Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

Is the OP saying that she never watches the news, but when there’s nothing else on tv she’ll watch gb news?
that’s even more painful than always watching gb news!

stargirl1701 · 30/05/2025 22:28

It’s necessary. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. Find a reputable news source, OP. In fact, find more than one. I read The Guardian and The Times. The truth is usually in the middle of those!

This. Sorry but I would judge you aswell!

We need a reading group for all the GB News/Morning Star readers. I thought I was the only one.

There's always someone else doing something, I've found that out as I've got older. Makes it feel less lonely, and it's fun to find kindred spirits. 😊

I think most people dislike misogyny and homophobia so MN is no different to the majority on the internet.

There is a reason GB News is targeted by Don’t Fund Hate

Do you mean the Stop Funding Hate that likened MN to Breitbart and joined a successful push to have MN advertisers pull funding?

You obviously haven't seen Michelle Dewberry take down a TRA - excellent.

Love Michelle Dewberry and Nana Akua. I watch and read clips from lots of different media sources and I’d rather watch clips from these two than read anything from the Guardian, that continues to post shite from Owen Jones.

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:33

Blimey, I must say I didn’t realise it has something of a reputation! I only watch it once in a while if struggling for something else to watch, and I find Nigel entertaining on occasion too when he gets on his high horse!

I’d be really disappointed that anyone I knew and liked could find Nigel F entertaining

Guinessandafire · 31/05/2025 06:46

I voted YANBU, even though I wouldn't want to know or associate with anyone that watches that disgraceful 'news' channel

Antivax

However, that is your choice to watch it. If you do, it tells me all I need to know about you as a person.

That's sounds like my parents... Who only got the Daily Mail for the crossword... Two years later their politics had changed completely and not for the good 😩

In my twenties, I used to buy the Daily Mail every day for the crossword. I had to stop buying it when I realised its bias. It was a shame - that crossword got me through an extremely boring job!

I mean the Stop Fund Hate who along with Ofcom have pulled them up on their misogyny and homophobia. There is compilation of some
of the many extreme misogynistic comments on the channel and it’s quite shocking.

So in answer to the op YABVU

SleepQuest33 · 31/05/2025 06:53

Well, that fact OP, says a lot about you. You’re colleague was being too honest.

GeneralPeter · 31/05/2025 06:12

I looked up MB/FC to see what would score the dreaded 8.

This is the score for Transgender Trend, a leftish gender critical source:

Reasoning: Propaganda, Pseudoscience, Poor Sourcing, False Claims, Hate
Bias Rating: RIGHT (8.2)
Factual Reporting: LOW (7.6)

“socially conservative talking points. We rate it Low for factual reporting due to its reliance on cherry-picked sources, misleading interpretations of research, and promotion of dehumanizing stereotypes. Content often directly contradicts the scientific consensus.”

https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/transgender-trend-bias-and-credibility/

This tells me (again) that there’s no substitute for staying open to different perspectives and making your own mind up.

Edited

Whether you agree with them or not, TT is a pressure group (so it naturally is selective in information it publishes), and a single-issue one (where that issue is more associated with socially-conservative views). Of course they are going to score high for bias, and to the right.

Personally, I don't like the same level of bias in general news organizations (but I do acknowledge that's a value judgment).

StMarie4me · 30/05/2025 23:13

GB News radicalises people into far right, racist, misogynistic views. Your colleagues were calling you out on that. Rightly so.

No, it really doesn’t. The vast majority of even vaguely intelligent people are capable of critical thinking. 🙄

TheAutumnCrow · 31/05/2025 06:57

echt · 31/05/2025 06:19

MN is really the wrong place to ask this. This is the most politically undiverse and narrow minded place on the internet!

Hyperbole much?

Ten thousand times so!

spoonbillstretford · 31/05/2025 07:00

People call it GBeebies for a reason.

LlynTegid · 31/05/2025 07:00

I might have used different words but agree with the sentiment and do not consider it rude.

GB News should be called GB Views, as it is a programme about news stories, not a news programme. Whilst I dislike the Daily Mail, I think it unfair to compare it with GB News as it is positively moderate and balanced by comparison.

LlynTegid · 31/05/2025 07:01

spoonbillstretford · 31/05/2025 07:00

Understandable though unkind to children.

Well they’re not are they if they’re choosing to view , support and fund a channel spewing hate , homophobia, misogyny….

Nobody is a Daily Mail reader now that you have to pay

You've always had to pay for over a century

GeneralPeter · 31/05/2025 07:12

@QurikySparrowHatrack I agree the appropriate standard for a pressure group is different from a news site.

(I’m not certain that a pressure group is intrinsically biased though).

But TT is critical of gender norms and comes from a feminist perspective, not a conservative one. Yet it was rated at the extreme end of Right by that site.

That suggests to me that they don’t do their homework.

Spiked is another (odd) example. Founded by the staff of Living Marxist but now home to left and right libertarian and unorthodox opinion. It just got a straightforward Right rating, with no mention of its far left heritage anywhere in the write up.

For a site set up to analyse a full spectrum of the media, it doesn’t seem to handle the non-mainstream very well.

hattie43 · 31/05/2025 07:13

Duckbi11 · 31/05/2025 07:07

Allthebestgone · 31/05/2025 07:14

Im ashamed to say I might have said this 18 months ago, like most people I Ive been brainwashed by mainstream media. GB News is not perfect, but they do address a lot of issues that mainstream media will not touch. And watching GB news has opened my eyes to how BIASED the BBC is, so much so that I cancelled my licence. And I had been a long term Guardian reader and they went the way of the BBC a long time ago, their journalists are full on Social Justice Warriors. The more I watch GB news the more obvious the bias becomes. Just look at how we all behaved in lockdown, its becoming like Brave New World/1984.

Yes. Me too.
