At what age should you stop wearing jeans ?

When are you too old to wear jeans? I've always worn jeans, tee-shirt, fleeces etc. I wore a uniform at work. I can dress up when it's warranted and scrub up quite well. But it's unnecessary and over the top for going to the chip shop !
I do wear nice tops and cardigans when meeting with my friend for lunch.
Is it time to embrace the polyester ?

There’s some really pretty longer tunic tops/blouses. They go great with jeans.

Tunic tops go with nothing other than the bin

I’m flat out refusing to wear anything polyester 🫤

Everything seems to have some polyester in it these days 😥

Wimin123 · 14/06/2025 19:54

I look fab in jeans much better than in dresses and skirts. Mid 60s and get loads of compliments. Tend to wear Reiss, Mac or Levi. The cheaper brands I could wear when younger don’t look as good now.

Ivy888 · 14/06/2025 19:59

Never.
My grandad wore jeans till the day he died.
my MIL has never worn a pair of jeans in her life because they’re for “young girls” (but I don’t particularly want to follow her fashion style)

My Dad who died in 2017 aged 92 wore jeans until the end. He probably didn't wear them when he was younger because they weren't fashionable then. People can wear what they like.

Would they have been 'going out' gear or garden, working on the car gear?

My DGF was slightly older his jeans were strictly pottering around gear. Went to the local pub collar n tied!

Not 'going OUT out' but general day to day wear. Trip out into the Peak District type of thing.

TheHateIsNotGood · 14/06/2025 20:26

I have jeans on most of the time, diy, gardening, etc ones and some I try and not trash by diy/gardening, etc for going out. I've always hated polyester since I was a child.

I intend to wear jeans til death and see age as irrelevant. I do not intend to 'rock' any of my clothing and just wear them. Coming up for 63.

It was a thing in the eighties, nineties. Don’t wear a skirt above the knee over 30. Don’t wear jeans over 40. So pleased that attitude’s been well a truly kicked to the kerb. Women look great in jeans at any age. Elderly people wearing jeans totally rock them from what I’ve seen. Wear what you like and ignore these pathetic outdated ideas.

It was madness wasn’t it. Have hair cut short at 40. Why did these rules exist

It was and it was pretty much uniform the way woman followed. It aged them so much! My mother had that tight perm, once a week at the hairdressers. And polyester of course.

This sounds like the jeans are keeping us alive. Take them off and drop dead.

Like that girl in the story who took off her scarf and her head fell off.

On your 84th birthday take all your denim to the charity shop. While you're there pick up some lovely slacks and some of those big shoes with velcro on.

According to either The G or The O recently (can't remember which, it's an age thing), if you 'can still walk for 10 minutes' in your 80s you're doing well! So, maybe get an Uber to the charity shop. Seriously, my almost 80yr old friend swims three times a week, works out at the gym and walks miles daily. If she chooses to wear jeans why should anything or anyone stop her ?

Totally agree with this actually. No more polyester for me!

I don't think I was ever aware of any of these rules.

Efrogwraig · 14/06/2025 21:00

Never.
My friend Betty wore hers into her 80s. She liked Gap jeans best!

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 14/06/2025 21:05

When you're dead.
Wear what you want and stop caring about what other people think. It's liberating.

yes in my mums generation (born 1950s) and before that
I’m glad you weren’t aware, they are ridiculous controlling expectations

Flomingho · 14/06/2025 22:19

Wear what you want for as long as you want. There is no cut off date for wearing denim.

JohnTheRevelator · 14/06/2025 22:42

Why would you stop wearing a certain item of clothing because you hit a certain age? I'm 61 and still wearing jeans.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 15/06/2025 00:57

Never too old for jeans. I'm 60 and wear them daily and will continue to do so

BooneyBeautiful · 15/06/2025 01:01

ShineBlueSky · 13/06/2025 00:39

When the menopause fades, the waist widens and the hips disappear. This is when the comfy elastic waist pants come along and the jeans hit the donation pile.

I am post menopausal and still wear jeans. I do wear tops that cover the waist though. I haven't worn anything tucked in for many years.

cheesycheesy · 15/06/2025 04:41

I loathe anything tight or clingy around my waist. Age has nothing to do with it

GymBergerac · 15/06/2025 06:13

I almost 56 and wear jeans pretty much any time that I'm not wearing gym gear! And just to upset "the youth" who apparently think it's a faux pas these days, I only wear skinny jeans. They're comfy, look good and I like them 😁

Dillydollydingdong · 15/06/2025 07:11

Still wearing jeans at 73.
