely makes my skin crawl

JHound · 16/06/2025 01:37

Rodents. Although it’s more of a phobia than a fear.

Rats and mice (it’s their tails) I can’t even look at photos of them.

Same!

We had a mouse get into our house share. My housemates agreed to deal with issue if I bought the traps. Which I agreed but then could not purchase it because of the image on the box! Could not look at it or touch it.

I’m with you on that. Especially the first step. It’s scary

DD has a tiny hamster, he is lovely, I absolutely cannot pick him up, no way, gives me the absolute heebie jeebies!

They bite and they bite hard. I was very happy when my children lost interest in that pet ownership

Stray hairs

I get this, I also hate to see stray human hair on others sweaters and shirts.

Jollyjollyjollygoodie · 16/06/2025 01:50

Moths. A friend of mine is scared of custard.

Cows!
They’re just so much bigger than I expect.
It’s not even that I worry they’ll stampede, it’s more that they could just decide to lie down and crush me.

Also hugely fearful of cows... and geese... and swans.

Actually terrified of swans.

Birds. Dh is a birdwatcher so that's fun. I'm fine with them in pictures or outside a good distance away but not near me. And when one gets into the house it's breakdown territory.

GhostInTheWashingMachine · 16/06/2025 02:36

People.

Being looked at.

Dentists.

Driving.

Hihihello193 · 16/06/2025 02:59

Money on the floor. Specifically copper coins on a carpet. Bleugh. I'm not sure why.
It's not exactly 'fear' but makes my blood run freezing cold, sets off a horrible reaction, and I have to immediately deal with it.
I'm fine with soks / pants, toys, on the floor, these are all fine, no problem, I just tidy them away.
But coins - urgh. No. Its like an emergency.
I grew up extremely poor and we had various piggy banks etc. Small change would sometimes end up on the carpet and be left there. Or we'd count it out on the floor. Not sure why it makes me shudder though!!
Ppl are weird. Myself included. Lol

My lovely cat once brought me a gift of a half dead bird. I got it into the living room away from him where it proceeded to fly madly around pooping everywhere.
I had to call the SSPCA to remove it.i can't hold a bird or live fish in my hands. Not keen on birds full stop.

Lifts, mirrors, spiders, Daddy long legs, driving

Handmethegunandaskmeagain · 16/06/2025 07:11

The bits in the bottom of the washing up bowl.

Sidebeforeself · 16/06/2025 07:37

Walking downstairs if theres no handrail.
Downwards escalators
Driving
Heights
Frogs and snakes

But my really silly ones are..
Sometimes things that are really holey make my stomach turn
Indoor plants…it’s the soil and the fact that it’s a living thing. particularly freak out if someone has a plant in their bathroom
When the camera goes underwater on TV
Indoor aquariums..esp if they are dark.. I just know somethings going to reach out and grab me.

Omg. This is exactly why I could never have a cat!!

CandidRaven · 16/06/2025 07:55

Lorries, they are just way too big 😂

For me it's driving up steep hills. Especially, but not limited to, hill starts. I have an irrational fear that that the car's engine will not be enough power to keep going, or we will somehow fall off the hill backwards.

I get this fear on cable cars. Also funicular railways.

If you were driving a Commer Camper van from the 1970s up a 25% hill, then it was a distinct possibility.

The speedo was below zero and I'm sure we were overtaken by a tectonic plate boundary at one point.

Missey85 · 16/06/2025 08:37

I'm scared of heights I'm 40 and have never been on a rollercoaster 🎢

NegroniMacaroni · 16/06/2025 08:49

I didn't used to be afraid of stairs but since falling down badly I have a new found fear / respect for them. Apparently they're the 2nd biggest killer in the accidents category after cars.

Also - this is less common - tsunamis (even in coastal Portugal).

JasmineTea11 · 16/06/2025 08:51

Motorways. I can drive on them but I hate it.

Sultanofzanzibar · 16/06/2025 09:03

Ships in dry dock
Empty swimming pools

threeeggsontoast · 16/06/2025 09:15

Cooling towers! Don’t ask me why but they scare me.

CoffeeCantata · 16/06/2025 09:25

Big spiral roundabouts. I learned to drive decades ago and I try to maintain my skills (😁) and not give in to my 'old lady' fears, but I really dread these. I've watched lots of videos on YouTube about how to tackle them...but the reality doesn't tally with the theory! I find that all the lane-changes you need to do are often difficult because other drivers don't respect indicators any more. Fgs - if you need to move across, and indicate in plenty of time, people should let you - as they do on the videos...but good luck with that. I've actually given up checking my rear-view mirror now, because frankly it makes no odds. I'm indicating, I'm moving over, and you better believe it.

I've also noticed a bit more vertigo over the past few years and whereas I used to run down Tube escalators on the left-hand side, I now grip the rail, stand on the right and try not to think about how high up I am!

RunningJo · 16/06/2025 09:27

Spiders - common one
The dark - possibly also common but mainly with children I expect 😂
