New neighbour sunbathing in the nude

ZooHannah · 13/06/2025 22:26

We moved in to our dream home last month, we have a corner plot with only one direct neighbour who is a (I believe) single man and has always been polite and friendly in our initial conversations.

DH looked out of our bedroom window today to see our neighbour sunbathing completely starkers. He came downstairs to tell me and I couldn’t believe it when I went upstairs and saw for myself.

I want to go round to say something however DH has told me I am being ridiculous and he is on his own property so can go what he wants.

AIBU? I appreciate neighbourly relations but I am absolutely repulsed by this.

But women would, so no difference is there?

So are you saying that in general women are a bit 'moanier' & hence more likely to complain ?! ;)

I blame OP’s husband for this furore. If only he hadn’t told OP; she may never have been ‘incensed’. This whole fiasco has reminded me of a very old song from 1974 by Ray Stevens.

I have visions of OP’s husband haring up the stairs after her shouting ‘Don’t look Ethel….’

For anyone who doesn’t fancy this link to Facebook and a video from Top of the Pops 1974 then just Google Ray Stevens The Streak just to be on the safe side you understand.😉

Absolutely this.

But there is no mention of the children even being there. How do you know it didn’t happen during school hours when there weren’t any kids at home?

Plus we don’t know how old the OP’s children are, they could be too young to look out of the specific upstairs window with the view, alternatively they could be teenagers who would just think it’s hilarious.

Honestly I’m gobsmacked by the horror some posters are expressing about a guy quietly sunbathing in his own garden, and the assumptions people are jumping to. Next thing we know OP is going to have organised a lynch mob to chase the poor guy from the neighbourhood and everyone here will be cheering her on.

TooBored1 · 15/06/2025 09:19

ZooHannah · 14/06/2025 15:19

Another friend put it nicely - if my kids looked out of the window when at school and saw a naked man, he’d be locked up!

You really don't see the difference between these two situations?

That reminds me of a recent 'four in a bed' repeat.

One of the B&Bers complained that her husband would have to stand in the window in his pjs to pour a cup of tea in the morning because the tray was behind the curtains.

Ooo they had a naturist B&B on there once too

Den of perverts obviously

DoctorRoseReturns · 15/06/2025 09:27

A report in 2022 said nearly 7m people in the UK described themselves as nudist/naturist

That's about 14% of the population

It's not that uncommon

PITCHpink · 14/06/2025 22:21

It would be if it was my neighbour, I’d be in the phone to the police. If someone has been told to stop and they continue then it will be purposely causing upset and then the law will be broken

I am going to go out on a limb and say that if you kept calling the police about Naked Nigel Next Door after they'd already told you he wasn't committing and offence then YOU would be the one in trouble for harassment

PITCH: Officer, he's still naked
Officer: Is he doing anything offensive this time?
PITCH: yes, he's lying there naked
Officer: so the same as the last 5 times? Ma'am you need to stop calling us
PITCH: But he's NAKED. Won't someone think of the children?
Officer: ma'am, as I've told you before. It's not illegal. If you keep calling us that is harassment. Leave him alone

I have never been asked.
Who carried out the report? Nudist Monthly?!

BIossomtoes · 14/06/2025 22:20

No it doesn’t. Kids aren’t stupid. They know the next door neighbour can do things they can’t because he’s an adult. Presumably he drives a car, that doesn’t make mockery of the fact they can’t.

We tell children not to play with fire or jump off high things or swing around on ropes then take them to the Circus and let them watch this

We tell them not to punch and fight then show them wrestling and boxing..

There are lots of things we tell kids not to do for their safety but adults do

It's reductive argument.

Well it was reported on Ipsos

I would imagine they, or a similar survey company, conducted it...

And I’m going to say that I think you’re taking the law too literally assuming he’s doing nothing wrong. It clearly states whilst ok in general terms you need to be mindful of your neighbours or you could be arrested. It would be at the courts discretion.

So in your scenario it’s becoming a problem as it’s obviously happening frequently. He’ll have been told it’s causing said neighbour distress and asked (told) to stop,
because it’s causing distress. If he chooses to ignore that advice and continues regardless, I think you’ll find your assumption is wrong and he could in fact be charged.

Nope. Since you don’t wish to visit the College of Policing’s website, here is the relevant section.

I think op would be told to stop spying on her neighbour on his private garden.

SwingTheMonkey · 15/06/2025 10:56

This reminds me of the folk who get outraged at seeing a breast out in public when a woman is breastfeeding. They are told, correctly, to just not look. Just because you can look at something, doesn’t mean you should. Op can avoid being disgusted by her neighbour’s actions simply by just not looking into his private garden.

Caligirl80 · 15/06/2025 10:58

Mind your own business! He's in his garden and can sunbathe like that if he wishes!! Why on earth did you go up to spy on him in his own garden???

If you don't like it then don't look! Or grow some privacy trees.

This is absolutely your problem and NOT his. I just hope he's wearing sunscreen.

Feeding your baby though is completely different to having your cock swinging around for anyone to look out the window and see. Breasts are not genitals for a start. No one needs a sun tanned cock and no one wants to see some random bloke wandering around naked.

The law seems to say OP that if it's causing you alarm and distress then it's a problem. You can't just do whatever you like in your own garden - you can't have sex in your garden for example if people can see.

The law doesn’t seem to say any such thing. As per the screenshot I posted above, this man is lawfully going about his business, within the confines of his own property. Any distress this causes OP is due to her deliberately observing him.

Oh this is tiresome. He wasn’t swinging his cock around. He was on his own garden, minding his own business. Op doesn’t have to look at him, she chose to. And as has been said, ad nauseam, on this thread, op doesn’t just get to say she’s distressed and her neighbour must stop. There must be proven intent to cause distress - which this guy isn’t, he’s just using his private space to be naked. OP’s right to spy on her neighbour in his garden without being offended by his nakedness doesn’t trump his right to use his garden to be naked.

Where has all this cock swinging come from? Dude is lying down peacefully sunbathing. In a garden with high fences all around. OP can totally avoid seeing it by not running upstairs to peer out of the one window that overlooks his garden - and if shes truly that bothered she could plant a tree to block that particular line of sight.

Honestly, the way people are talking you’d think he was running up and down the street with an erection and a big neon sign pointing to it. No wonder Europeans think we’re prudish.

It doesn’t need to, because exactly the same behaviour is also lawful in public. So, even if we assume this falls somewhere between the two, or even if you interpret this to mean he’s somehow in public, it’s still lawful, and the police will not respond.

I must have missed where/when he was swinging it around. When did that happen ?

Redpeach · 15/06/2025 11:23

It poss swings a wee bit if he gets up to move his sun bed

His garden his body his rules. Don’t look if you’re bothered. And certainly don’t point it out to your kids 🤷‍♀️
