To get most of Dds presents from Temu

DoesntlistentoawordIsay · 11/06/2025 15:19

Dd will be 7 soon.
In past years we’ve probably spent 2-300 on presents, cake etc. She’s normally had a big, main present-new bike, trampoline, then smaller presents
There doesn’t seem to be one big one this year that she wants. Everything she seems to ask for is very basic things that I could get from Temu. She also wants some spending money to shop and choose a few bits herself.
She’s enjoyed her toys over the years, but it does feel like Ive maybe wasted money when I didn’t need to a bit

Temu stuff is the same as tik tok shop and lots is from same suppliers on Amazon

Sorry, you spend £200 to £300 on a young kid's birthday present? Every year? 😮

And YABU. Temu is shit. Shit company, shit ethics, shit products.

£200-£300 on a child's birthday isn't exactly shock worthy. Pretty average sum to spend.

GranTeton4 · 11/06/2025 18:19

People wont buy from temu/shein but will buy from amazon.... who sale the stuff from shein/temu.

Buy what you want from where you want. Some stuff from their is crap and some of it is decent.
Quality of the clothing is mostly fine, same as primark/asda.

Kids only play/use things for a short time before they outgrow it anyway.

I wouldn't buy any unbranded stuff online for children, whether it's Temu, Amazon or ebay.

It's perfectly possible to buy recognisable brands and quality stuff from Amazon that is not the shit they sell on Temu.

OK? thousands of others do.

CombatBarbie · 11/06/2025 18:40

Like shein, they have alot of uk sellers now. It's now like amazon rather than sweat shop.

clarrylove · 11/06/2025 18:45

Shipping cheap tat across the world is not sustainable. If you want your children and their children to have decent futures then teach them about responsible consumerism. It sounds like she doesn't want loads of things anyway. Maybe buy some nice bits locally and spend quality time with her going out to carefully spend her birthday money.

I also feel like issues like these are up to governments round the world to deal with...not me as an individual

Yeah sod climate change , famine, war. Nowt to do with us. I’m being facetious but we might not have the power to bring the likes of Temu to account but we don’t have to hand over our hard earned money

See if you buy good quality stuff you can donate it to a charity shop afterwards and you are not adding to landfill. But hey if you’re shopping at Temu you clearly don’t give a flying f about anything or anyone other than yourself so crack on.

Dear me, OP. You do realise this is Mumsnet, don’t you? Where everyone “sources” handmade wooden toys from an artisan crafter who lovingly designs and makes the toys in a solar-powered hut

Most people here have kids and hate the idea of other people’s kids being forced to work in these factories.

Or a basic level of humanity. Caring about working conditions isn’t being a snob or posh.

Yogabearmous · 11/06/2025 19:14

Anything from china has the risk of being from a sweat shop. It’s not just Temu sadly, it’s rife from that area of the world.

caringcarer · 11/06/2025 19:19

I've bought lots of bits on Temu and have been pleased with them. From kaleidoscopes to greaseproof sheets for air fryer. I've seen identical items on Amazon for much more. You have to wait a bit longer to get them, often over a week, but I don't mind that.

Did you download the app? I've been inundated with the annoyingly catchy advert for Temu that much, that I think I'm going to take a look. Power of advertising eh!

Hi @DoesntlistentoawordIsay
This is me - i have never and can never order from Temu or Shein because despite being broke/in debt, I would spend in a charity shop or buy secondhand from facebook but cant bring myself to buy from these exploitative chinese business.

Child labour or enforced labour to achieve ridiculously low price points revolts me. This is me.

I would rather buy something small and know materials are safe (what is the provenance of how cheap fabrics are produced - risk to human health and ecology?)

I wantes to raise awareness of the thical and ecological impact on buying cheap "tat" that is broken or forgotten about before the next birthday.

End of sermon x

Nonsense @FreyjaOfTheNorth and just a poke for response. You have one calling you out

Of course we dont "all" buy in that manner. Some do. Some others (that you ignore for a cheap dig) are ethically aware and responsible (and broke). I am one of the latter and buy second hand and from local services eg a day out at a local attraction.

Feel free to ignore mumsnetters like me but we are here nonetheless 🙃

Foreverm0re · 11/06/2025 16:13

Pointless asking a bunch of stuck up snobs on here OP. It’s no different to buying stuff from anywhere else.

WTF????

it’s not snobby to buy second hand and to have morals.

purpleygrey · 11/06/2025 19:47

ChungkingDepressed · 11/06/2025 15:31

I agree in principle, but I've seen the exact same products sold on Temu on Amazon, in the local (pricey) pet shop, and various other places lately, and I mean exactly the same, not knock-offs. So, unfortunately, buying elsewhere doesn't mean you aren't supporting sweatshops.

I agree with this. A little boutique near me clearly buys a lot of their stock from temu.

they mix it in with the other stock and unless you had seen it on temu you wouldn’t be able to tell.

Not in my world it isn't. Its a massive sum to spend on a small child's birthday. No wonder people get into crazy debt

MamaAndTheSofa · 11/06/2025 22:37

If you see “the same stuff” in a local shop as you saw on Temu, how can you insist they’re identical products? Temu steal designs from people all the time, and then reproduce them without the quality control. A lot of their items have been found to not meet safety standards, which has included things like lead in the paint - the things you see on Temu and the things you see in your local shop may look the same, but that doesn’t mean that they are.

In fact, if a shop is selling stuff they got on Temu there’s a good chance they’re breaking the law, because it won’t have had the required safety checks carried out.

OP, I wouldn’t risk buying stuff from Temu; if your DD is happy with not much stuff, that’s great - encourage her to stay that way!

TiredMame · 11/06/2025 22:41

I bought something from TEMU and the exact same thing is on Amazon. Exact same thing with a £20 difference. There is no way I’m paying £20 more than I need to and anyone who says they will is a liar.

florasl · 11/06/2025 22:56

justasking111 · 11/06/2025 15:33

I bought a junior snooker table from TEMU. Identical photos and blurb as Amazon but cheaper. It did come over land and sea so took eight weeks. It's fabulous, folds up against the wall. All the grandchildren love it.

I've had two boyfriend shirts, dupes of Ralph Lauren style. They came in three days. People stop and compliment me.

Do you mean illegal counterfeits?

justasking111 · 11/06/2025 23:06

Ralph Lauren don't have the monopoly on boyfriend shirts striped lots of websites sell them.

As a hobby seamstress I have to say that the quality of stitching was excellent. I couldn't have done as good a job . Shirts are a beast to make.
