Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

1000 replies

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

People are pathetic.
Tribal. Closed minded.

You’re right to watch a variety of news sources. You’re right to want to have your opinions challenged and see the other side of the coin. People who don’t, won’t and can’t do this are the problem.

Allthebestgone · 31/05/2025 07:18

Really? It’s not Far Right, it’s mostly just Pro British, and Im Irish and proud to live in this country and the opportunities it has provided over my life. Ive paid a ton of tax over my lifetime and been happy to do so, but not for all the tens of thousands of chancers illegally entering the country, mostly men from countries that have illiberal/misogonistic/patrichal/women hating societies that have totally different values to those we have in the West.

Duckbi11 · 31/05/2025 07:07

Well they’re not are they if they’re choosing to view , support and fund a channel spewing hate , homophobia, misogyny….

And yet here we all are on hate-spewing den of phobias Mumsnet.

Thanks for all the laugh reactions @StarDolphins

One would almost think that you actually agree with me.

No BIWI, many of us are laughing at you, not agreeing with you.

I don't discuss politics at work, so would neither have said what news channels I watch myself nor commented on others' choices. I think I probably would be surprised if any of my colleagues admitted they watched GB News, to be honest. I just wouldn't say anything, unless they repeated any of the vile, prejudiced things from there, or behaved in a way that suggested they were racist, sexist, etc.

I have had to speak to direct reports previously about keeping their personal/religious/political beliefs from influencing how they do their job or treat others (healthcare). But I have to have some evidence that they are indeed doing that, and that would have to be more substantive than they said they watch x channel or read y paper.

Which news outlets can we access that don’t include or tolerate any misogyny?

In most lines of work supporting misogyny and homophobia would be a serious concern so yes I’d be surprised anybody admitted to supporting GB News and would be monitoring it.

People don't want to watch the news. They want to watch a series of opinions that mirrors their own and reinforces their own smug perception of themselves.

GB News devotees and BBC-worshippers are just two cheeks of the same arse

This is true most people consume that which is an echo chamber of their own beliefs.

Toptotoe · 31/05/2025 07:24

I rarely watch the news but if I do, I tend to watch Al Jazeera.
I do think it is very judgey for him to say that comment to you.
GB news is more right wing in its approach than other channels but it’s important to have a balance.
I say it’s his issue - you watch what you want - it’s your life and you are not doing anyone any harm.

I think the problem is that OP doesn't seem to acknowledge what GB is. She says she 'doesn't mind' watching it if there's nothing else to watch, which suggests mindless scrolling and no critical thinking. That's not showing original thought, curiosity or open-mindedness.

TankFlyBossW4lk · 31/05/2025 07:26

I'm sorry if it upset you, but GB news is a right wing biased entertainment channel as far as I'm concerned.

But it's interesting, would you have said , "Nigel Farage is wonderful," or "Look at that Mr Trump, what a marvel" or "Just popping out for my Daily Mail." All these things might single you at as, "One of those. "

I agree with the poster who said I think it was a compliment that they thought you weren't like that.

Etaerio · 31/05/2025 07:28

stargirl1701 · 30/05/2025 22:28

It’s necessary. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. Find a reputable news source, OP. In fact, find more than one. I read The Guardian and The Times. The truth is usually in the middle of those!

The Guardian! 😂

Duckbi11 · 31/05/2025 07:20

Homophobia and misogyny aren’t pro British.

So why does it attract so many gay people onto the channel if it’s so homophobic, even the main breakfast presenter is gay . Why is Michelle Dewberry and others always calling out misogyny. It’s the only channel I’ve ever seen call out societal problems . It’s the only show to call out the injustice of the grooming gangs , the waspi women , the post office scandal. So many important injustices , the leasehold scandal being another. As far as I’m aware these causes aren’t homophobic , misogynist or racisf . Get a grip with your ill informed old tropes or provide evidence to the contrary .

60sbird · 31/05/2025 07:30

I would have said “oh, you like to listen to the truth about everyday news too” it isn’t racism it’s truth that the other channels are too scared to say

So?
Can you hear how you sound?

Another woman is watching something you don’t like so therefore she’s worthy of vile insults?

You know, every generation in human history has had a specific group of people whom a majority deem it acceptable to abuse, ostracise and humiliate. You are just perpetuating that behaviour.

Good point!

@LillyPJ have you ever watched GBNews?

PermanentTemporary · 31/05/2025 07:36

Interesting that people are saying GB News is a news channel on which they watch news. GB News doesn't refer to itself as a news channel, so that it doesn't have to conform to the regulatory requirements that we have agreed for news that aims to be factual in this country. It's an opinion and entertainment channel. But it calls itself GB News. Because it aims to mislead. Clearly very successfully.

TheAutumnCrow · 31/05/2025 07:36

Duckbi11 · 31/05/2025 07:16

You’ve gone from the guardian and BBC to GB news- yeah we believe you.😂

Have you seen the biased crap the BBC and Guardian promote in their Stonewalled determination to misconstrue biological reality and enable an ideology that undermines children’s safeguarding?

hattie43 · 31/05/2025 07:39

Do you know what’s hilarious , all these lefties have bent over backwards to spew liberalism look after the ‘ vulnerables ‘ and now these people are all voting Reform. They don’t want labours ideologies and lies . The very people labour historically have championed now want them out .

Nominative · 31/05/2025 07:40

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:33

Blimey, I must say I didn’t realise it has something of a reputation! I only watch it once in a while if struggling for something else to watch, and I find Nigel entertaining on occasion too when he gets on his high horse!

You watch it and you haven't noticed that it's right wing and biased?
