To not sit in the back so kids can sit in the front?

Disagreement with DH tonight. So would you sit in the back so your kids (say under 18, as I can maybe see the argument for over 18) can sit in the front of the car?

YABU - Yes, it’s normal to take turns for who sits in the front passenger seat
YANBU - No, adults in the front, children in the back.

Are they your dsc who he wants up front?

LegoAirlines · 31/05/2025 08:04

I sit in the back as DD is horrifically car sick in the back. But without that kind of reasoning, YANBU.

Mightyhike · 31/05/2025 08:04

Does DH ever sit in the back?

Olderbeforemytime · 31/05/2025 08:05

It’s safest for the lightest people to be in back.

Stripeyanddotty · 31/05/2025 08:05

@Mightyhike
Depends on whether the op ever drives really ?

BogRollBOGOF · 31/05/2025 08:05

Unless there's a factor such as travel sickness, adults default to the front.

I did my 18 years in the back. If there are multiple adults, I tend to end up in the back as I'm usually the smallest adult.

TreesOfGreen99 · 31/05/2025 08:06

Depends! Once my DC were significantly taller and with longer legs than me, then we would generally take turns.

crumpet · 31/05/2025 08:07

You could drive and he could sit in the back if he’s so keen to give the children an opportunity to sit in the front.

CagneyNYPD1 · 31/05/2025 08:08

Depends. If I’m being dropped off (station, shopping etc) and my DH and DC are continuing on a longer journey, then I will sit in the back. That way, I can quickly jump out and teenage dc and DH can chat properly.

Otherwise, it’s me in the front.

EdisinBurgh · 31/05/2025 08:08

Absolutely not! As well as being more of a comfortable seat and so should go to the eldest passenger, it’s a respect and possibly also a hierarchy thing.

Kids can go in the front when it’s their car.

If my adult children get the passenger seat leaving me on the back seat, I would probably feel prematurely aged, like they’re taking me to a care home.

Maray1967 · 31/05/2025 08:08

DS 17 is taller than me and has occasionally felt sick in the back (from childhood). I always sit in the back- I’m fine with that.

heavenisaplaceonearth · 31/05/2025 08:09

Does he ever sit in the back?

Valeriekat · 31/05/2025 08:10

My tall adult sons always sit in the back.

TakingHavenInTescoExpress · 31/05/2025 08:15

Grown-ups get the front seat, that has been the rule since cars existed.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 31/05/2025 08:16

Nope. If I’m in my parents’ car, it’s almost always my dad driving (my mum hates driving), I will sit in the back.

If it’s mine or DH’s car, I usually drive. The adult gets the front seat, either DH or DM if we’re taking her somewhere.

MIL would often relegate herself to the back when her DC were teenagers because she was quite a bit shorter than two of them. Personally, I still know I would have been shoved in the back by my DM even if I was taller than her.

Exactly this. By all means relegate her to the back but you'll be wiping vomit out if your hair in about ten minutes when she throws up on you.

MargaretThursday · 31/05/2025 08:19

I sometimes sit in the back so dd1, who has bad back pain can sit in the front on long journeys.
To make it fair, sometimes, but less often I do the same for the others. It doesn't bother me.

curlygirlietwirly · 31/05/2025 08:22

If my husband is driving us all somewhere short distance, I’ll sit in the front. If it’s a long distance, I’ll sit in the back with the baby and my eldest will sit in the front.
If I’m not in the car, eldest sits in the front

ClearHoldBuild · 31/05/2025 08:24

My DC are 26 and 24 and both are taller than me and they wouldn’t even think to take the front seat if I was travelling in the car too. I would only get in the back if I was a passenger in someone else’s car.
I used to get car sick as a child but I was always in the back and mum and dad were in the front.

Endofyear · 31/05/2025 08:27

Yes if children get carsick. Or tall, long legged teenager on a long journey, I'd probably sit in the back.

vivainsomnia · 31/05/2025 08:32

Depends on the context. If it's when they are picked up from their resident parent and SM insists on coming too when it's not needed, that's not so unreasonable. If it is to go out for a family outing, then it's unreasonable.

FeralWoman · 31/05/2025 08:33

Adults/parents in the front unless there’s a really good reason for a child/young adult child to be in the front, like carsickness or long legs.

I’d probably add the exception of having a teenager in the front in the few months prior to them getting their licence so they can observe the traffic more closely and have the driver talk to them about driving and traffic.

That was my first thought too 😂

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 31/05/2025 08:36

Adults sit in the front.

Another one who immediately thought of DSC, I recognise this battle.

BeachLife2 · 31/05/2025 08:36

It's a seat in a car- really not worth getting upset about.

Some people really over think things. Utter twaddle is is to do with respect and 'hierarchy'.
