Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

It’s unintelligent to not get it. Or you’re acting dumb. I’m not defending GB news, I’m defending people’s right to choose whatever they want they watch.

People completely have the right to watch what they want but others have the same right to form opinions based on that information.

AaaahBlandsHatch · 31/05/2025 09:52

Haven't RTFT - have we had the usual "sneering like this is why we get Brexit/UKIP/Reform?" and "why do you hate normal working class people?" yet?

Because if so I'd just like it known that yes I do sneer. I'm solidly working class but judge people by their beliefs and actions, not their socioeconomic group. If someone's stupid and gullible I'm not gonna avoid calling them that just because they work in a shop or drive a lorry.

No one on Gbeebies is a normal working class person, much as they may pretend to be. Farridge certainly isn't.

Do keep up, @Etaerio! You've responded to @LillyPJ as if it was me.

Nope, not working in an academic environment in the slightest, just somewhere where a coworker's capacity to stay current and respond dynamically to events and pronouncements tends to be an indicator of their overall competence.

You are fortunate to work in an environment where logic and critical thinking are apparently not needed. You'd struggle otherwise. So, do you think that watching GB News indicates that someone can't respond dynamically to events? Let's try to trace your thought processes here.

Nobody is a Daily Mail reader now that you have to pay

Cobblers. Most people have a quick read now and then. And then they call it the "Daily Fail" to make themselves feel better about it. 😂

@FedupofArsenalgame It's called keeping informed; you check out news outlets out of curiosity, especially those likely to shape the political landscape in some form or wield some kind of influence. Nigel Farage (OP, please be careful with how you refer to political leaders; 'Boris' and 'Nige' infer a relaxed familiarity which creates an illusion of trustworthiness and causes some to drop their critical faculties) is a significant political 'personality', whether we like him or not, so naturally people who rely on being well informed will want to give the platform from which he broadcasts his agenda at least a cursory glance. It's not 'hypocrisy' (another commonly used dog-whistle), @ParmaVioletts , just due diligence.

Deliberately spelling someone's name wrong is a pretty reliable indicator that you've run out of arguments. Just so you know.

Hilarious! Calling political leaders who you disagree with by their first names is now Wrongthink. Culprits are asked to reflect on their misbehaviour.

BadPennyReturns · 31/05/2025 10:11

Your colleague sounds intolerant and narrow minded. Give her a swerve in future. It is a tactic to make you feel wrong.

Age has taught me to nod along and not get into debate with colleagues, it would start WW3 in our office, so I don't and they probably think I agree, but I do not. I was raised to be polite and tolerant of others. Most of us are the same...suppose that's why we are called the silent majority.

So the OP is " keeping herself informed" by watching it and being slagged off by others doing the same?
.
.I don't have a TV so rarely see any televised news

No, but it's the standard defence of those who watch/parrot it. "Just decent ordinary people wiv concerns about immigration"

I'm not trying to field an argument, I'm simply mocking Nigey Porridge and his moronic cronies.

So your argument is based on imagining that people you disagree with pronounce 'with' as 'wiv'. Not a great argument is it?

StarDolphins · 30/05/2025 22:36

its only on here that it has a bad reputation because MN imo is v left wing. I’ve heard plenty of people in real life say they watch it.

Watch what you want op!

Absolutely spot on. 👌 OP, you watch that news programme, OMG, how do you sleep at night? 😉 oops, me pearls have snapped.

You're criticising other people for being moronic? How fascinating!

Agree. The colleague might find it backfires anyway as being intolerant might not go down well.

BigTumSad · 31/05/2025 10:17

I used to switch between listening to a bit of GB news in the car, then switching over to James O'Brien on LBC! Two opposite ends of the spectrum, but I like to listen to different things. Personally I find radio 4 dull and im not a massive fan of the music channels. BBC or lbC news is ok sometimes. I can't really tolerate GB news these days, but did used to enjoy it.

I don't care what people choose to listen to! And it doesn't say anything about them at all!

Listening to GB news does not make a person a racist, bigoted numpty! Sad that this is what people tend to assume.

Yes, that is the entirety of my argument and you are extremely clever to have caught me out.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 31/05/2025 10:18

GBeebies are the ultimate in dog whistle reporting and so often breach Ofcom regulations, an absolute toilet of a broadcaster. The only place Farage belongs.

Indeed, which is why Reform find themselves beating Labour in the polls.

Astounding critical thinking going on there.

Bluesuedevest · 31/05/2025 08:43

I agree it was snarky.

People can watch what they want on TV and read what newspaper they want.

If people get judgemental about me I tell them I watch Russia Today and watch their jaws drop !

Al Jazeera works too. 😂😂

MumbleBumbleAppleCrumble · 31/05/2025 10:21

Why did you feel the need to highlight what news channel you watch? Especially one that has such a right wing reputation? Were others saying the channel they watch the news on or was it more of a ‘yes I do/ no, I find it all a bit much these days/ I just use my phone’ type conversation?
Sounds rather like you were adding a political element into the conversation that wasn’t asked for… might be wrong.
A bit like on election day someone asks if anyone’s yet managed to vote or will be going after work, and someone replies that not only have they already voted, but that they proudly voted Remain and cannot wait for this country to be cleaned up of all the migrants ruining it.
Especially, if your office is, like most, a good mix of various cultures and colours and creeds, then speaking out a as a GB news fan might be seen as also telling your colleagues that you don’t approve of them.

It is sad and ridiculous.

So much intolerance.

wrongthinker · 31/05/2025 10:25

I watch GB news from time to time. Not so much now that Andrew Doyle has left. But still. One of the few mainstream broadcasters who care about women's issues and have consistently reported on the women's rights debates and issues.
