Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

1000 replies

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

Nope. That was a point about the whole conspiracy theory that the MSM is concealing ‘truth’ from the rest of us.

To say that never happens is simplistic too though.

Some current and recent examples:

  1. Widespread attribution of men’s crimes to women, in the UK media. Ongoing.

  2. Refusal to cover the Hunter Biden laptop story by mainstream outlets in the US. Ditto under-coverage of Biden’s cognitive decline (probably gave us Trump)

  3. Reporting that face masks are ineffective against Covid unless professionally fitted, until supply problems were fixed.

  4. Super-injunctions and the D-notice system.

  5. Code of silence about abusive celebrities, until the dam breaks. Saville, Brand, Diddy.

LillyPJ · 31/05/2025 05:53

I've seen bits of GB news as I'm scrolling through so you could say that I've 'watched ' it. I would NEVER say that I 'don't mind it' though! Why do you think the comment was rude? Do you understand what they meant by it? Do you discuss politics or current events at work?

claudiine · 30/05/2025 22:49

What’s GB news all about?

Right wing guff.

genesis92 · 31/05/2025 05:54

MN is really the wrong place to ask this. This is the most politically undiverse and narrow minded place on the internet!

it was a rude comment, some people are just very judgemental though

I watch GB News, Sky, Channel 4 News, Al Jazeera, Global - even the BBC. It's interesting, and educational to get a perspective on all aspects of political spectrum. Likewise, I read both the Guardian and the Telegraph. But I'm an ex-press officer so intrigued by how a story is played out in different media.

I agree (although GB News is hard to swallow, as are some American news channels). I thought it was a shame (though understandable) when we stopped being able to see RT news here; I'd have been interested to know what the Russians were being told about Ukraine.

Far better to ask on X

The Daily Mail, FWIW, also covers some stories well and has won news awards for doing so.

I didn't know this.

MSM do decide what to print or not, depending on whether they think it’s in the public interest, supposedly, more to do with owners political interests.

edwina curry affair with former PM was widely known at the time, but the MSM collectively decided not to spill the beans

I didn't know this.

The Daily Mail named the murderers of Stephen Lawrence.

It’s necessary. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. Find a reputable news source, OP. In fact, find more than one. I read The Guardian and The Times. The truth is usually in the middle of those!

the truth is certainly not in the guardian!

Watch what you want, do you care if other people judge you?

Ive got a WW2 poster on the hallway wall with Hitler in it, has raised a few eyebrows when people have come to the door.

🤣

Just how ‘ Right’ can it be when it’s regulated by Ofcom just like all the other channels. All this rhetoric above is just panic and misinformation talking about people being brainwashed etc. it just gives common sense a home .

Absolutely!

According to MB/FC, GB News (the TV Station) scores:

"Mixed" for its factualness, and
"Right" for bias (though, with a score of 7.9 out of 10, it falls just short of the 8.0 threshold for "Extreme Right"

It's the only UK TV News show that scores a "Low Credibility".

It's website tends to score a little (but not much) better.

I looked up MB/FC to see what would score the dreaded 8.

This is the score for Transgender Trend, a leftish gender critical source:

Reasoning: Propaganda, Pseudoscience, Poor Sourcing, False Claims, Hate
Bias Rating: RIGHT (8.2)
Factual Reporting: LOW (7.6)

“socially conservative talking points. We rate it Low for factual reporting due to its reliance on cherry-picked sources, misleading interpretations of research, and promotion of dehumanizing stereotypes. Content often directly contradicts the scientific consensus.”

https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/transgender-trend-bias-and-credibility/

This tells me (again) that there’s no substitute for staying open to different perspectives and making your own mind up.

Transgender Trend - Bias and Credibility

QUESTIONABLE SOURCE A questionable source exhibits one or more of the following: extreme bias, consistent promotion of propaganda/conspiracies, poor or no

StuckUpPrincess · 31/05/2025 06:14

In today's world, I don't think I'd admit to where I get my news from because everyone is so judgy. If asked, I'd just say something like "Oh, I look at a range of outlets - I like to see the different spins they put on things."

We shouldn't live in a society where people think they immediately know your entire personality from whether you read the DM or the Guardian, but we do.

TheAutumnCrow · 31/05/2025 06:15

So many media organisations got Stonewalled post-2026. GB News and the Morning Star didn’t.

I find it fascinating.

Peace & Socialism ✌️

Hyperbole much?

Toootss · 31/05/2025 06:21

I watch piers morgan sometimes quite like how he has opposing factions on his show. I listen to The rest is politics - good explanations of things but from the view of very privileged white men. BBC - well trans women were def women on there. Used to get the Times but couldn’t bear the sexist comments -very privileged posters there. GBNews - sometimes like to hear what they’re claiming. Al Jazeera better coverage of ME. BBC World Service -v good in my view of a broader picture away from local politics.

Best to get a range of views imv.

MaidOfSteel · 31/05/2025 06:21

I’m really starting to fucking hate this place for the way people gleefully sneer at & look down on those whose political opinions don’t align with theirs, even at first glance and with little or no evidence.

Yes. I think it’s because they don’t crave centrist respectability, and have a group politics of their own.

Which, ironically, makes them essential sources for centrists who want to make their own mind up and avoid groupthink.

SapphireSeptember · 31/05/2025 06:29

My mate was on GB news a while ago, so I watched it then. I also find them good for talking to people like KJK. So yes, I watch those interviews. I also read The Guardian and The Morning Star. Make of that what you will. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think most people dislike misogyny and homophobia so MN is no different to the majority on the internet.

There is a reason GB News is targeted by Don’t Fund Hate

We need a reading group for all the GB News/Morning Star readers. I thought I was the only one.
