New neighbour sunbathing in the nude

ZooHannah · 13/06/2025 22:26

We moved in to our dream home last month, we have a corner plot with only one direct neighbour who is a (I believe) single man and has always been polite and friendly in our initial conversations.

DH looked out of our bedroom window today to see our neighbour sunbathing completely starkers. He came downstairs to tell me and I couldn’t believe it when I went upstairs and saw for myself.

I want to go round to say something however DH has told me I am being ridiculous and he is on his own property so can go what he wants.

AIBU? I appreciate neighbourly relations but I am absolutely repulsed by this.

I’d find it really uncomfortable if my neighbour was lying naked in the garden where my kids (and me) could easily see them from our upstairs. Just because it’s your own garden you can’t just do whatever the F you like if you are visible!

That’s not true. Being naked in your own garden is not illegal.

Why have Mumsnet taken away the " laugh" response?
You really made me laugh, thank you.

Because Mumsnet is a very serious place for very earnest people, some of whom just can't help themselves from running upstairs to spy on a grown man sunbathing naked in his garden next door, from their bedroom window, then get outraged by this.... why? Well it's because of their children apparently, who probably can't see him from their window if they ever even bothered to look....

Maybe myob OP, leave your neighbour enjoy the relative privacy of his own garden in peace.

Have you considered using him as a novelty sundial?

😆

80smonster · 14/06/2025 10:51

Hopefully this sunbather is going to start his own thread titled ‘AIBU my new neighbours are perverts’.

UndermyShoeJoe · 14/06/2025 10:52

You’re making the choice to go and look out your window at a naked person. I think you’re more in the wrong here. You sought out seeing him.

I sunbathe naked sometimes or just putting the washing out. Sometimes it’s the naked Am run to get clothes off the line I want that day. Sometimes I’m in the pool naked.

Im married though not single if that makes it better.

You could either not look, get some trees or privacy film on the lower half of your windows.

80smonster · 14/06/2025 10:55

@JabbaTheBeachHut penis sundial. You are a genius.

IthinkIamAnAlien · 14/06/2025 10:56

I remember my daughter telling me about a PHSE lesson when they were given condoms and fake penises to teach them how to put the condom on. Does that still happen? Some of you are really going to struggle later........:-)

Lillibridge · 14/06/2025 10:58

I honestly don't see a problem with it. He's in his own garden, minding his own business. It's not as if he's exposing himself, as you have to go upstairs to actually see him. Leave him to get his all over tan!

Yes, it does, whether you like it or not.

tripleginandtonic · 14/06/2025 11:06

Why the heck would you go and look? Perv

AmyW9 · 14/06/2025 11:06

We have this situation. 80 year old neighbour regularly walks around naked in summer. We have low fences (waist height!) and two DD's age 2 and 3 months.

I should have shares in Miracle Gro, with how much I'm putting on the shrubs along our border...

I'm astounded by the replies you're getting here OP. I'd not want to see my neighbour's penis flopping around the garden either. YANBU

Good job you don't live next door to a naturist then!

Are you keen to raise your children to be uncomfortable about the human body? He isn’t right there with them. They have to look through the bedroom window to see him at a distance. You really need to relax!

Disagree.
Sunbathing naked in a place that is visible to children is wrong

OP wouldn't have seen it at all if she hadn't rushed upstairs for a gander!

I don't understand the outrage about children seeing a penis, tbh. It's different if it's a flasher doing it to shock people, but in the relative privacy of his own garden, I really don't get what the issue is.

Says who? The law certainly doesn’t.

JamieCannister · 14/06/2025 11:15

Magenta82 · 13/06/2025 22:29

Leave the guy alone he is perfectly entitled to do what he wants in his own garden.
If it bothers you draw the curtains.

That is simply not true is it? The law is the law, and you can't simply do what you like because you own the land. By your logic paedophilia would only be a crime if committed in a public place.

Seriously, how often do you look out of your upstairs windows and into your neighbours' gardens? I would have to make a special effort to do so. If you don't want to feel uncomfortable, don't go and look out of those windows. It's absolutely that simple.

Do you also feel uncomfortable looking at things like Michelangelo's David?

Actually it's a bit of a grey area when he is visible to neighbours. Having said that it's unlikely he'd be prosecuted but the police would possibly have a word if the neighbours were upset by it.

And the law in this situation says it is fine to sunbathe naked in your garden

uhmm just dont look? just because you can see doesn't mean you have to look. And on this occasion he is not doing whatever the F he likes - he's literally just sunbathing nude.

ohtowinthelottery · 14/06/2025 11:23

Lucky you don't live around here OP. There are regular sightings of a naked cyclist in a nearby village. The naked rambler was once apprehended in our village Post Office too.
If it bothers you that much, just ask him if he's aware he can be seen from your bedroom window (which I feel sure he is aware of but probably doesn't think you spend much time looking out of that window if the only view is his house/garden.)
Then tell your kids it's rude to stare and get on with your lives. We don't get that many sunny days in the UK so I doubt he does it all year round.

People are generally uptight about nudity in the UK. Not sure why. But he's well within the law just as long as he's not intentionally causing any alarm to neighbours etc. He's not doing any harm and the law would back him up.

LakieLady · 14/06/2025 11:25

PITCHpink · 14/06/2025 00:49

That stands to reason but why? Knowing your neighbours can see you. Sounds like an exhibitionist

Ffs, wanting an all-over tan or just enjoying warm sun on bare skin doesn't make anyone an exhibitionist.

I believe it's legal to be naked on all of Denmark's beaches (at least according to the Danish chiropractor I used to go to). They don't stop taking their kids to the seaside for fear they might see a penis.

NDerbys32 · 14/06/2025 11:25

A lift from the College of Policing advice on public nudity

"At the time that the Sexual Offences Act 2003 was debated in Parliament, care was taken to word the legislation in a way specifically intended to avoid it impinging on the rights and activities of naturists. Consequently, the Act requires that a sexual offence dimension would need to be involved for public nudity to constitute the offence of exposure under section 66 the Act. This would involve deliberately exposing genitalia towards another person with the intention of them seeing and being caused alarm or distress (sometimes referred to as indecent exposure)."

I'm a former cop and happy to sunbathe clothes free, as do many people these days. If that was called in, on the merits of what the OP posted, we're really not engaging with it.

Maybe just have a chat that you are concerned that your children can see his penis in their own back garden. He will probably understand.

They can't see it from their own back garden.
