Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

1000 replies

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

Do you not think it is, then? Can you really not see it?

Have you ever watched GB News? It has a range of presenters, many of them liberal and left-leaning. They give a platform to women and women's rights activists that very few mainstream broadcasters ever did. They have guests from across the political spectrum. I'd say they're centrist, liberal-leaning in general. They're pretty balanced, way more so than the Guardian, for example.

Where are you getting your idea that they're fascist from?

Saturdaybloodycleaner · 31/05/2025 10:56

Sorry OP, I’d silently judge too.

Having just been at my dads all week and watched it at his (constantly on and unavoidable) it’s so biased and apart from anything else, so bloody shoddy.

You're not getting very far with your schoolmarming, are you? 😊

Behave like a child and you'll be treated like one 😆.

Behave like a child and you'll be treated like one 😆.

The left do love to use their childish nicknames for those who represent the right. It's a notable hallmark, which quickly identifies there's no adult debate to be had.

Etaerio · 31/05/2025 10:53

What do you understand the word "fascist" to mean? Does it cover the belief that women don't have penises or is that no longer wrongthink?

I define it as far right nationalism. No inconsistencies there.

The trans debate is a separate issue. I don't believe that being gender critical is evidence of fascism, no - but stirring up hatred against migrants, peddling falsehoods about NHS waiting times, benefits etc - that IS far right propaganda whether you acknowledge it or not.

DeffoNeedANameChange · 31/05/2025 11:01

There's none quite so intolerant as a liberal leftie 🤷‍♀️

planetfall · 31/05/2025 11:02

If you'd raved about it, said you love it, it's the best, etc. then I could perhaps see her point. Judging you for saying you watch it occasionally and find some useful content is ignorant, though - no news sources are unbiased and if you want to be informed across the board and be aware of opinions and trends you may fully disagree with and opose, you need to be willing to watch a pretty broad spectrum. With critical thinking skills and the skills to check primary sources, you'll be OK even if you sometimes watch something dodgy or uneven. Assuming someone shares the biases or world view or political and social agenda of any source in their arsenal is a bit simple, or at best archaic.

SerendipityJane · 31/05/2025 11:05

Be interested to know how many people think GBNews is actually a news channel. Because it isn't.

Damn that pesky Farage and his advocacy of single sex spaces and protection of the fetus. How far right and abhorrent of him. Its not a pick and mix, where you select which premise offends you. Again, lack of critical thinking.

The fact that GB News repeatedly pushes the boundaries of impartiality regulations, and is regularly found in breach by Ofcom, should tell people everything they need to know about the motives and ethics of those behind the channel.

That so many aren't bothered by this simply because the content it pumps out reinforces their own beliefs is a depressing reminder of how far we’ve fallen as a society when it comes to valuing truth and accountability in our media.

Aside from the fact that you trust a body that exists entirely outside of the democratic system & is paid for by tax payers to impinge on the free press in this country.... Not very ethical or democratic if you ask me.

Ofcom got over 16000 complains when GMB's Ed Balls interviewed his own wife (Yvette Cooper) on one of the most significant social and political events in this country in the last few years (last summer's rioting) and did nothing about it.

The left leaning bias in quangos is well reported on, but only by the "unapproved" and "unacceptable" media outlets, so of course they must be wrong. Let's all be told what to think by an unelected body instead.

Lolapusht · 31/05/2025 11:09

So, the OP’s perfectly reasonable question has beautifully demonstrated how entrenched people are these days when it comes to affiliating themselves with a particular tribe.

If you watch GB News you are automatically a far-right gammon. Absolutely no awareness of how the media works these days. I used to get my news solely from the BBC but their recent performance means I now can’t rely on what they say so instead I get my news from a variety of sources. I don’t take any of the main news sources as gospel and I don’t just read what should be reliable sources (Guardian, looking at you).

Is there a left-wing version of GB News? Interesting if there isn’t. It could be that it’s not actually that right-wing…

Crack on watching GB News OP and judge your colleague for judging you. They didn’t think you were <gasp> RIGHT WING which you clearly are based on a tiny proportion of your news intake. I’d much rather people listen to things they don’t agree with in order to draw their own conclusions than blindly follow the mob.

Pinty · 31/05/2025 11:09

Sorry but yes I would have judged you too.

I just said I don't have a problem with anyone being gender critical. And you absolutely can pick and mix your views. Gender critical feminists would not subscribe to Farage's views on abortion!

To be clear: you believe that knowingly making a false statement about NHS waiting times is fascist?

A bit like Reform isn't a political party? ✔️ ✅️

Shakeoffyourchains · 31/05/2025 11:11

Dangermoo · 31/05/2025 10:51

How very dare people form their own values and beliefs and have them validated by a legitimate news outlet.

That’s what you took from my post? So you’ve no issue with media outlets breaching regulations and dodging accountability?

For example, Ofcom has clear rules prohibiting politicians from hosting news programmes, precisely because of impartiality concerns.

But GB News doesn't like this rule so gets round it by claiming that shows hosted by figures like Jacob Rees-Mogg aren’t “news” but “entertainment", despite the shows mimicking news broadcasts, complete with a rolling headline ticker and a London skyline backdrop. By all means, form your own opinions. But if you’re not bothered about whether they’re rooted in truth or reality, then you’re not just misinformed, you’re part of the problem.

I think you are very much part of the problem when you are selective about Ofcom reports.

Not really. In fact not at all.

We've changed. We can't see it.

If doing so to stir up resentment or hatred of minorities then yes, of course it can be a part of fascism.

The number of people who think it’s not fascism unless you’re building concentration camps is astonishing.

I’d definitely raise my eyebrows - at the very least - if someone I knew told me that they watched GB News.

Are you also a Daily Mail reader @OneStepBeyondd?
