Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

1000 replies

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

Nige used to do a great segment called ‘talking pints’ (I’m not sure if it’s still going) - there would be a wide range of guests on that, a lot of sports people etc. I know the followers of the guests would often tune in - I suppose they all turned into extreme right racists too 😂

Love the play on words Talking Pints! I must try and watch that.

Fjssssx · 31/05/2025 10:35

YANBU. People at my work know I'm a member of the conservative party and no one bats and eye.

Rainiac · 31/05/2025 10:36

YANBU OP, and people here judging you are disgusting. GB news have been on the trans rights stuff for years - interviewing Helen Joyce and Maya Forstater when nobody else would. Giving great exposés on the realities behind violence against women at trans right rallies etc. They are honest about data including the fact that foreign born men commit a quarter of all sex crimes against women in the UK, and the vast majority coming into the country illegally are young men, not those most at risk in the countries they are fleeing from like women and children (in Afghanistan for example). Also on the realities of FGM rates in Britain, one of the highest in Europe and we have had barely any arrests on it despite it being outlawed in the 1980s and hundreds of thousands of incidents happening.

They have a large number of presenters, not all of whom I like personally, but some of whom are extremely socially liberal and not at all "fascist" as your colleague and as many on this thread seem to believe. It is not against the law to think that borders should be policed and doing so is protective of women and girls. In fact, you can occasionally watch GB news and not have these views too.

I have had a lot of success in an extremely left wing work environment after speaking to HR so I'd recommend you do that. You are more than entitled to occasionally watch GB news and your colleague should get some of the "be kind" training they're always banging on about.

EveSix · 31/05/2025 10:37

@Etaerio you're all over the place with your most recent responses to me. What have I said that you have taken such umbridge to, because you're really laying into me. I have consistently stated that what I'd find problematic is whether OP accesses only GB News (and possibly only 'occasionally', a source which they, by their own admission, has not realised is widely regarded as divisive. To me, this would be the problem in my place of work, as stated. I am fairly certain that GB News is watched closely by some of our most agile political thinkers.

On the subject of the use of first names for politicians; I suggest we do not refer to any politicians by their first names, whether their views align with our own or not. We do well to regard political leaders and the institutions and structures in which they operate with a measure of healthy arms-length respect and caution. First names infer trust and familiarity: encouraging their indiscriminate use becomes a shorthand for implied integrity and reliability.

As for my capacity for critical thinking at work; you're scraping...

SerendipityJane · 31/05/2025 10:38

For some reason I am reminded that in the 70s and 80s (some) men (claimed they) read Playboy "for the articles".

ParmaVioletts · 31/05/2025 10:40

@BadPennyReturns exactly

And I find it the types who make an assumption of you also and talkat you as if you agree with them
But it's exactly that kind of person who I find narrow minded intelligent people don't assume anything!

Biscuitsneeded · 31/05/2025 10:40

Perfectly reasonable comment. She was saying that you are better than that. So now do better!

Refreshing that you work in a tolerant place and not an echo chamber.

I'm not sure they still broadcast that show.

Nigel did interview Katy Price once - she was talking about making money by selling her old bras. I bet that put the viewing figures up!!

By history's standards. Unfortunately we know what happens when a population is fed propaganda and cannot discern truth from bigotry and hatred - you just need to look at 1930s Germany. The colleague in question here was actually saying she thought better of OP and hoped that she did in fact have the critical faculties to reject fascist propaganda.

Fascist propaganda 😅

Etaerio · 31/05/2025 10:47

@Evesix 8:32 today:

"If you're going to have a pop at someone, at least get it right. In fact, this is a good example of the lack of attention to detail and source critique I'd worry about. "

@Evesix 10:37 today:

"What have I said that you have taken such umbridge [sic] to ..."

If you're going to have a pop at someone for a lack of attention to detail, at least get it right.

See, other people can do it too 😆

wrongthinker · 31/05/2025 10:47

Fascist propaganda 😅

Do you not think it is, then? Can you really not see it?

Shakeoffyourchains · 31/05/2025 10:49

The fact that GB News repeatedly pushes the boundaries of impartiality regulations, and is regularly found in breach by Ofcom, should tell people everything they need to know about the motives and ethics of those behind the channel.

That so many aren't bothered by this simply because the content it pumps out reinforces their own beliefs is a depressing reminder of how far we’ve fallen as a society when it comes to valuing truth and accountability in our media.

Dangermoo · 31/05/2025 10:50

SunnieShine · 31/05/2025 10:06

Cobblers. Most people have a quick read now and then. And then they call it the "Daily Fail" to make themselves feel better about it. 😂

Quite. I bet they're the same people who post hyperbolic posts on threads such as the Nigel Farage and abortion threads. That was an entertaining read though. These are the folk suggesting if you vote Reform, you lack critical thinking skills! This thread is turning out exactly the same.

MrsSunshine2b · 31/05/2025 10:50

I don't know why you'd randomly bring up GB news in a conversation about the news. Most people mean news based on facts when they mention the news.

MatildaMovesMountains · 31/05/2025 10:51

Etaerio · 31/05/2025 10:17

You're criticising other people for being moronic? How fascinating!

You're not getting very far with your schoolmarming, are you? 😊

How very dare people form their own values and beliefs and have them validated by a legitimate news outlet.

Not sure that is politics, but bloody hell how low rent can you get???

Pluvia · 31/05/2025 10:52

I sometimes watch GB News. I also have a subscription to the Telegraph because an elderly relative subscribes to the hard copy and has given me access to the online copy that comes with it. I regularly watch the Spectator podcasts. I read, listen to and watch a variety of other news sources too.

I'm also an active and involved member of the Labour Party, am considering standing as a Labour councillor and am involved in local and national Labour politics. I helped to run an event in Parliament just a few weeks ago.

I think we all need to be aware of what all sides of the argument are saying and I'm ashamed and embarrassed for all of the virtue-signalling lefties who've piled onto the OP in an attempt to shame her.

Those of us on the left need to understand why people who used to automatically vote Labour are now looking towards Farage. Among local Labour members there is, quite rightly, concern about housing problems, education, the NHS and jobs as a result of immigration. It's not racist to talk about how these things impact ordinary people and how ordinary people feel about the ways society is changing. I don't want to live under a Farage government: I think that would be an utter disaster on so many fronts. That's why I listen to GB News and read the Telegraph.

Do you not think it is, then? Can you really not see it?

What do you understand the word "fascist" to mean? Does it cover the belief that women don't have penises or is that no longer wrongthink?

QurikySparrowHatrack · 31/05/2025 10:53

GeneralPeter · 31/05/2025 07:12

@QurikySparrowHatrack I agree the appropriate standard for a pressure group is different from a news site.

(I’m not certain that a pressure group is intrinsically biased though).

But TT is critical of gender norms and comes from a feminist perspective, not a conservative one. Yet it was rated at the extreme end of Right by that site.

That suggests to me that they don’t do their homework.

Spiked is another (odd) example. Founded by the staff of Living Marxist but now home to left and right libertarian and unorthodox opinion. It just got a straightforward Right rating, with no mention of its far left heritage anywhere in the write up.

For a site set up to analyse a full spectrum of the media, it doesn’t seem to handle the non-mainstream very well.

Edited

I do think its worth bearing in mind that MB/FC is a US based site that applies US standards. There's a far greater partisan split in attitudes in the US (where most left wing voters don't think society has gone far enough in accepting trans people) than there is in the UK. It's a generally well regarded website,

The voice of reason 👏. Not an echo to be heard. Respect.
