Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

I would expect more clear written communication and punctuation from a “senior lecturer” … your illustration in above comment is weak.

Perhaps you just lecture older folks …

Do old people like bad grammar?

MammaTo · 31/05/2025 18:18

I’d of 100% changed my opinion of you

Ironically, your dislike of having alternative political views expressed is very characteristic of actual fascism. Is expressing concern about NHS waiting times as part of a wider argument about the level of migration 'fascist' in your mind? I'm interested in how far you go with this.

False claims for the purposes of demonising immigrants, yes.

You can think of the framing of a news story in terms of what's in the frame (the facts, opinions and quotes that are included in the article) and as what the frame itself is like (the language and context within the news outlet)
So say there's a piece of news - a report has been published showing that people between 18 and 25 are more likely to be out of work or education due to mental ill health than people aged 40 -67 let's say.
You might get somewhere like the economist reporting on this with a headline like 'Young people's mental health crisis costs the economy £100 million pounds a year' and they might get quotes from academic or political economists or policy makers.
The same story might be covered in the Mail with a headline like 'Generation Sick note - young people increasingly blame mental ill health for days off, but critics question if it's all just snowflakery' - which gives a (hateful in my opinion) human interest angle which appeals to the presumed prejudices of it's readership. They might get quotes from pundits who have commented on 'snowflakery' before.
GB news tends to cover stories in a way that undermines traditional political parties and established science in favour of 'disrupters' like Reform. It can do this by selecting stories images and quotes which give an overall picture of terrible chaos in the status quo and sensible sounding commentary from it's preferred politicians.
A good thing to do when you are looking at news sources is to understand their funding model. If someone is taking a financial hit to keep a news outlet afloat they're usually making a long term between on something else they want (think of Elon Musk and X for example)

@dexra fringe as in the edge of what is currently acceptable to broadcast.

Edited

Yes but the flip side is other media will use similar tactics to reinforce different political positions and that includes funding sources.

False claims for the purposes of demonising immigrants, yes.

How about claims which don't demonise immigrants but are used to support arguments for lower migration? And does it make a difference, in your mind, whether the claims are true or false in whether they qualify as fascism?

I rather suspect we’d have different views about what constitutes demonising immigrants. We’d also have different views about what constitutes truth. But then I suspect id have a different version of the truth than almost anyone who claims a right wing entertainment channel is some sort of balanced news channel.

But no need to be bitchey or judgemental because someone has opposing political views??!! It's so childish. All my best friends have different political views to me, i think that is normal and healthy, we manage to have debates without getting nasty, unlike mumsnet!! But....I've said it before, it would be boring if we all agreed!!

Democracy is frowned upon here I guess.

By 'true' I mean 'corresponding to reality'. What do you mean by the word? And why are you dodging the questions? Have you realised you're on shaky ground?

PlanetJanette · 31/05/2025 18:53

Since when has democracy required anyone to hold in esteem people with values you disagree with or find abhorrent.

Democracy means that people get to vote for the guy who wanted to kill the RNLI because they helped save migrants lives if they want to. It doesn’t mean I have to like those people or think they are in any way decent human beings.

Oh shut up. Have you ever watched it?? It’s none of that at all!

I watch it. It's all those things.

@Conkersinautumn, give it a go. Since Reform's recent success in the elections GB News has had to be a bit more careful with hilarious consequences. You can practically hear the production staff yelling at the presenters. You can definitely see the look on their poor wee confused faces as they struggle with what they say next.😂

Sometimes their contempt for the UK gets a bit much though so small doses are recommended.

GBeebies are the ultimate in dog whistle reporting and so often breach Ofcom regulations, an absolute toilet of a broadcaster. The only place Farage belongs.

You’ll be crying your eyes out when Reform wins the next General Election then. Which they are widely expected to do.

Expected by who? I don’t expect them to win anything in four years time when they’ve fucked up all the councils they’ve just taken over.

StripyShirt · 31/05/2025 19:18

BeUmberPombear · 31/05/2025 14:20

Gb news is the home of islamophobia, racism and bigotry. If I found one of my employees watching it, I'd fire them on the spot.

I remember a few years ago a staff member was accused of being a daily fail reader. I'm a firm believer in innocent till proven guilty but kept an eye on the person in the staffroom etc. As there was no evidence, we knew where he shopped enroute to work for snacks etc so questioned the shopkeeper. Along with his sandwiches ( meat which is another issue but not a red line) we found out his paper each morning was the daily fail. Needless to say he isn't working for us any longer. The sooner bigots are exposed the better for all of us and am proud to play a part in doing so. 👏

Are you real?

As a thought experiment, try replacing 'bigot' with 'witch'. You will hopefully find it illuminating.....

I think they are expected to, as it stands now. A lot can change in 4 years though.

OonaStubbs · 31/05/2025 19:54

At the end of the day, people are allowed to watch whatever TV channel they want. I wouldn't want to live in a country where this wasn't the case. Maybe they get something from watching GB News that Sky, the BBC or other news channels don't provide.

It is widely expected that Nigel Farage will be the next MP, its not funny and yes I will despair - but it could well be a coalition government between Tory and reform.

Don't underestimate NF and how he does things

That chart does not show anything about who is expected to win the next election. Don't you understand it, or were you trying to mislead people?

Your colleague is on dangerous territory for commenting in a disapproving tone in the workplace on what could be construed to be your lawfully held political or other beliefs.

Doesn't matter what mumsnetters think about your news source choices.
The criticism has no place in a workplace

Political beliefs aren’t a protected characteristic.
