Following on from the thread earlier this week on Over 50’s and what have you grown bored with (which was fabulous), thought I’d start this thread on simple pleasures (for over 45’s as I’m not yet 50).

For me:

Reading;
Cup of tea with a slice of homemade cake;
Long walk;
A freshly brewed coffee from the cafetière;
Clean sheets;
Favourite tv shows with a nice box of chocolates

Hit me with yours

Stuff that I appreciate now but didn't before 40?

Birdwatching
Gardening
Cooking from scratch with local, high quality ingredients which actually does taste better most of the time.
Preschool children. Babies in general. I love them now but didn't before.
Wearing natural fibres.

All yours, OP!

And...

The seasons in the UK - especially spring.
Country walks
Singing in my choirs
Making a pretentious afternoon tea (tiny sandwiches, scones, small fancy cakes) to enjoy with my old mum-friends in the garden each summer. It's an in--joke that I try to become more poncey with each passing year!
Visiting anything Arts and Crafts - Kelmscott Manor etc etc
Gardens
I rise very early so I like to get on the PC and do all kinds of admin before anyone else gets up.
Buying lovely, quality clothes in luxury fabrics which will last me decades, or stuff from charity shops.
Painting.
Birds - especially waterfowl.
Writing a blog on my interests

Love this afternoon tea idea! I’ve just made scones for the first time (not tried them yet though!) and a sticky toffee pudding is cooking. Bloody love cake

Having both adult DD's home for the weekend with their partners and all being together. I love to sit back and watch my girls interact with one another and love that they are close. It gives me an immense amount of pleasure.

That first cup of coffee in the morning, curled up on the sofa with my dogs, before anyone else is up.

That first glass of wine on a 'wind down' Friday evening.

Walking on the beach with my DH and my dogs

My weekly lunch meet up in my local village coffee shop with my friends.

My fridge fully stocked after my supermarket delivery has arrived.

Sitting in my garden on a sunny day and feeling the warmth of the sun on my face.

Curling up in front of my blazing woodburner on a cold winters evening.

Watching Football or F1 on TV with my DH.

a fully stocked fridge - yes yes yes

and the wine one. I particularly love a glass of red with “have I got news for you” on a Friday night

Magazines, face masks, sitting in peace with the dog, just lying in bed, reading, playing board games with the kids

A cup of tea in the garden in the morning listening to the birds sing. This seems to be a common theme!

Pottering in the garden, particularly a morning or evening perambulation to check on everyone’s progress.

Picking herbs for cooking

Oil painting

Making jasmine or rose petal tea in my poncy Japanese cast iron tea pot and drinking from teeny cups

Watching F1 and PAOTY and LAOTY on Sky Arts

I only wish I had a dog but we travel too much and DH is dead against for lots of rational reasons.

I once had a sex dream about Tai. 😱

DungareesTrombonesDinos · 31/05/2025 15:29

Wax melts! Bring me absolute joy
Reading
Walking the dog
"Soothing" tv programmes like Canal Boat Diaries and Gone Fishing
Radio 4 comedy

Eyesopenwideawake · 31/05/2025 15:29

Has nobody mentioned masturbation? Or is that just for us over 60's?!

Superhansrantowindsor · 31/05/2025 15:36

Going for a walk on my own with a podcast on. Pottering in the garden- haven’t a clue what I’m doing but I find it relaxing. Radio 3 in the kitchen whilst I tidy up. I recently treated myself to new bed linen that cost way more than usual. It’s so lovely and soft. I also like sitting on the beach with a flask of something- if I can listen to Test Match Special at the same time it’s even better.

Superhansrantowindsor · 31/05/2025 15:38

Ryeman · 31/05/2025 14:14

Weirdly, I love pegging washing out on the line. Also sneaking into the garden when I’m meant to be working, just to see if there are any new blooms and pulling the odd weed.

This is my absolute favourite household chore! I sometimes get carried away and group items together so it looks nice on the line.

the80sweregreat · 31/05/2025 15:39

A decent cup of tea. Nice clean sheets.

PorgyandBess · 31/05/2025 15:40

Nice things. No scrimping. I’ve done my time.

The good wine, the excellent restaurant, the expensive clothes. Not flying in economy.

Marlaysydney12 · 31/05/2025 15:40

Taking our labrador to the dog park. Pure joy!
Sunny days and feeling the sun on my skin
Coffee by a beach
Lifting weights
Learning the flute

Pandasandelephants · 31/05/2025 15:41
  • walk in the woods with a bit of bird watching
  • hot bath
  • coffee with some choc
  • a cold beer or a glass of wine
AmyDuPlantier · 31/05/2025 15:43

Driving with the music loud and drumming on the steering wheel.
Going to car meets on a Sunday morning while everyone at home is still asleep.
Coffee in the garden alone in the mornings.
Long shower with loud sad girl music on.

Ahaha oh yeah there’s always that. Working from home is boring but has its benefits.

bigbreakfastclub · 31/05/2025 15:44

Walking around the lakes in Norway surrounded by huge trees when there’s nobody around it’s surreal. Can only enjoy this when visiting my son.

EmpressaurusKitty · 31/05/2025 15:46

My cat
Finding books in the local charity shops that I loved years ago & had forgotten about
Realising I can lift heavier weights than I could last week
Time with friends & family
Long walks
Coffee in the sun

SabreIsMyFave · 31/05/2025 15:50

Feeding the birds that come to my garden. (And watching them feed.)

Feeding the hedgehogs that come to my garden! (And watching them feed.)

Sitting in the sunshine with my cat lying next to me, purring away.

Going for long walks in the fields, by the canal and the river, and in the woodlands.

Sunset walks.

Looking at the stars at night (and the planets) through my telescope.

Meeting up with my 2 adult DC for coffee/pub lunch/a trip to the theatre.

Going to the beach, or the lakes. (Or to a forest.)

Picnics/day trips.

Taking photographs of beautiful things.

Dancing around like no-one's watching, with my music playing on my MP3 player. (Usually in the kitchen when I'm doing our evening dinner!)

Thunderstorms.

Tootling around my lovely, flower-filled garden, and tending to it!

Getting into a bed that has clean bed linen.

(Probably some more, but those are most of them!) Smile

LondonJax · 31/05/2025 15:59

Waking up during the holidays (I work in a school), realising I don't have to get up and going back to sleep for an hour (or so...)

Fresh bed linen

Sitting in the garden watching the clouds for a while before starting dinner on a summer's evening

Chips...with loads of salt and vinegar...walking along the seafront (doesn't matter what time of year!)

Our annual trip to the panto - it's become part of our family's Christmas and I'd happily cut back on anything else at Christmas rather than miss it.

A visit to the British Museum. DS and I love it there and we're always discovering something we hadn't seen before. The free tours are brilliant.

Meeting friends for a quick coffee that goes on for the whole morning and into the afternoon.

Reading in bed, especially in the winter all wrapped up.

Long walks in the winter then coming home to a warm house and, if it's wet, changing into warm dry clothes.

And a lot of those are the reasons why I'm taking early retirement next year. Time to stop clock watching, rushing to meetings and fitting in the things I enjoy around the things I have to do.

DelboytrottersDnecklace · 31/05/2025 16:00

I love a quiet day at home (I hate leaving the house) with a programme on the tv and working on my cross stitch
Bonus points if I'm alone
A good cup of tea
Hanging the washing on the line-bonus if it dries
Feeding (and then watching) the birds
A salad meal deal from tesco

If I do have to go out,a mooch round the charity shops and a trip to a cafe
A good meal in a nice pub
Going to the beach and watching the waves

Needhelp101 · 31/05/2025 16:08

Definitely reading in bed with rain pattering on the window.

It used to be watching my guinea pigs living their best lives munching grass before a bastard fox killed them 😞

Mood killer, sorry! Watching a new series with my teenage son where he actually wants to watch it with me.

AlexDrake1981 · 31/05/2025 16:09

For me it’s:

My morning coffee whilst stroking the pet cat before everyone else gets up.

A fully stocked fridge.

The feeling of content after a good clean/tidy.

Going home after my run of shifts, knowing I’ve got a few days off.

Flicking through the tv channels and seeing a program I really like, then watching it.

Lindy2 · 31/05/2025 16:13

My morning coffee sitting in my garden listening to the birds singing. I like to do this alone although it's ok if my cat joins me.

A long bath with nice scented bubbles, a good book to read and a glass of wine.

ACynicalDad · 31/05/2025 16:18

Tea, gardening, parkrun, work (tragic but love my job).
