It is a bit weird. Why didn't he just stream it or wait for it to come out on Amazon/Netflix.

Because everything is better on a big screen.

Yeah but it is a bit weird

I’m very sorry, I honestly wasn’t doing it to be nasty, i’m really sorry it wasn’t my intention at all 😔

OP wasn’t looking for people to laugh , she thought it was strange ..
As a rule, unless like your son with autism it is strange ! !

ButterBites · 03/06/2025 00:02

What is going on with the really nasty and judgmental threads that keep coming up on MN??!

XenoBitch · 03/06/2025 00:03

BDG007 · 03/06/2025 00:01

Yeah but it is a bit weird

How?
It does not matter anyway. We could all do with more joy in our lives, and a man enjoying an afternoon at the flicks is doing just that. Leave him be.

BDG007 · 03/06/2025 00:08

I think most normal men would feel a bit uncomfortable going to see a kids film on their own. (I'm a man)

Why should he!

Good job not all men are as insecure as you then.

Littlebluecreature · 02/06/2025 23:40

EXACTLY this, thank you! I don’t understand Disney adults either

What's not to understand?
They are adults. Who love Disney.

Dangermoo · 03/06/2025 00:19

Nothing at all about being insecure, it's realising there are certain societal norms.

If a man went to a playground on his own because he liked going on the swings would you find that a bit strange?

I think calling people "normal" based on the films they like at the cinema is pretty judgemental ...

Most of the time I would agree but a grown man seeing a U rated film on his own is odd. It's worth of further investigation to see if he has a good reason for it.

Because everything is better on a big screen.

Yes the experience is so much better.

Best example I can give is Jurassic Park. Was so lucky to see it in the cinema when it was released in '93 and the moment when the dinosaurs first appeared is the most awe inspiring thing I've ever seen on screen. It needed to be seen in the cinema to fully capture the enormity of it. Plus the booming sound for each dinosaur step. It was the closest thing possible to being transported back 65 million years. You felt they were near you. As the first film to have CGI no-one had ever seen dinosaurs as realistic as this, like we were watching an Attenborough documentary on living animals. It was breathtaking, and you had to see it in the cinema. Seen it multiple times on television since and of course once you've seen it the surprise element isn't there, but nor is the size of screen to truly show off these massive animals or the sound to capture their movements and roars. The cinema gives you a totally different experience.

DefundthePolice · 03/06/2025 00:34

What if this man is intellectually disabled and likes watching children’s films? Very presumptuous and frankly an insult to assume he is there to perve on children or similar.

JFDIYOLO · 03/06/2025 00:37

When we went to see the first Wonder Woman film, there was a lone man sat there a few rows down.

During the trailers after the lights went down, there was a rustling and a flurry of movement.

He was changing into his WonderWoman costume.

OonaStubbs · 03/06/2025 00:38

Isn't there a Uc classification for films specifically for children and not for adults? Maybe unaccompanied adults could be banned from those but not for U films which appeal to children and adults alike?

That's a completely different scenario. Societal norms: a bloke going to the pics on his own is going against that? You're having a laugh.

BDG007 · 03/06/2025 00:38

How is it that loads of other threads on mumsnet are slagging men off for being perverts but when you see a grown man in a cinema on his own watching a kids film it's suddenly fine?

It's definitely not a societal norm for a grown man to go to the cinema on his own to watch a U rated film.

@BDG007

Could you clarify what in your view would be a good enough reason?
Who do you think should investigate ?

Who should he be reported to on suspicion of being in a cinema eating popcorn, on his own

JFDIYOLO · 03/06/2025 00:40

Maybe he's a separated dad whose ex is taking them to see it and he wanted to be able to talk about it with them next time he sees them.

Maybe he's a young adult who loved L&S as a kid.

If I were single I'd have gone to all the Paddingtons alone.

Personally I can't think of any good reason for a grown man to go to the cinema on their own to watch a U rated movie. If they're that desperate to see it they should stream it

Good luck with asking a random bloke why he's minding his own business watching a Disney film. With any luck, he's a black belt.
