Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

Plenty of evidence out there as you well know.

So why are you not sharing it then ? Because you know it’s not true you’re just a brainwashed left winger , all talk no substance .

I think the problem is that OP doesn't seem to acknowledge what GB is. She says she 'doesn't mind' watching it if there's nothing else to watch, which suggests mindless scrolling and no critical thinking. That's not showing original thought, curiosity or open-mindedness.

I disagree. This reminds me of China and the USSR where party elites were permitted to read the foreign press, because they were Good People who could be trusted to read it sorrowfully while having the Right Thoughts. Not like the masses who might think anything and were slightly unpredictable.

Do you know what’s hilarious , all these lefties have bent over backwards to spew liberalism look after the ‘ vulnerables ‘ and now these people are all voting Reform. They don’t want labours ideologies and lies . The very people labour historically have championed now want them out .

Would you care to rewrite that in English?

Floatlikeafeather2 · 31/05/2025 07:41

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:33

Blimey, I must say I didn’t realise it has something of a reputation! I only watch it once in a while if struggling for something else to watch, and I find Nigel entertaining on occasion too when he gets on his high horse!

And this is how Farage and his ilk operate - they concentrate their efforts on the absolutely clueless and the dregs. I find it hard to believe, though, that anyone can be this unaware of what's going on in their own country so I'm inclined to believe that this is a wind up. It's a very lame attempt, OP.

'All these lefties' 'all voting Reform'? Maybe you're generalising a bit too much...

Political opinion aside, if a colleague of mine, in my profession, said they 'enjoyed a bit of GB News occasionally' I'd
a) assume they meant as part of a consciously selected, broad and 'balanced' diet of news consumption and were being a tad facetious and confrontational about it,
or b) be concerned at their apparent lack of comprehension that GB News is perceived as problematic and therefore question their capacity for critical thinking and analysis, and the simple skill of 'reading the room'. This would be compounded if, in addition, my perception was that GB News was the only News source they accessed, or that 'occasionally' was indicative of how frequently they engaged with any news or current affairs.
This would be a serious concern for me, working together.

It's a right wing news channel, majority on mumsnet are left hence your responses! Yes they were rude and ignorant.

LillyPJ · 31/05/2025 07:44

@PermanentTemporary Yes! It's a bit like Donald Trump calling his SM thing 'Truth Social'.

SapphireSeptember · 31/05/2025 07:45

@hattie43 I'm a lefty. It'll be a cold day in hell before I ever vote reform. Also, what do you mean by 'vulnerables'?

TeenagersAngst · 31/05/2025 07:45

Have any of the GB News critics on here watched the channel on a relatively regular basis or are you just basing your criticism on other people’s critique of it?

They most definitely do have a right wing editorial slant just as the Guardian clearly has a left wing editorial slant. But every show I’ve watched on GB News has guests from left and right- some very left wing.

Therefore, I don’t see how you can accuse it of being a propaganda channel spewing hate and misogyny. Even if the presenters are right wing, there is always an excellent selection of guests representing the opposite ‘side’. Something the BBC repeatedly fails to do, hence accusations it is biased.

LillyPJ · 31/05/2025 07:46

Etaerio · 31/05/2025 07:33

But you're just parroting what other people have told you to believe. You're not thinking for yourself.

Well - that's certainly an 'original thought'.

AnonymousBleep · 31/05/2025 07:46

It’s the breeziness of not really being aware you’re watching a cesspit of reactionary right wing talking points that worries me. Oh god. We’re going to end up with PM Nigel (and a smoking ruin of a country) aren’t we…?

"Problematic"! Let me guess, do you work in an academic environment with an expectation that everyone subscribes to the same standard empty-headed leftish prejudices and bigotries? Do you ever think for yourself?

Not the dregs, the majority. Google it.

Did he offer up which news sites he trusted and watched?

CrazyGoatLady · 31/05/2025 07:51

Duckbi11 · 31/05/2025 07:23

In most lines of work supporting misogyny and homophobia would be a serious concern so yes I’d be surprised anybody admitted to supporting GB News and would be monitoring it.

Yes, I might well have a slightly closer eye on that person in future. But I also can't control what people consume outside of work, nor would it be reasonable to try to do so.

I have found that younger clinicians whose beliefs align with the modern left are the most problematic to manage in terms of being judgemental and keeping their beliefs out of work, incidentally. I work in clinical education and training, and the number of them who say things like they wouldn't want to work with a patient who voted Tory is quite significant.

TENSsion · 31/05/2025 07:51

LillyPJ · 31/05/2025 07:40

What 'vile insult'?!

Just a few leveled at OP because she dared to watch an “unapproved” tv show:

Do you engage your brain
old gammons
overt racists
Nazi
Hateful
tin foil hat brigade
disgusting

You guessed all that from the use of one word? You must be a genius (as well as, according to you, the only person here capable of independent thought). I've had enough of your arrogance.

You're going to monitor someone in work because they sometimes watch GB News? 😂

So I was right. And I've never claimed to be the only person here capable of independent thought. It sounds like you've panicked after being challenged on something you expected everyone to agree with without thinking about it. As you did.

This happens in the lefty mind. I let loose I voted tories a few years ago and the women turned nasty. One even said she'd like to pick tory voters off 1 by 1. Irony that Labour has turned out more right wing than tory in their actions!!

luckylavender · 31/05/2025 07:57

It’s what people think

wastingtimeonhere · 31/05/2025 08:00

I love the 'workplace suicide' comments, I have to keep quiet that I watch 'mainstream', and have middle of the road opinions.
GB, alternative, extreme and conspiracy is the norm amongst colleagues and customers where I am. Look at any fb post about anything political and there are far more GB style comments than 'reasonable' opinions. I come on MN to remind myself it's not everyone! 😆

Abhannmor · 31/05/2025 08:00

One of my sisters has it on always - unless she's watching a film. I watched it for an hour or so. The same footage used over and over. A voice over every 15 minutes saying ' Nigel Farage is on your side...'. Right wing journalists interviewing each other. OK, free speech and all that fair enough. But it is not a News station. One glimmer of hope was the fact my nephew sees through it. He calls it GBH.
