To agree with increasing tax and more benefit cuts to pay for defence

I was surprised to hear that Labour is to spend more on defence. We really do need to with the threats from Russia and run down of weapon stocks because they have been given to Ukraine. All of Europe needs to wake up. But I think they realise this.

Absolutely no point in spending a fortune defending a country where the citizens are dying due to extreme poverty.

I guess you could say misery loves company.

People defend a country because they are defending the way of life, their family, values, culture and freedom. I doubt the benefits system comes into it much.

I am on benefits. All this talk of cuts to benefits to fund defence - to me just says that I will be plunged into absolute poverty so the rich can be protected.

No one wants to defend a way of life that entails abject poverty and endless suffering. Its no coincidence that suicide rates are at their highest in 30 years and that's before any cuts mooted.

bombastix · 04/06/2025 21:51

I think some posters need to get reading history books. Britain has fought wars and it did, like other countries, cut its cloth to do so. This is not about rich people.

Anyway, with 3.5 percent now specifically demanded by Trump for NATO funding it’s no good pretending that things are the same as they were even five years ago. Cuts are coming.

I think this is the government's plan they know lots of people will kill themselves as they will have no choice and then it's less disabled people to deal with.

It's an awful thought but seeing the way we are headed I can't disagree sadly.

The UK armed forces currently have a recruitment crisis, young people simply aren't prepared to serve, this is despite a new advertising campaign and major changes to basic training. For example, shouting at recruits will no longer be allowed 🙄. But they still can't meet their targets, and retention is also in crisis.

They can spend as much as they like on defence, but if there aren't any soldiers or crew, then they may as well rely on the Scouts.

Other countries have either conscription, national service or amazing tech that gets recruits excited. We have an aircraft carrier that can't sail, helicopters that can't fly, about 37 tanks that actually work and submarines that require a pretty please from Trump before they can fire their missiles.

We don't have the money or the manpower to field an army in any global conflict.

And when people talk about defence it's good if others do it but not our children. Cyber warfare is the battleground now. Cheap drones can destroy aircraft so expensive ships etc are beginning to look redundant.

No it is not protecting only rich people. A strong defence is a deterrent and it protects the whole country.

Unless you are saying it is only rich people who don't want to speak Russian. Would you be happy to?

My benefits will be cut and I will be long dead before I am made to speak russian.

The moment they are granted asylum they can claim UC. How else would £1 billion per month be spent on them.

If they are given asylum, of course they can claim UC, same as anyone else...

Do you want them sleeping on the streets? no fixed addressed, no chance of getting work... Good plan!

Most migrants get jobs, any job and work, 82% of migrant men are in work, that compares to 78% of men born here....

Sorry you feel this way. I don't know how the benefits cuts will fall. My dd is on PIP. I accept she will lose it when it comes to renewing.

I believe the Ukraine war shows you need a conventional army as well as the modern fighting techniques such as drones and electronic warfare. It is also a hybrid war involving cyber and infrastructure attacks.

All this comes under defence. We need money for this.

hulahooper2 · 04/06/2025 22:16

Yes they should spend more on defence , but they need to increase tax for mega earners , and crackdown on tax evasion/avoidance , rather than increase tax for ‘normal’ earners .

Why do you think she will lose her PIP? It's just got out of hand. The money should be targeted to those who actually need it because their disability incurs costs such as equipment and carers. Not just because they need a bit of extra money.

That is not how PIP works. It is not about how you need money or spend it.
But you don't claim it so it is ok to be ignorant about it, and make silly statements.

It’s mainly the housing bill which is so high. People being put up in cheap hotels costing millions of pounds per week. If your accommodation provides your meals you get £9.95 a week to live on if they don’t it’s just under £50 a week. I think it used to be equivalent of 2/3 of JSA but unsure if it still is.

That is what they get whilst awaiting their assessment. If granted asylum they can then access full UC.

Asylum seekers cannot claim UC. They get £49.18 per week, or £9.95 per week if their accommodation provides meals.

Most of them are economic migrants. They justake up spurious reasons why they should be aloud to stay, they are gay, they are Christian their DC don't want to go back to country of origin because they can't get chicken nuggets there.

I think we've discussed this before. Your name sounds familiar on threads going on about benefits.

What happens often is that sickness and illness incapacitate people who can't work. PIP can help cover costs associated with this situation as well as bits that are needed tangibly such as medical equipment in the home etc. Not necessarily aids to enable work.

Without this, many in this position would not have enough to survive. There is no other suitable payment for incapacitation that removes working capacity.

You feel like a bit of a frother to me if I recall correctly.

Labour have made poor choices on policy and have little headroom left. They’ll have to deal with an increase without breaking pledges not to lift taxes again.

The mega earners are also the most mobile. We should crack down on all forms of tax evasion, including income in the form of cash in hand.

Don't tax you, don't tax me, tax the fella behind the tree.
