Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

Yep, I would be looking at you in a new light now too

And not in a flattering light.

Gb news is the home of islamophobia, racism and bigotry. If I found one of my employees watching it, I'd fire them on the spot.

I remember a few years ago a staff member was accused of being a daily fail reader. I'm a firm believer in innocent till proven guilty but kept an eye on the person in the staffroom etc. As there was no evidence, we knew where he shopped enroute to work for snacks etc so questioned the shopkeeper. Along with his sandwiches ( meat which is another issue but not a red line) we found out his paper each morning was the daily fail. Needless to say he isn't working for us any longer. The sooner bigots are exposed the better for all of us and am proud to play a part in doing so. 👏

Are you joking or are you serious? Your post is so extreme it’s difficult to tell.

I sincerely hope you don’t actually employ people or, if you do, you’ve got very cheap but very good legal representation for all those employment tribunals…

Hoppinggreen · 31/05/2025 17:30

I wouldn't have said anything but I would have judged you - hard

The bitchiness on this thread is hilarious!!! Op it's a pile on!!!

Being "a migrant worker from a solidly working class background" might win an argument in The Guardian comments section - it doesn't here.

You were very keen to make a - petty, was that the word you used? - point about me replying to the wrong post but have taken umbrage (yes, that's how the word is spelt) when you've been on the receiving end of the same behaviour. You can TRY to have it both ways but it won't work.

How do you know she was 'very keen'? You seem to be an expert at reading things that aren't apparent into many comments.

It's obvious that the majority on this site don't like it. I get it, and I'm sure that the op gets it. We're on page 23 of this thread. The replies are looking childish and stupid.

I probably understand people better than you do. It's hard to explain to someone who struggles with it.

Every news outlet frames issues with an editorial slant.

You can think of the framing of a news story in terms of what's in the frame (the facts, opinions and quotes that are included in the article) and as what the frame itself is like (the language and context within the news outlet)
So say there's a piece of news - a report has been published showing that people between 18 and 25 are more likely to be out of work or education due to mental ill health than people aged 40 -67 let's say.
You might get somewhere like the economist reporting on this with a headline like 'Young people's mental health crisis costs the economy £100 million pounds a year' and they might get quotes from academic or political economists or policy makers.
The same story might be covered in the Mail with a headline like 'Generation Sick note - young people increasingly blame mental ill health for days off, but critics question if it's all just snowflakery' - which gives a (hateful in my opinion) human interest angle which appeals to the presumed prejudices of it's readership. They might get quotes from pundits who have commented on 'snowflakery' before.
GB news tends to cover stories in a way that undermines traditional political parties and established science in favour of 'disrupters' like Reform. It can do this by selecting stories images and quotes which give an overall picture of terrible chaos in the status quo and sensible sounding commentary from it's preferred politicians.
A good thing to do when you are looking at news sources is to understand their funding model. If someone is taking a financial hit to keep a news outlet afloat they're usually making a long term between on something else they want (think of Elon Musk and X for example)

@dexra fringe as in the edge of what is currently acceptable to broadcast.

gingercat02 · 31/05/2025 17:43

Someone put GB News on the waiting room tellies a few weeks ago and I enquired about fascist programmes, apparently a patient had asked for it.
It got changed back to Sky News.

Conkersinautumn · 31/05/2025 17:48

I'd generally assume most of my own colleagues would have better discernment than to watch GB News, so yes, I think that comment was fair enough. Always try to consider the bias of your preferred news outlet, its very easy to get caught in echo chambers. I DO think it is actually important to dip my toe in to different platforms on the same story from time to time and get out of my comfort zone, BUT I have never knowingly enjoyed GB news!

maltravers · 31/05/2025 17:48

I haven’t watched it personally, but I read both the Guardian and the Telegraph. It is good to be exposed to different points of view imo, hopefully it helps to stop you getting narrow minded.

TheAutumnCrow · 31/05/2025 17:49

Bluesuedevest · 31/05/2025 09:21

From what I've seen nearly all the female presenters have long hair.

Apart from that I can't see any cloning going on.

When and where did you see your first alien? GB news might want to do a segment on that.

Edited

The good old Guardian does aliens. Dozens of articles on intelligent alien life, UFO, the lot.

But that’s the acceptable face of discussion, obvs.

Oh shut up. Have you ever watched it?? It’s none of that at all!

Ironic?? I don’t understand.

On the contrary, we know that you struggle to infer intentions and emotional states from what someone writes. Your comment made that clear.

I am a senior lecturer in science media, so I have some back up to my view. I use GB news for fringe content on things like vaccine injury to illustrate the way different political leanings change the content and framing of various issues. It's fair to say I simplified my characterisation of it for this social media conversation to fit what OPs colleagues are likely to think of it.

Edited

I would expect more clear written communication and punctuation from a “senior lecturer” … your illustration in above comment is weak.

Perhaps you just lecture older folks …

Hoppinggreen · 31/05/2025 17:37

Or maybe the vast majority of us think that GB news is awful?

But no need to be bitchey or judgemental because someone has opposing political views??!! It's so childish. All my best friends have different political views to me, i think that is normal and healthy, we manage to have debates without getting nasty, unlike mumsnet!! But....I've said it before, it would be boring if we all agreed!!

Maddy70 · 31/05/2025 18:04

GB news is a reform propaganda channel not news

Be interested to know how many people think GBNews is actually a news channel. Because it isn't.

Exactly this. Should any TV channel in the UK be allowed to brand itself as ‘news’ whilst actually being licensed as ‘entertainment’? Is it fair for such a channel to be subject to far less stringent regulations than the actual news channels which many viewers clearly (judging by comments here and irl) see as its direct competitors?
