To get most of Dds presents from Temu

DoesntlistentoawordIsay · 11/06/2025 15:19

Dd will be 7 soon.
In past years we’ve probably spent 2-300 on presents, cake etc. She’s normally had a big, main present-new bike, trampoline, then smaller presents
There doesn’t seem to be one big one this year that she wants. Everything she seems to ask for is very basic things that I could get from Temu. She also wants some spending money to shop and choose a few bits herself.
She’s enjoyed her toys over the years, but it does feel like Ive maybe wasted money when I didn’t need to a bit

No, I would not buy from there. It's cheap crap made by child slave labour, anyone with any morals would know to stay clear instead of adding to their profit whilst the child gets 50p for the week.

I buy from ethically sourced brands, so that doesnt apply to me

Stuff on Temu is cheap for a reason.

It’s low quality tat made by low paid, over worked people.

& it feels really low effort too.

TaggieO · 12/06/2025 00:35

When a consumer watchdog tested a load of Temu products, they were all found to carry higher levels of carcinogens than are allowed in uk products.

Exactly ! So when you buy something directly from China you have no control of what's in their products. When a shop buys a stock of Chinese products they need to be tested (samples) before being sold.

That + horrible working conditions, child labour etc is why I would never buy from shein, temu or Amazon/Ebay non branded stuff from China.

Same with Shein. I wouldn’t associate with anyone that thinks it okay to buy from them.

EveryDayisFriday · 12/06/2025 07:34

Temu, alibaba & Shein do not manufacture anything. They are marketplaces where they ship from thousands of suppliers. The same suppliers that supply Amazon, eBay sellers and other UK stores (with their mark up on top). There will always be some unscrupulous manufacturers in all countries, knowing for 100% certainty which product was made by them is always going to be difficult.

NJLX2021 · 12/06/2025 07:44

For the slave-labour comments.

Temu and similar shops work by allowing the Chinese manufacturer or distributor to sell directly to the UK customer, cutting out the import business and local retailor.

E.g. (Purely hypothetical)
Product costs $1 to manufacture
Sells on TEMU for $7.

Same identical product costs $1 to manufacture,
Sells to an importer for $7
Then sells on Amazon for $14

Same identical product costs $1 to manufacture,
Sells to a large retail chain who rebrand it, and put some gloss/packaging around itfor $8
In their shop for $18

etc.

In theory the importer and shop are doing a degree of quality control, and are filtering a lot of the 'crap' that is out there, so you don't see it.

But it is all coming from the same places... Your more expensive item is still likely coming from similar Chinese, Vietnamese factories as the TEMU stuff. Just because it costs more, doesn't mean that poor factory worker gets more money. All of that extra cost is going to the businesses along the chain.

Of course, you can only buy things made in the UK... except they often contain components and parts produced in China. And the UK also has issues with factory slave-like working conditions (see the reports about Leicester and the clothing industry...)

NJLX2021 · 12/06/2025 07:46

For the OP.

Just buy what she wants. If what she wants is on Amazon, TEMU, local supermarket, Argos, etc. it doesn't matter as long as it is the same. If it isn't the same, then its up to you to figure out which one is better and more suitable.

I have morals and integrity, I don’t need to buy cheap crap from china.

twoleggedpirate · 12/06/2025 07:56

Be wary as I used Temu once then my credit card was duplicated and it was a nightmare sorting it out. I’m convinced it was linked

Good luck with that.

I guarantee that you are currently using Chinese components daily.

You just don't know they are Chinese because they are integrated into production processes in other countries.

For example China produces nearly 80% of the worlds battery components. as well as a lot of micro-electronic components used in a lot of tech devices. It is highly likely that the device you used to write this exact post was made in China, or contains components made in China.

Also - that 'cheap crap' has been a large part of the single largest lifting of impoverished people in human history. China has (through manufacturing the 'crap' that we want) lifted 800 million people out of poverty over the past 40 years.

I have family there. Grandparents who knew starvation, and reminisce fondly about eating the leaves off trees because their parents had no food to give them. Now the current generation grows up in safe, prosperous enviroments, far away from the poverty of their grandparents. All thanks to that "Cheap crap" that you hate so much.

Feel free to throw away your phone if you are that "moral". Even Korean Samsung phones which do 0 manufacturing in China, contain Chinese components.

I don’t know about the PP, but I’m eyeing up this to replace my current phone - shop.fairphone.com/fairphone-5?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=uk_pmax&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20547538014&gbraid=0AAAAAC93AwcRdcGYpivV-xYrLfQB3dz-q&gclid=CjwKCAjw9anCBhAWEiwAqBJ-c34qrQNMRlgWO9Ldpnn1fEuzez8TGcWkI1lci4xXgQXsjoJP3DwLDhoCF2oQAvD_BwE

No way I would ever buy anything from Temu

tammienorrie · 12/06/2025 08:58

Such lazy thinking and it's always the same shitty attitudes on these threads. It's the same stuff on Amazon/Ebay so buying on Temu and SHein is fine. One person's actions makes no difference. If there was a problem, the government would ban it. All other stores are the same.

It's really depressing and people will turn a blind eye to anything in their desire for cheap shit.

justasking111 · 12/06/2025 09:26

I discovered a while ago that the raw ingredients of many of our drugs are produced in China, transported to India, made into pills and potions, then forwarded to Europe where they are packaged.

Nobel · 11/06/2025 18:46

See if you buy good quality stuff you can donate it to a charity shop afterwards and you are not adding to landfill. But hey if you’re shopping at Temu you clearly don’t give a flying f about anything or anyone other than yourself so crack on.

Oh it most be cold up there on your high horse.

GranTeton4 · 12/06/2025 11:15

WestwardHo1 · 11/06/2025 20:56

Not in my world it isn't. Its a massive sum to spend on a small child's birthday. No wonder people get into crazy debt

Its really not a massive sum of money though.

WestwardHo1 · 12/06/2025 11:24

If there was a problem the government would ban it

How naive can you be?

justasking111 · 12/06/2025 12:44

When I bought a snooker table from TEMU it went through customs in two countries en route. I presume a lot of things do.

I once bought a second hand dbag for $25 USA. From eBay Wanted it for a poppy display remembrance weekend. Customs decided it was more valuable. The royal mail charged me £8. Customs an extra £18. All the paperwork work was in order for this plastic bag.. I told them to keep it.
