To ask what one extinct thing you would bring back from your childhood?

By “thing” - I don’t mean people. I’m sure there are people from our childhoods that we would all want to bring back more than any “thing” in the world.

The thing that I would bring back would be tinned Spaghetti Hoops with Hotdogs in Smokey-Bacon Sauce by Heinz.

Best thing ever in the 90s IMHO!

Galaxy truffle eggs - I know they still make small ones but they're nowhere near as good as the creme egg sized ones were

Ferrero Mint

Body Shop "summer rain" shower gel

Woolies

Cremola foam (quite probably tastes disgusting but I remember it fondly!)

Dreamer2027 · 06/06/2025 16:49

Lyons cupcakes, spira and the secret chocolate bar.

Needlenardlenoo · 06/06/2025 17:50

It being unacceptable to make loud recorded noise on public transport.

Chelsea Girl
I shopped there from the mid 80’s.

Bentalls in Kingston. The department store, not the mall 😞I always loved the Christmas department as a child.

I'm afraid I had negative associations with Bentalls because it was where we had to buy our overpriced and uncomfortable school uniform!

oh and milkmen and their electric carty things

Yes, and bakers' and grocers' vans.

Common sense.

Don't think that's ever been common. As a friend of mine says, it should be called 'Rare Sense'.

Slam door trains

They were short-lived but cadbury's did a range of mid-sized chocolate bars which were in a few flavours, I think, I remember the mint one and also a tifin one. They were lovely. They also had the foil wrap with the paper case. I miss that old packaging too of Cadbury's as I remember it from a child... None of this plastic wrapping we get now!

Border eggs. Crème eggs but with chocolate fondant filling. Circa 1980. No one remembers them except me. Where are my people ?

JohnTheRevelator · 06/06/2025 23:57

Toffo sweets. Especially the mint ones.

Loved the song in it 😆

I remember that advert, it was a half eaten peperami and it was shouting “come back and finish me off you bastard!”

Spira, Mars Delight, Marble and Raspberry ruffle chocolate bars.

Pogs. Avon Pretty Peach and Colour trend. Body shop bath beads.

A sense of optimism, being in the moment, no phones, kids respecting their elders, seemingly endless sunny days.

Our local Bargain Buys store sells Raspberry Ruffle bars.

Peaks (Class 45 & 46 railway locomotives)
The 1955 Manxman (Isle of man ferry used in Yentl & A Night to Remember)
P&A Campbell paddle steamer Bristol Queen

I remember the Manxman - it had a spell in Preston docks as a nightclub! I went dancing there a couple of times, mid-late 80s.

Cabana chocolate bar and the Pipkins.

You want to look at Hartley hare and the glove puppet on YouTube

Aquicksitdown · 07/06/2025 03:04

Gap perfume from the 90s - Dream, Grass and I forget the other scents. Dream was so lovely, I could only afford the mini version in a sort of frosted metallic bottle. Would love to smell it again!

Jam doughnuts from a proper bakery.

Not the stodgy, tasteless, miserly filled doughnuts you get from every supermarket nowadays.

They are still around proper bakeries, but you may have to hunt around. We've got 3 or 4 within a 5 mile radius (one within walking distance unfortunately).

We've got a milkman too, but no electric cart

Lindajonesjustcantlivemylife · 07/06/2025 03:16

Rise and shine just for the hell of it
Satche of powdered additives and chemicals to make orange juice.
I remember when it came out in the 70s.

Rvethetgergwtbteh · 07/06/2025 03:41

Lots of the ones I miss have already been mentioned - milky lunch bars, Spira, Toffos, tootie frooties, woolies pick n Mix.

I also miss Terrys Neopolitans, the boxes of tiny mini bars of Dairy Milk, big rectangle boxes of smarties (there seemed to be loads in them), Cadbury nuts about caramel bars. I also liked the drink Tab Clear.

I also loved waiting for the latest edition of Big! Magazine, smash hits, Bliss, Sugar.

Taping the top 40 singles on a Sunday and hoping not to record the DJs voice talking over it!

I miss Woolworths, C&A and BHS

I miss the freedom of having fun without worrying someone would film or photograph it and share it with loads of randoms online.

A world without social media, living in the moment, people making an effort with each other. Not feeling constantly watched and not being expected to be available 24/7. If you phoned your friend on their landline and they didn’t answer you didn’t assume you were being ghosted and consider going NC with them! 🤣

Simpler times, I hate the modern world.

Thats an essay rather than one thing, sorry 😂

falalalalaaaaaaaa · 07/06/2025 03:51

Caramacs. I bloody loved caramacs.

FilthyforFirth · 07/06/2025 04:41

Fuse chocolate bars. Man I miss those.
