To get most of Dds presents from Temu

DoesntlistentoawordIsay · 11/06/2025 15:19

Dd will be 7 soon.
In past years we’ve probably spent 2-300 on presents, cake etc. She’s normally had a big, main present-new bike, trampoline, then smaller presents
There doesn’t seem to be one big one this year that she wants. Everything she seems to ask for is very basic things that I could get from Temu. She also wants some spending money to shop and choose a few bits herself.
She’s enjoyed her toys over the years, but it does feel like Ive maybe wasted money when I didn’t need to a bit

You can get cheaper bits from other places. DD8 loves jellycats. The ones she likes are 20-30 quid (so well under what you typically pay). I would never shop temu. I shopped from shein once, learnt about their practices and the quality of the stuff was so bad. Never again.

Of course it makes a difference. If people stop buying cheap shit from Temu, they'll stop supplying it. If there is no demand for something, there is no reason for anyone to make it in the first place.

But it's much easier just to make excuses and carry on regardless, isn't it.

It's a nice thought and we like to think we have more control over what happens in the world than we do.

It's the truth.

The principle driver behind anyone selling anything is whether there is demand, which for retail goods is driven by consumers.

I agree in principle, but I've seen the exact same products sold on Temu on Amazon, in the local (pricey) pet shop, and various other places lately, and I mean exactly the same, not knock-offs. So, unfortunately, buying elsewhere doesn't mean you aren't supporting sweatshops.

I don't buy from Amazon either.( unless I have checked out the seller and for the same reasons as not using TEMU ( or Shein)

I addition, our high streets are dying, taking with it peoples livelihood and our sense of community.

Nothing says Happy Birthday like sweat shop child labour.

There is nothing wrong with not spending much but I think you are being unreasonable shopping at Temu.
Go to a charity shop, use vinted , look on marketplace etc

BeardofHagrid · 11/06/2025 17:16

I got some stuff from Temu recently. Mostly the quality is great. At checkout make sure you change the delivery to Royal Mail as Evri lost my first order!

Pinty · 11/06/2025 17:17

ChopstickNovice · 11/06/2025 16:40

What I'd like is a way to know that something hasn't been bought off Temu and is then being sold on. At a craft fayre last week and so much of the stuff looks exactly like Temu crap that Facebook ads push on me, except it's obvs about 10 times the price. Do I straight up ask if it's handmade by them?

Yes. Of course you can ask if they have handmade it. I often ask in bakers shops where the items were baked , it's no different from that

If you were going to boycott all goods made in places with dubious working conditions, you'd probably not be able to buy very much at all.

Agree. If you shop at Amazon, marketplace, ebay, independant instagram shops etc you may sadly often just as well order from Temu.

tammienorrie · 11/06/2025 17:24

Cheap shit made in China, by slaves in sweatshops, designs ripped off, no compliance with safety standards, with a side order of getting your data stolen.

Yeah, Temu is great. 🙄

Pointless asking a bunch of stuck up snobs on here OP. It’s no different to buying stuff from anywhere else.

Pointless asking if anything from temu could be dangerous to give to a child. Blardy snobs, caring and shit.

Megifer · 11/06/2025 17:35

I've genuinely never had an issue with anything from Temu. Which did surprise me I thought it would all be absolute crap but I've bought clothes, household stuff like flash duster refills that are ridiculously priced in Tesco, duvet sets, throws, towels, stocking fillers for DC, nieces etc. It's all been really good tbf

Sure, I probably do buy stuff that is as problematic as what you can get from Temu.

But never, ever knowingly. I know that Temu/aliexpress etc support slave labour, so I don't use them. If I find out that I've in the past bought stuff from somewhere similar, then I can't change that but I can not shop there again.

And how do you feel about your kids' stocking fillers being made by slaves who are children too?

WestwardHo1 · 11/06/2025 17:37

Sorry, you spend £200 to £300 on a young kid's birthday present? Every year? 😮

And YABU. Temu is shit. Shit company, shit ethics, shit products.

SendBooksAndTea · 11/06/2025 17:38

They usually sell things which aren't CE registered and so could potentially be unsafe. I wouldn't be buying things for my child from there.

This.

Why would you shop at Temu when you know all the issues with it?!

You are wrong then. I've been shopping ethically for years.

Pickled21 · 11/06/2025 17:45

What is it that you are worried about? That she'll find this years offering a bit lacklustre compared to previous years or something else? I'd buy her the things she wants but nicer versions tbh and then give her money.

I do t disagree. I’m saying loads of the stuff on the high street is the exact same as the stuff on Temu. So people who think that , just by not using Temu or Shein, they’re being more ethical, not necessarily so.

I don’t use Temu, and I try not to buy very much at all to be honest, but our own shops aren’t exactly paragons of virtue either.

scorpiogirly · 11/06/2025 17:56

I wouldn't touch any of it. The materials and plastics and metals can have toxic ingredients. Not to mention the make up. There's a c4 doc on it.

legoplaybook · 11/06/2025 18:06

Get her less stuff that's made to better standards and is safety tested.

No 7 year old wants a load of plastic crap that will break in 5 minutes and is probably made with toxic materials.

okydokethen · 11/06/2025 18:08

Temu is trash with a terrible reputation. Do you really need all that junk shipped to you across the world?
