At what age should you stop wearing jeans ?

When are you too old to wear jeans? I've always worn jeans, tee-shirt, fleeces etc. I wore a uniform at work. I can dress up when it's warranted and scrub up quite well. But it's unnecessary and over the top for going to the chip shop !
I do wear nice tops and cardigans when meeting with my friend for lunch.
Is it time to embrace the polyester ?

🙄
Saw a post on FB this week that said women over the age of 50 shouldn't wear tshirts. WTF?

I live in jeans and have no intention of stopping.

We both wear them 67 and 70. I do tend to wear dresses more because I find them comfier. We were looking at clothes in a shop and dh picked up a pair of those beige polyester slacks and said "these look ok" I took them from him and put them back saying "no absolutely not you're not old enough" he wanted to know how old he had to be so I said "dead". He does have normal trousers but definitely not old man trousers.

I can’t imagine my life without jeans, ever. I’m not keen on any social situations where they’re not appropriate.

FalseSpring · 13/06/2025 09:42

I'm in my sixties and because of my middle-aged shape, I have succumbed to elasticated waist jeans and now prefer not to wear skinnies unless with long boots and baggy jumpers in winter. I prefer high-waisted boot cut or wide leg which seem to be better and balancing the proportions. A loose shirt or top generally covers the worst of the spreading middle along with the elasticated waist band!

My mum is in her 70s and wears jeans, I hate them and can never find jeans that fit properly, I think my mum has had hers years they are just straight legged.

Not sure that’s an age thing, distressed jeans have been in and out of fashion since the 80s at least, unless you were already old 45 years ago!

No, still in my 20s in the 1980s and I can remember people wanting jeans to already look faded, but it is the whacking great rips and tears I can never get my head around. Especially as the rips and tears are usually in places where the jeans wouldn't normally have worn through naturally, e.g. on the knees

There are clothes that aren't jeans?

I sometimes wonder if that idea is a novelty for some people.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 13/06/2025 10:30

I've heard it all now!

DiscoDragon · 13/06/2025 10:42

Well I stopped wearing jeans in my 30's, but only because I'd had a lot of abdominal surgery and had a lot of scars and I just got used to wearing looser and more comfortable trousers. Also I get really awful contact dermatitis from the buttons and zips now, same reason I've stopped wearing jewellery! If I didn't have all these annoying issues I'd still be wearing them I'm sure.

When the menopause fades, the waist widens and the hips disappear. This is when the comfy elastic waist pants come along and the jeans hit the donation pile.

My mum will had small waist and curved hips when she died late 70s, and still wore jeans.
You don’t have to lose shape

Pieceofpurplesky · 13/06/2025 11:39

My mum is 84, she looks awesome in her jeans with chunky shoes and a longish jumper.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/06/2025 11:40

No age!

Older people haven’t worn them in the past because they weren’t the clothes of their generation, rather than because they were too old.

My grandparents wouldn’t be seen in them, but my parents in their 70s wear them all the time.

trainedopossum · 13/06/2025 12:49

I visited my 80+yo friend this week and she was wearing a pair of dark wash barrel leg jeans (pleats in front, elastic at the back) which looked incredible on her. My mum is 84 and looks great in white jeans. Denim is classic 🤷🏻‍♀️

Out of interest, when do you think jeans became popular?

EvilDJ · 13/06/2025 14:00

I want jeans to feature in my Ghost outfit so will wear them forever.

MasterBeth · 13/06/2025 14:47

Death

Comefromaway · 13/06/2025 14:49

Never .

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 13/06/2025 15:13

My mum wore them in her 80s!

Courgettezuchinni · 13/06/2025 15:19

I also have a 84yo neighbour/friend and her grandaughter gifted her an old pair of her jeans last week and they fit her exactly! I hope I have her flair and joie de vivre in 20yrs time!

Clawdy · 13/06/2025 15:22

Don't forget the Neil Diamond song "Forever In Blue Jeans"! (Probably already mentioned!)

luckylavender · 13/06/2025 15:24

No such age

Defiantlynot41 · 13/06/2025 15:32

Mary Berry looks fantastic in jeans at 90 years old. I intend to carry on until at least then! https://images.app.goo.gl/nCwYBamwxj13qWGY9

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 13/06/2025 15:43

My dad is pushing 80 and I have never seen him in anything but jeans! Jean shorts in summer...

Shodan · 13/06/2025 15:50

My late mother never wore a pair of jeans in her life, and was always campaigning to get me to wear a Nice Skirt (perhaps a kilt) and some Thick Tights instead of jeans.

I resisted and wear jeans every day and have no intention of stopping (although now, at 56, take them off as soon as I get in and put comfy yoga pants on).

Mind you, if I'd listened to my mother I would've had my hair cut and permed at age 30, since apparently there was an age limit on long hair too.

Judiezones · 13/06/2025 15:52

My friend's mum used to look fabulous in jeans right up until she died aged 93. My advice would be you're never too old for jeans!
