Finding smoking a really sad thing to do?

Unreasonable or not? I don't get it, and I feel sorry for people outside getting a fix in the rain, it just looks a bit sad really.

God I miss sitting smoking outside in a nice sunny beer garden, or being outside on the balcony at a party and flirting with someone. Or the different coloured ones with gold tips. Basically I miss being young!

Obviously it kills you and smells horrible but still! I was never addicted though and basically socially smoked until about 30 and then stopped with no drama. Had one at a wedding last year and found it gross.

Sunshine1500 · 07/06/2025 21:41

I don’t even smoke and this thread has made me fancy a cigarette 🤣

I loved a menthol top Consulate Berkley or Richmond. Sadly menthol are no more. I'd give anything for a wee menthol behind the wheelie bin 😆

There are cards you put into your pack of cigs which makes them taste mentholy or smoke rolling tobacco rollies, menthol filters.

pilates · 07/06/2025 21:43

I prefer to see someone smoking than vaping.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 07/06/2025 21:45

And... I smoked 14 a day for 20 years and only gave up for financial reasons 5 years ago I savoured every single puff
I now savour every puff of my vape mod.
I make my own vape liquid too( works out at 80p instead of £6 per 50ml) a corner of my kitchen worktop now looks like a chemistry lab!
Live and let live and all that

BurntBroccoli · 07/06/2025 21:47

I started smoking at uni as people would offer me one! I only ever liked the menthol ones though! Gave up after uni.

That's why I'm puzzled at some of the replies here, why people seem not to give a stuff about their health.

Because the feeling and the addiction outweighs the negatives. Like anything 'bad'. So junk food, sugar, and recreational drugs, the pleasure element is so strong that it overides everything else.
Also, some people are prone to pleasure seek, some peoples brains get addicted easier than others, some its trauma response or self medication for stress/or adhd etc even if they don't actually know thats why they are doing it.
There is neuroscience behind why people smoke, take drugs etc, if you have never felt the need to escape and then felt that pleasure and calm that comes from nictotine or other drugs even alcohol, then you are lucky.
Some people get the same from excercise and excercise exessively, some people swap extreme excercise for hard drugs or the other way around as its a similar high. Just watch the Bradley Wiggins documentary. Its all similar, nicotine is a drug.

🤣 Weirdly me too!
I used to watch Sex and the city while smoking menthol cigarettes and enjoying a glass of Sauvignon Blanc.

Actually I’ve just poured a glass of Sav, so maybe that’s why?!
its rubbish that things that feel good are bad for us 🤣

Yes, addiction is sad. I was a smoker for years. You become a slave to the substance; it becomes your number one priority. The addiction cuts a neurological pathway that overrides your normal survival and reward systems. You are a slave and have little to no free will. You hate yourself but you can't stop. Luckily it is possible to quit, but the person has to be ready.

^ this.

Spending hard-earned money buying a drug to burn and inhale to ease cravings and appease an addiction when you know it makes you stink and causes cancer.

InterestedDad37 · 07/06/2025 21:55

I've given up, but at times have smoked very heavily. It is literally an addiction; it can take time for your body and mind to adjust to not having that which they are accustomed to having.

pilates · 07/06/2025 21:43

I prefer to see someone smoking than vaping.

why? Confused
I quit a 30 a day smoking habit with a vape, and it is much much better for me
A colleague used to tell me how vaping would kill me while sparking up one of her 40 a day fags and hacking up a lung

summerscomingsoon · 07/06/2025 22:08

ClaudiaAndHerFringe · 07/06/2025 21:40

@summerscomingsoon But they are. I went out for Sunday lunch the other week and there's a room just behind the restaurant area that leads out to the smoking area. We didn't know that at the time but kept smelling smoke, and thought at first they'd lit the log fire but it was intermittent. Turns out the door to the smoking area was wedged open and second hand smoke drifting in to where people were eating. It was not pleasant.

I agree, that's horrible.

I do smoke occasionally but no one would ever see me do it. Privately at home. but I cannot stand the smell of second hand smoke.

It is common to smoke in public as it is a disgusting habit. Shouldn't be allowed in or near places selling food.

God I loved smoking. If it wouldn't kill me I would start again immediately

Same here! I’d start again in a flash if it wasn’t so unhealthy.

Tina294 · 07/06/2025 19:37

I think it shows just how addictive smoking is when it's completely gross to anyone who has never smoked - but people who have smoked still miss it decades later.

I’m not still addicted 🤣

I had a cigarette on my Christmas night out having not smoked for about 10 years and honestly nearly threw up. I don’t crave nicotine.

Smoking was delicious; it was fabulous with food and after food and instead of food. Nothing made me look cooler and the smoking area is the most fun you’ll have on a night out - I still frequent them now (albeit without a cigarette).

I won’t ever smoke again, but knowing someone has no only never tried a cigarette, but actively looks down on those who have, is a fantastic friend filter: ie too boring for me to bother with

Smoking is fantastic. I have never looked cooler than when I smoked, and it’s an amazing way to stay skinny. I regularly wish I didn’t care about my health so that I could take it back up. Nothing beats a strong, black coffee and a cigarette for breakfast somewhere beautiful like a terrace in Nice

Yup. This.

TheFormidableMrsC · 07/06/2025 22:30

Sunshine1500 · 07/06/2025 21:39

That’s good you feel better, but I’d rather use nicotine patches/inhaler/gum than vapes. These are all licensed and regulated at least we know what’s in them and the long term effects.

I disagree, I don’t think there’s much in it. Vapes
are literally vapour with nicotine in. It’s another way to get the nicotine hit. Not saying it’s great but I am saying it’s made a huge difference to my breathing, chest, cough and the ability to run for exercise.

Not for me...my neighbour smokes and the fumes smell, not to mention the health issues that comes with it...my neighbour has no teeth and she isn't evem 30 yet...not for me

Smoking is way cooler than vaping.

Yeah right. Can you IMAGINE Steve McQueen vaping?

Vape wankers.

ilovepixie · 07/06/2025 22:35

I fucking loved smoking. I started because Sexy Sandy in Grease looked so cool smoking! Sitting on a balcony in the sun with a cocktail and a fag, nothing beats it. Had to stop due to my health and I miss it!

DoingItForTheKids25 · 07/06/2025 22:37

The smokers on here professing how cool they looked actually looked just as stupid as the people who vape these days do, they just didn't realise it.
Sincerely, a lifetime non-smoker who always thought smokers looked stupid
