Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

yes, sorry its been a long day!

I don't think so. He has a low boredom threshold and the salary isn't great 😉

Political beliefs aren’t a protected characteristic.

They can be in certain circumstances.
“Religion or belief” is protected. Philosophical beliefs would come under this.

Holdonforsummer · 31/05/2025 20:11

People who watch/read right wing press and then act surprised when other people point out it is rightwing amaze me. How hilarious all these facists are!!

What do you think “fascist” means?

OonaStubbs · 31/05/2025 20:13

I just checked and Nigel Farage is indeed the bookies favourite to be the next PM.

You’ll be crying your eyes out when Reform wins the next General Election then. Which they are widely expected to do.

I mean, yes, if Reform win we are absolutely screwed on multiple levels. I'd be crying, for sure.

It's not news so you were having an entirely different conversation.

I wouldn't have said it out loud but I'd have definitely thought it.

This.

Political beliefs aren’t a protected characteristic.

They can be. And the Equality Act isn't the only source of legal backing for an employee who is being treated badly.

We are so doomed.

What is it with all this bonkers speculation ?

We are 4 years out from a GE.

Anything could happen in that time.

Has anyone not heard the expression " a week is a long time in politics"? Well at that rate 4 years is an eon.

Attributed to Harold Wilson, and probably first said at a lobby briefing for journalists at the time of the sterling crisis in 1964. Interestingly, as Nigel Rees in Brewer’s Quotations (1994) records, Wilson himself, when asked just after his retirement as Prime Minister in 1977, could not pinpoint the precise occasion on which he first used the words. The Liberal politician Joseph Chamberlain is recorded in 1886 as having said: ‘In politics, there is no use in looking beyond the next fortnight.’

Please tell me which of these you think covers political beliefs?

  • age
  • disability
  • gender reassignment
  • marriage and civil partnership
  • pregnancy and maternity
  • race
  • religion or belief
  • sex
  • sexual orientation

You have no idea what you're talking about.

Right wing is not the same as fascist. Neither is centrist. Or supporting women's rights. Or being concerned about illegal immigration. Or being upset about rape and grooming gangs. Or not wanting books to be banned. Or believing in free speech.

Literally none of those things are fascist.

Yep, I’d give you a wide berth too.

OonaStubbs · 31/05/2025 20:46

It's amazing how people take politics more seriously than the politicians do.

Floundering66 · 31/05/2025 20:48

My Dad watches GB news (I’m not that close to him and he is horribly racist) - it was on once when I popped over to see my mum and my jaw was on the floor with how shockingly biased and one sided the view point was. I felt the newsreaders were very unprofessional. Everything they said was just validating his views so he loves it. I would judge anyone who watches it and I would say I lean slightly to the right with my politics.

I wish more people did then perhaps we’d vote for better ones. We got Boris because he was apparently “a laugh”.

Is this from the same school as my parents go on 3 cruises a year, whilst complaining about losing their WFA?
