New neighbour sunbathing in the nude

ZooHannah · 13/06/2025 22:26

We moved in to our dream home last month, we have a corner plot with only one direct neighbour who is a (I believe) single man and has always been polite and friendly in our initial conversations.

DH looked out of our bedroom window today to see our neighbour sunbathing completely starkers. He came downstairs to tell me and I couldn’t believe it when I went upstairs and saw for myself.

I want to go round to say something however DH has told me I am being ridiculous and he is on his own property so can go what he wants.

AIBU? I appreciate neighbourly relations but I am absolutely repulsed by this.

Ffs, wanting an all-over tan or just enjoying warm sun on bare skin doesn't make anyone an exhibitionist.

I believe it's legal to be naked on all of Denmark's beaches (at least according to the Danish chiropractor I used to go to). They don't stop taking their kids to the seaside for fear they might see a penis.

We’re not in Denmark. Different countries have different customers/cultures FFS. You try walking down a main high street in the skud and you’d soon find yourself sitting in the local police station for questioning.

Imagie some creepy perverted fella laying in his garden knowing that people can see him and the kicks he would be getting… heave

And the law in this situation says it is fine to sunbathe naked in your garden

I was responding to the completely incorrect "he is perfectly entitled to do what he wants in his own garden." This is a lie. The law applies in private as well as public.

Obviously the law on nudity applies differently in parliament, or on the street, or on a beach or in a private garden. But the idea that exhibitionism or some other offence cannot be committed simply because the exhibitionist is on private land is just wrong.

Whether this particular neighbour is a sex offender I do not know, it would depend on the full circmstances.

Except it is true that you can sunbathe nude in your own garden.

I was referring to the wider statement I was responding to, and it is not as simple as " you can sunbathe nude in your own garden."

Edited

The vast majority of men do not sunbathe nude in their back gardens, for all sorts of reasons.

The ones who do so want to be seen. IMO

Utter tripe.

People are generally uptight about nudity in the UK. Not sure why. But he's well within the law just as long as he's not intentionally causing any alarm to neighbours etc. He's not doing any harm and the law would back him up.

Well one reason is that nudism could well be down to exhibitionism, exhibitionism is a paraphila, paraphilias cluster which means people who are exhibitionists (or autogynephiles, or transvestic fetishists) are more likely to be paedophiles or zoophiles or frotteurists compared to other men.

Nudism does not automatically mean a sex crime has been committed, but it might well be a sex crime, and if it is it proves that the paraphiliac concerned is more likely to commit much more serious sex crimes, or escalate to them, than other men.

We had a similar issue but the neighbour would prance around with his todger out. I spoke to our local police who said even in his own garden its exposure. He moved so we did nothing. I’d ask him to put pants on, especially if you have kids. Why he needs to do this is beyond me

I would re-write that last sentence as "Why he WANTS to do this is something we cannot be certain of, but there has to be - at minimum - a good chance it is because he is an exhibitionist".

Utter tripe.

What percentage of the men you know sunbathe naked in their back gardens? Of those who do how many have you asked why they do it, and how convincing were their answers?

Is it really that hard to sunbathe in speedos?

Happycyclist · 14/06/2025 13:46

Jamie... I only know of one .... He has absolutely no interest in anyone other than his wife seeing him.

Why the hell would he have to wear Speedos?
People who are tucked away in their OWN gardens should not have to police their clothing because of some puritanical weirdos next door need to grow up.

tillyandmilly · 13/06/2025 23:24

What's so wrong with a pair if shorts? He knows he is being looked at ! I would not be happy with this either - attention seeker!

But he wants a tanned todger!

It is not puritanical to consider whether the person next door is a sex offender committing a sex offence, and to accept the reality that if he is it could be a sign that he will escalate to the most serious of sex offences.

You are naive. Protect your kids better

And you can be certain of that? lol

mondaytosunday · 14/06/2025 13:54

Jeez. My son sunbathed in our garden starkers. I don’t think it’s ever crossed his mind that the neighbours might be able to see him from their top windows.
Unless the guy is wanking off so what if your kids see him? A nude body is a natural thing.

Do you think the same about women wearing thong bikinis or showing their busts or bums with revealing clothing. Maybe you do but I find a lot of people have one rule for men and another for women.

Someone laying in the sun, starkers, is not a gateway pedophile

Raise your kids better and don't make them paranoid about people existing perfectly normally

Mothership4two · 14/06/2025 13:56

Did you not realise @mondaytosunday that your son was a perv, weirdo, exhibitionist and potential paedophile? 🙄

DoctorRoseReturns · 14/06/2025 13:57

He may not even know he can be seen

Unless he has a big sign saying "naked sunbather here" or is waving it around.... he's not doing anything to draw attention to himself

Courgettezuchinni · 14/06/2025 14:05

We had an older couple on our street who were naturists. The fire escape from a local restaurant overlooked their garden and the staff who smoked on the steps used to complain regularly and put notes through the neighbours door. The Police did nothing.
It was a little disconcerting seeing the neighbour ironing in the nude whilst watching tv in their front lounge. I only hope the iron never slipped! He was an ironer not a todger waver though.

Because this is MN and he's a man

It's surprising more of this thread isn't calling his a sex offender tbh

I think it’s disgusting he’s sitting naked in view of children tbh! I agree OP, he needs to put it away 🤢

This! It’s indecent exposure/flashing and I guarantee there’d be different responses if it was a woman!
