What is wrong with Granny?

Both my grannies were Granny.
My mother was Granny.
My sister has chosen Nana, why?
Is this an indication of how far we are plummeting towards the bottom?

My DD has two grannies.

Cynic17 · 14/06/2025 20:06

Nothing is wrong with Granny!
Nana was the dog in "Peter Pan" 😂

PlumpAndCircumstance · 14/06/2025 20:07

It’s just personal taste. One day I hope to be a granny.

WhereHasMyPlanetGone · 14/06/2025 20:07

Nothing wrong with Granny. Nothing wrong with Nana either.

waxymoron · 14/06/2025 20:07

I'm granny..other grandmother is grandma

PiggieWig · 14/06/2025 20:07

Why is nana ‘plummeting towards the bottom’?

angelopal · 14/06/2025 20:09

My DC have a grandma, granny and a nana.

LordJohnGrey · 14/06/2025 20:09

My DM and DGM were Nanny, I'm Grandma, but that's because I was a professional Nanny and most of my charges called me Nanna firstname, so I wanted Grandma from my DGD.

AutumnArrow · 14/06/2025 20:09

Granny conjures images of a very elderly granny personally. Our DC call their great grandmother granny and their grandmother's nana and nanny. Grandads are gramps and grampa.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 14/06/2025 20:10

My kids have a Granny.

SocksShmocks · 14/06/2025 20:10

Doesn’t the first grandchild choose the name? My children have a Grandma and a Nanny.

Birdshitbridgegotme · 14/06/2025 20:10

we have nanny and granny here. Helps distinguish who is being mentioned when in conversation.

BatchCookBabe · 14/06/2025 20:10

It's up to her. Why do you care? I will be nana when (if) I have grandchildren. No way is anyone calling me granny! 😖

Bettysnow · 14/06/2025 20:10

My kids ended up giving my parents really unusual names as they couldn't pronounce granny/ grandad properly as toddlers.
The names stuck and they still called them these names as adults. My adult son got some strange looks when he called my mum gangan!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 14/06/2025 20:11

I had 2 grannies
DH had 2 grandmas
My DC have one of each.

What's wrong with Nana?

RebeccaRedhat · 14/06/2025 20:13

I had a lovely nana and a wicked grandma.
My mam is nana and MIL granny (granny because we have 2 nephews born before dd and they went with granny. Now they're older they call her grandma!). Grandchild no 5 and 7 go with Nanny for said granny.

Ketzele · 14/06/2025 20:13

I have a Nanny, partly because my great gran had already taken Granny. IME nannies are either posh people's hired help, or working class grandparents with their own parents still around. This is rather supported by your 'race to the bottom' comment.

saraclara · 14/06/2025 20:14

I'm confused.

I got to choose my grandmother name. I went for Grandma. My scary grandmother was Gran. My abusive mother was Granny. My wonderful mother in law was Grandma.

The only name my DD wasn't keen on for me was Nanny. Which I'm not keen on either, so all good.

Bessica1970 · 14/06/2025 20:14

How is not wanting to be ‘granny’ plummeting to the bottom?

To me ‘grannies’ were old, retired, frail grandparents in children’s stories (I don’t ever remember meeting anyone known as granny in real life, maybe it’s a regional thing).

Grandmothers these days are more likely to be working, younger looking (procedures and hair dye) and in better health (HRT), so less likely to see themselves in that way.

I’m not sure it matters what they want to be called!

BejewelledCat · 14/06/2025 20:14

My granddaughter calls me by my initials. I don't want to be granny, grandma, nannie, nana or any of those other names. Makes me think of a old lady, which isn't me.

Shetlands · 14/06/2025 20:15

I'm Granny - it was good enough for the late Queen and I'm happy with it. My mother is Grandma. I really dislike Nan, Nana and Nanny.

recklessgran · 14/06/2025 20:16

No nothing wrong at all - I think it's just personal taste.
I'm Granny to the girls and Gran to the boys.
I really dislike Grandma so wasn't prepared to be known as that.
I think I'll be Nana or Old Granny when I'm a Great Grandmother.

Mew2 · 14/06/2025 20:16

So mum is Granny. And MIL Poppins.....

Caerulea · 14/06/2025 20:17

DGS has a nanny (me) & a nana (not me) & a gran'nan. I had a nan. My kids have a nan & a Granny Gogs.

Nothing is a race to anywhere imo

Ketzele · 14/06/2025 20:18

Of course, there may be something about not wanting the age connotations of Granny. My nan was still in her thirties when I was born (and I'm not the oldest grandchild). She and my mum were twice pregnant at the same time. Maybe that bothered her? I've never asked. But yeah, I think the main thing is that Nan has working class connotations (the horror)..
