To get most of Dds presents from Temu

DoesntlistentoawordIsay · 11/06/2025 15:19

Dd will be 7 soon.
In past years we’ve probably spent 2-300 on presents, cake etc. She’s normally had a big, main present-new bike, trampoline, then smaller presents
There doesn’t seem to be one big one this year that she wants. Everything she seems to ask for is very basic things that I could get from Temu. She also wants some spending money to shop and choose a few bits herself.
She’s enjoyed her toys over the years, but it does feel like Ive maybe wasted money when I didn’t need to a bit

Sure. Go for it. What could possibly go wrong?

Nothing says Happy Birthday like sweat shop child labour.

HermioneWeasley · 11/06/2025 15:26

Nothing wrong with not spending more than you need to, but I would be very wary of them. AFAIK because they direct ship from china they don’t need to meet the same safety standards as things which go through a UK retailer.

TheSwarm · 11/06/2025 15:28

If you are happy shipping poor quality (and often dangerous) counterfeit goods made by forced labour halfway across the world, crack on.

yestothat · 11/06/2025 15:28

I would think you were unreasonable to shop at Temu in the first place. I also wouldn’t consider buying my child birthday presents that they enjoyed wasting money

ExtraOnions · 11/06/2025 15:31

Temu slave labour …. Children working for next to nothing in a sweat shop, so you child can have some crap that will be chucked or broken within 6 months.

Happy Birthday

PumpkinSparkleFairy · 11/06/2025 15:31

I wouldn’t - you can’t guarantee anything would be child safe or even meet basic safety standards we’re used to when it comes to unpleasant chemicals, choking hazards, fire risk etc. Also the ethical aspect.

I’d see if I could spend less on better quality things or experiences.

Hope your DD has a great birthday!

Mooselooseinmyhoose · 11/06/2025 15:31

There is no issue in buying smaller or cheaper presents for your child. There is an issue in buying from Temu full stop I don't think they even deny use of slave labour any more.

I agree in principle, but I've seen the exact same products sold on Temu on Amazon, in the local (pricey) pet shop, and various other places lately, and I mean exactly the same, not knock-offs. So, unfortunately, buying elsewhere doesn't mean you aren't supporting sweatshops.

justasking111 · 11/06/2025 15:33

I bought a junior snooker table from TEMU. Identical photos and blurb as Amazon but cheaper. It did come over land and sea so took eight weeks. It's fabulous, folds up against the wall. All the grandchildren love it.

I've had two boyfriend shirts, dupes of Ralph Lauren style. They came in three days. People stop and compliment me.

skyeisthelimit · 11/06/2025 15:36

DD is 17, but I get loads of her presents from Temu, all the little bits, posters, pin badges, drinking bottles, musical theatre signs/posters. It is great for odds and ends.

nosyupnorth · 11/06/2025 15:37

Echoing the safety and ethnical concerns above, but also, if your daughter wants simple stuff then get her nice quality simple stuff not the cheapest worst quality versions you can find. Even if money is tight, I'd still say get her a smaller quantity of nice presents than many terrible ones.

Dangermoo · 11/06/2025 15:37

You're asking in the wrong place. You've already been made to feel guilty. Shop where you want.

DurhamDurham · 11/06/2025 15:37

If she doesn’t want a big present I don’t think that means you need to buy her lots of Temu stuff, just a couple of thoughtful smaller presents would be fine. When my two didn’t ask for anything big we used the money for days out and experiences.

I think that we don’t always know when child labour has been used but we do know for a fact that it is used by Temu. I avoid it for that reason.

Exactly! Temu??? You don’t seem to be on the breadline OP so you have no excuse. Don’t be so scuzzy. Invest in some ethics and shop elsewhere.

Pricelessadvice · 11/06/2025 15:38

Could you buy her a few little gifts from somewhere (not temu) to open on the day and then have a girlie day out where she can buy herself some other stuff? You could have a girlie lunch out etc.

But Temu are more likely to be dodging tax so are cheaper than Amazon, but even less ethical.

you are supporting child abuse

BournardTourney · 11/06/2025 15:43

Try vinted, eBay, Etsy and it’s still car boot season

And your not concerned that those little bits and pieces were very likely made by kids far younger than your daughter forced into working, at all?

TomatoSandwiches · 11/06/2025 16:09

I honestly don't know why anyone one this earth would buy anything from Temu so YABU.

Counterfeit goods?

Well best don't buy anything that's made in China or imported from there.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 11/06/2025 16:12

It seems a bit odd to choose between the two extremes of hundreds of pounds on a really good present and... a load of cheap tat from Temu. Nothing wrong with buying her multiple little things, but why not get nicer ones not from Temu?
