Following on from the thread earlier this week on Over 50’s and what have you grown bored with (which was fabulous), thought I’d start this thread on simple pleasures (for over 45’s as I’m not yet 50).

For me:

Reading;
Cup of tea with a slice of homemade cake;
Long walk;
A freshly brewed coffee from the cafetière;
Clean sheets;
Favourite tv shows with a nice box of chocolates

Hit me with yours

Embroidery and cross stitching
Jigsaws
Baking
Gardening
Loose leaf tea
Bookshops/library
Early morning swim before work.

Both dc at Uni, I work FT over 3 days so have a lot of time to myself and I love this new life of just pottering, the freedom and not having to think what to cook for tea is bliss.

Can I ask if you're married or is part of the bliss being alone 😬

Listening to Stephen Fry read P G Wodehouse
Listening to Stephen Fry read Sherlock Holmes
Laying in a hot bath
Silence
Walking in the countryside
Tea and chocolate hob nobs
Learning Russian (badly)
Painting watercolours (even more badly)
Growing my own vegetables
Freshwater swimming
Eating out, especially Thai, Chinese and Indian food
Wine bars (pretentious, moi?)
Walking my dog and talking to other dog owners (dog lovers are always nice)
Setting myself reading projects (last year I read all of Jane Austen, and this year I am working my way through Thomas Hardy - next year it’s George Eliot).
Going for long walks while listening to audiobooks
Yoga
Meditation
Deep breathing (try it, it’s amazing)
Listening to the back catalogue of Radio 4 programmes like In Our time and A Good Read
Watching old boxsets like I Claudius and Brideshead Revisited

@CoffeeCantata where are you getting your lovely, luxury clothes from? I need some decent quality ones.

musicalfrog · 31/05/2025 21:22

Mine are:

Watching old tv shows and films I've never seen before (and ones that I have). I'm a huge nostalgic.

Sharing things I love with the dc.

Learning/ trying out new things

Jigsaw puzzles.

Running (or rather, the feeling of elation after a run!)

Kitty snuggles.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 31/05/2025 21:24

I like all the ones you’ve said but specifically at the moment, it’s sitting in the garden with a cup of tea and a book.

Going for a run is a big one for me.

I also love swimming, esp outside, as a pp has said.

I like walks by the sea or in the woods.

Kittkats · 31/05/2025 21:25

Can any open water swimmers recommend somewhere near Merseyside? I only swim on holiday… do I need a wetsuit?

Cel77 · 31/05/2025 22:08

Buying myself flowers.
Watching our puppy play in the garden.
Doing crafts.
Reading a good book.
A cup of strong black coffee in my prettiest cup by myself.
Writing a poem.
Putting nail varnish on.

Brewing tea at dawn, before anyone else is up, and sipping it while watching fox cubs playing in the garden.

Sitting on the garden swing with a freshly brewed coffee and DH, listening to birds singing as we discuss plans for the day.

Putting on music I loved when I was a teenager while I cook dinner

Walking in the hills behind our house, watching the seasons turn.

MrsJJ84 · 31/05/2025 22:38

41 here :
freshly brewed coffee before anyone is awake . Bonus points if it’s raining outside
cuddling my dogs
using nice moisturizer after a bath
being in bed early
walking on the beach
lighting a candle in a clean and tidy living room

taking time to do a proper skincare routine
having neag and tidy eyebrows and nails
