It’s a long time coming

MonTuesWeds · 14/06/2025 19:27

Carried out by who exactly? The same people who have been desperately trying to suppress it?

OrdinaryMagicOfAcorns · 14/06/2025 19:28

But what will they actually do?

Our prisons are full, they’re releasing violent offenders now. One of the reasons why they won’t tackle male harassment of women - apart from being mostly men themselves - is the sheer numbers involved.

TildaSwan · 14/06/2025 19:39

Another u turn. Unbelievable. We were told repeatedly that it wasn't necessary, that the focus was on implementing the recommendations from the first inquiry. So, what's changed? Why now? And how on earth can the public have any faith whatsoever in what Labour say, when five minutes later they change course. It would be funny, except real victims lives are at stake here who are being tossed around and consistently denigrated. Absolutely Shameful.

YouWillFindMeInTheGarden · 14/06/2025 19:42

I think there’s probably more grooming gangs waiting to be investigated….it will all come out soon

They commissioned a report by an experienced cross bench peer into whether one was needed. Her initial response was that it wasn’t, now she has finished her report she says from what she’s seen there are good reasons to have one.

It’s not really a u turn, it’s responsible government.

Summerhillsquare · 14/06/2025 19:48

There has already been one: www.iicsa.org.uk/
Resources should be focussed on implementing it. Those lobbying for it were in power last time and are being extremely cynical.

We seem to have a very different idea of what a 'u turn 'is then. If they weren't initially sure, then surely the 'responsible' thing to do would be to say that it would be determined at a later date after the conclusion of the report.

TheNuthatch · 14/06/2025 20:39

This is excellent news. I just hope it's thorough enough. Looking forward to getting more details on Monday.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 14/06/2025 21:07

I think it needs to happen. For me one of the biggest issues is authourities treatment of these children as problematic rather than as victims. I personally would like to see pretty harsh punishments for adults 18+ who have sex with children ( under 16s) which would leave a bit of wiggle room for Romeo and Juliet type rules.

I don’t think any social worker / police officer / teacher should be looking at a scenario where girls are given drugs and have sex with lots of men and going well it’s all about choices.

cumbriaisbest · 14/06/2025 21:10

Pointless. Pandering to the racists.

Nazir Afsal said it will retraumatise survivors.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 14/06/2025 21:12

Waste of time and money.
Grenfell
Hillsborough
Blood scandal
Post office scandal

every single enquiry is pointless- no one is every held to account, they cost millions. We all know how grooming gangs came about, we all know the cultural coverup and motivations that allowed it to happen.

Did Baroness Casey actually say one wasn’t needed?

kinkytoes · 14/06/2025 21:15

It's necessary.

Are we having two now? One by the govt and one by Rupert Lowe et al?

Yes. The benefit of the enquiry will depend on who does it, and its remit.

I wonder if Rupert Lowe might be the next PM and Conservative leader....

Is it racist when men coming from countries/backgrounds that treat women as second class citizens are the main perps?

QuiteUnbelievable · 14/06/2025 21:29

@cumbriaisbest

I can imagine it will be hard for some victims

Cumbria there are literally thousands though so I don't understand how one person can begin to think he can possibly speak for all these victim's.

Others have been calling for an enquiry and many victims have their persecutors wandering free around their towns still which is apparently deeply upsetting to some of them

Whammyyammy · 14/06/2025 21:30

Totally pointless. It will be a cover up.

Maybe the female victims of the child rapists and sexual abusers can decide if they think an inquiry is warranted? How can it be pandering to racists to seek justice for children who were multiply raped and abused? Jeez, where is your humanity? Is it like, if your ethnicity or your skin colour is a certain shade, you can be excused answering for your sexual crimes against girls and women? How does Nazir Afsal know if it will retraumatise survivors? Has every single survivor been spoken to ascertain their views? Why not let the girls and women decide?

I agree. I am glad Labour are capable of changing their minds rather than sticking to one course of action dogmatically.
