Fears - what everyday things are people scared of

I’ll start - sounds stupid but I am scared of the top stair. As soon as I have started down the stairs I’m fine but it’s just that first step.

I have an irrational fear of getting hit by lightening if I have the window open during a storm…

Spiders

Drunks

Huge white, man made structures, like wind turbines and lighthouses . Caused by being taken up a lighthouse one day when I was very small. I can still remember being carried up this tall white building.
Heights, Wish I wasn't . I would love to go up in a hot air balloon, but I am too scared.
Bats. They scare seven shades out of me. I would be really frightened if one ever got into the house. I think it's the fact that they carry Lyssa Virus which makes it worse.

I'm a bit scared of cows, hate walking past them

You should be scared of them. Just stay on the other side of the fence.

MamaBobo · 16/06/2025 16:04

@slowlydecaying I’m terrified of feathers too. My Mum used to have to go out to the garden and check for them before I would go out to play. The sight of them gives me the creeps. I’m pretty scared of seagulls too…all those massive feathers!

The mirror/reflections in windows in the dark thing creeps me out as well…I hate going into our en-suite at night because of the full length mirror in there.

Pricelessadvice · 16/06/2025 16:07

Those big thick fake eyelashes that people wear now. You know the ones that are clearly meant to look fake because nobody has ever had eye lashes that long, full and dark before?
They look dirty/grubby and I have a real visceral reaction on seeing them. Yuk.

I hate boats. Even on holiday if we go on a little boat trip, i won't go below deck in case it sinks and I can't escape.

I can't bear the thought of being on a cruise with nothing but sea in view or having to sleep while the ship sails through the night.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 16/06/2025 16:11

Not me, I’m just plain old scared of heights, but Dd is scared of pictures and film of whales or big fish floating in the sea, especially floating above. But was fine going scuba diving!

PauliesWalnuts · 16/06/2025 16:16

Rats and mice.
The bottom of boats in the sea.
Anything scaly and reptilian. Komodo dragons are my worst nightmare. Ditto those racing snakes from that David Attenborough national history programme.

Oh yeah this is a good one. I’m terrified of the thought of a cruise. They are huge and the thought of people saying “yeah but they’re like a floating shopping centre, they’re huge” gives me the heebie jeezies

CanIinterestyouinasarcasticcomment · 16/06/2025 16:19

Butterflies, they're just moths (which I also hate) in a dress!

Multiple holes, but I think that's a fairly common one.

Stepping onto escalators.

smashedhen · 16/06/2025 16:52

Chinook helicopters terrify me, the sound they make is horrific. Sadly they appear around here all the time

I see a lot of them too and am always mystified how the 2 sets of blades don't collide with each other but admittedly I am an aviation dunce.
Still don't like them flying over me.

I’m Jewish and I’m genuinely scared how many people hate Jews. I’ve been in a state of constant anxiety since Oct 7. Sometimes I’ll be reading comments on social media about seemingly innocuous things and then, bam!, someone blames the Jews for something bad.

I’m also scared of spiders but they seem like a walk in the park for me at the moment in comparison!

Chazak u'varuch. 💐🕊️

tiredoflondonbutnotlife · 16/06/2025 19:01

Brucha tiheyi @DeSoleil . Thank you.
The other thing that terrifies me is most people's silence about it.
(We all know how that ended up in the '30s, don't we?) 🙄

Frogs and toads give me the creeps . We used to have a neighbour with a pond and I would find bloody frogs in the garden. I couldn't go anywhere near them

blueshoes · 16/06/2025 19:37

Dead fish, the way they float up to the surface and look all pale.

I used to have an aquarium growing up and had to remove the fish and clean the tank. Brrrrrrrr

It’s because of the scene in Final destination? Don’t look it up if not but that scared me as a child 🤣

Never seen Final Destination and will steer clear thanks!
Fear of broken glass is called Spasmenagaliaphobia (!).
My mother felt the same and it ties in with squeamishness and knives. I can’t watch operations or anything gruesome. I get shooting pains up my legs😁

Having said that, I’ve had a few ops, but don’t want to know any details and blank them out of my mind.

HLL80 · 16/06/2025 20:28

Stairs. Unless I can hold on, I struggle to walk up or down them. I made me and DH a coffee in bed the other morning and had to bring them up separately as I couldn’t go up without holding the banister.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 16/06/2025 20:54

Ooh, getting on and off escalators. Especially the really big ones into the London Underground. Probably related to the height / vertigo thing. Adding in movement and surging crowds of people gives me a really panicky feeling. Going down is far worse than going up of course. And also I have long hair and wear alot of scarves, and the horror of being strangled or choked after falling is very real.

Ah, I place my open palm a suitable distance away, then tap the back of a toad with the finger of my other hand, so it leaps onto my palm. Teeny tiny toads are especially adorable. 🥰

I'm shuddering just reading this! 😪

Pinkroom · 16/06/2025 22:18

Looking out of a window when it's dark outside, gives me the absolute creeps, I always think I'm going to see someone standing there and they're waiting for me to notice them!
When potatos start to sprout and look like little aliens. Actually any roots in general. I hate gardening for this reason.
