Now I’m going to be grinning my way round Aldi wondering who’s thinking I’ve got ideas above my station if I randomly find myself loading my cheap veg and good value gin into a Waitrose bag!

ThisOchreScroller · 05/06/2025 22:52

I don't really understand the cars argument. Someone has to buy the cars new, and then sell them on; then all the "real old-money" people can run them into the ground, never wash them and preserve the interior under a layer of dog hair according to the Mumsnet stereotype.

Personalised licence plates

Hey!!! I’m skint but DH bought one for our milestone anniversary. Not to appear rich but a sentimental one for us.

I have a friend who is very well off (at least, compared to me 😂) and she says she likes the freedom to do exactly what works for her. You wouldn't know it to look at her kids as she dresses them in supermarket stuff (she especially likes the Tu stuff as she says it's quite good for lanky kids) and wears cheap stuff, quite often Primark or H&M, herself. She has ADHD and runs hot, and finds expensive clothes are often too thick and sweaty for her. She does spend a lot on shoes though - one good-quality pair of boots, trainers, wellies, flats, heels, each replaced when it needs to be. She says that she's learnt with ADHD and kids that impulse-buying is a real issue, and it's necessary for her mental health to have routines in place not only for everyday life but also for making purchases so it's all "automated" in a way that reduces stress - when one item wears out or is outgrown, exactly the same item is ordered again (in a size bigger if necessary) and it's a real stress for her if she can't get hold of the same item again. She buys the next size up on stuff on Vinted a lot. We've had some very interesting conversations about this!

The one thing she seems to spend a lot on is treating her kids and friends (including us sometimes) to cakes and coffee in an expensive cake shop near their school. It's bizarre. She'll invite us there wearing joggers with holes in the knees and a cheap t-shirt and then insist on buying the kids whatever really expensive cake they want and the adults coffee at £5 plus for a cappuccino and insist on paying for everyone.

I'm not sure quite where she fits in your thread, OP, but it did make me think of her.

People who actually have money don't need to advertise it. I love nothing more than rocking up to BC or First in a comfortable track suit and watching all these glammed up women (especially) with their fake LV/Dior bags hoping to get upgraded...the look of hatred when I waddle on the plane and turn left .... because I actually paid for my ticket... sorry I'm not normally a gloater but airports definitely do something to some people including me 😁

Most cars with new number plates! (I'm aware many get these for work so that's a bit different).

The fact of the matter is, most people can't afford a new car outright but for some INSANE reason this nation insists on persuading random strangers that they are indeed loaded by driving around in a car that they can't afford. When I see them, I do often think if the person driving it knows it's the biggest depreciating asset a person can own.

I'm all for a BMW 1 series with an old number plate if it's got low mileage and runs well!

My best mate gets a brand new car cash every three years. She doesn't care if it looses half its value just driving off the forecourt. She likes having a pristine car that doesn't need a MOT or repairs. She is minted as she has a great degree and works in high earning industry. Did I say she pays cash?

When I look at her earning £150,000 with her brand new car all I see is a strong woman who can enjoy her hard work. I don't think that's try hard. She's laughing mortgage free in her five bed detached house.

Maybe add five bed detached house owned outright to the list then. Screams poverty. Gasp... in Surrey, of all England's cease pits

...or perhaps they love their babies so much, that they spend the money they don't have in buying them nice clothes? SO they have what they themselves never had?

Nothing screams "British class system" more than a bunch of vipers believing others wear or drive specific things "to appear richer".

How is spending hundreds on nice clothes helping your baby in any way shape or form, literally putting yourself in debt for it? It’s not a show of affection it’s just stupidity.

It's a shame when the babies get on the move and then aren't allowed to do activities which might get them dirty.

Fake watches, and taking your Waitrose bags for life to Aldi!

I do this, because the new Aldi bags for life are rubbish!

No that’s just normal when those are the only bags you actually have in your car. Not trying to act rich it’s just whatever you have at the end of the day I take any bag into any supermarket who cares. I take my Waitrose bags into Asda all the time because normally I shop at Waitrose but Asda is on the way home from work.

IfIDid · 05/06/2025 22:01

The posts so far make no sense. No one who’s ‘broke’ is going to be buying their teenagers designer clothes or Dior bags!

I'm guessing you must live under a rock then! 😏

Mardyybum · 05/06/2025 22:58

Driving a Range Rover evoke

ButteredRadish · 05/06/2025 22:58

Oh no not another of these poor-bashing threads. They alllllways descend into essentially a bullying fest of people making digs at things they just don’t like! Rather than what they perceive to actually be ‘trying to look rich’

PyongyangKipperbang · 05/06/2025 22:59

For me it is people with hair that clearly hasnt seen a hairdressers in a long time, supermarket basic clothes but expensive coats, bags and shoes. I say that because that is me!!!

Cant afford more than Tu at best in terms of clothing (although they are very good) but when I could I bought classic good quality stuff that would last. And you can carry off any amount of cheap crap with a good coat for example.

Oh come on an awful lot of people flying BC or First are using points from their literal business flights or they work in the travel industry.🤣

What a nasty little thread

A big new car, hardly any are bought cash it's not impressive

@weareallcats I live in a terraced house in one of the most expensive neighbourhoods in the South West! But I still firmly believe if you can’t afford off-street parking owning a shiny new Range Rover is extremely cringe behaviour.

To be honest the other person on this thread has it right - you shouldn’t really have one unless you’re deep in the country.

Then why do you think living in a terraced house means you're broke? I don't get it.

I don't like it either, quite sneery, apart from the self effacing posts.
Won't be reading further.

Why did you read this far?

Anything that is conspicuous consumption ie showing brand names. These days common luxury vehicles eg BMW, Audi, Mercedes - everyone has one these days.

I don't.

I'm baffled by some of the suggestions. Plenty of things mentioned cost a lot of money. Yes, some of them might be tacky in our opinion but they still cost.

I think people are more likely to try and give the impression they are rich through their words and actions. Plenty of people like to think they are a cut above.

Bloozie · 05/06/2025 23:03

Punching down and judging people for doing or buying stuff they enjoy.

Am I playing properly?

Bad hair extensions that hang like curtains
spidery eyelashes. Sharpie eyebrow
LV bag you bought in Lewisham market
heels that clack as they scrape about like a prize Clydesdale

Same sex children in identical outfits

Excessive jewellery

Pug dogs

“Same sex children in identical outfits”

Why would this make someone look wealthy? Surely it costs as much to dress the same sex siblings in different outfits, as it does in matching ones - or am I missing something?

ButteredRadish · 05/06/2025 23:06

re: leased vehicles, may I just point out that Motability have 69,000 vehicles on the road at present, all less than 3 years old, leased to disabled people who just need a car! To them it’s a lifeline. It just makes most sense to Motability for them to be brand new (warranties & re-sale value) so they can sell them post-lease. So those of you looking down your upturned noses at brand new cars should think for a moment about whether that person is actually disabled. On Motability you can get all sorts from Kia to a small Audi or Mercedes. We don’t all drive round in Citroen Berlingos!
