Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

Just like you do when you tell people you read The Socialist Worker.

Aren't we supposed to be a tolerant society?

That's why so many people want to come here because they don't have to worry about the Secret Police kicking their door in at 2.00.am over reports of them reading the "wrong" literature.

Your post doesn’t make sense.

Well, I can't help you there. 🤔

LBFseBrom · 31/05/2025 09:00

Why on earth do you listen to that load of hyperbolic tripe? It's appalling and aimed at brainless sheep!

If someone said they didn't have you down as someone who would listen to that, they are actually paying you a compliment. Try to live up to it for goodness sake.

Nobody would have me down as a GB News supporter but then I am not a brainless xenophobe scared of people in boats and imagining hoards of men marching the streets with machetes. I live in the real world which is not all bad by any means..

Get real and keep better company. You were given a brain cell, exercise it.

BunnyLake · 31/05/2025 09:01

I’ve watched it occasionally depending on what the thumbnail says (Youtube), only for a minute as I have the attention span of a gnat. I’m not left or right politically. 🤷‍♀️

Thumbnail usually being what latest daft thing Prince Harry has done or something like that, not political thumbnails.

Some of these replies have been utterly brilliant.

Batshit MumsNet at its finest!

I can assure everyone I have not been radicalised and certainly wouldn’t class myself as racist/far right.

Brilliantly bonkers you lot 😂

Then why is GB News your information purveyor of choice? Why is that where you choose to get your news?

I’m really starting to fucking hate this place for the way people gleefully sneer at & look down on those whose political opinions don’t align with theirs, even at first glance and with little or no evidence.

That rather depends on what the political opinion is, doesn't it?? If someone's political opinions involve racism and supporting racists then that person is grotty and deserves to be told why their opinions are utterly ridiculous. Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from consequence: and the consequence of supporting unpleasant political opinions that have no basis in fact is that you should expect people to disagree with you and to disagree stridently. If you don't like that then too bad. Same goes for people who support a convicted felon who has confessed multiple times to groping women. There's no way someone who supports that kind of horrific behaviour should be "looked up to".

Weefox · 31/05/2025 09:03

I watch Russia Today from time to time
Fascinating
Just Google RT⁰

OneStepBeyondd · 31/05/2025 09:03

Nige used to do a great segment called ‘talking pints’ (I’m not sure if it’s still going) - there would be a wide range of guests on that, a lot of sports people etc. I know the followers of the guests would often tune in - I suppose they all turned into extreme right racists too 😂

She said she watches it occasionally.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 31/05/2025 09:04

YANBU. However, bizarrely, it seems like every poster on here has watched it as well so they are obviously "one of them" too.

StripyShirt · 31/05/2025 09:04

Plotzbluemonday · 31/05/2025 08:55

Is GB News “far right” or you have been told it’s “far right” and you believe it???

GB news does not fit definition of “far right”

You should always watch variety of news “channels” to get perspective.

Quite. This is increasingly becoming a label used to discredit and dismiss anything that does not conform to current 'right' thinking. In the same way, the MAGA crowd have their 'commie lefty' enemies.

We simply have to polarise things these days; it's either far left or far right. With us or against us. None of that 'nuance' nonsense. What's happened to just 'right wing' and 'centre right', 'centre left' etc???

maybeuptight · 31/05/2025 09:05

I will watch whatever news is on and believe none of them without confirmation from elsewhere. It's not helpful to only listen to reports from one source because each has a different agenda. There doesn't seem to be much journalistic integrity around.

BunnyLake · 31/05/2025 09:03

She was asked if she watched the news and she said she watched GB News occasionally. So, that’s the only news she watches. I’m asking why.

NicolaCasanova · 31/05/2025 09:05

YABU to watch GB News.

I agree, some people just come here looking for an "echo chamber".

SarfLondonLad · 31/05/2025 09:08

Not in the slightest.

MyLimeGuide · 31/05/2025 08:41

This is true, most higher earners tend to be right wing.

You've lost me. Where is the link with earnings in what I wrote? Academics are not high earners as a rule, and neither are those of us working in my field. As I stated in my initial post, "Political views aside," there is a spectrum of political opinion in my place of work, but we're all expected to keep informed and professionally curious.

As opposed to the forum for varied and diverse opinions and viewpoints that is GB News.

Apologies, I should have said in my experience.

clappydays · 31/05/2025 09:11

Watching a variety of news sources is good for you! Otherwise you end up believing that everything you disagree with is ‘far Right’. People don’t even know what that term means but they keep saying it anyway.

LillyPJ · 31/05/2025 09:14

@MyLimeGuide Using the phrase ' the lefty mind' just shows the level of your biased thinking.

lljkk · 31/05/2025 09:15

My perception of 'GB News' is that it's not news at all. It exists to try to upset people. They want to wind you up & get you angry. Not at them, just at x in the world.

It's the same business model for engagement on Facebook and maybe other SM: Angry reactions are prioritised. If you get angry at something you'll see lots more like it in your feed. Engagement = monetisation, it's a way to capture your eyeballs & then see the adverts. Facebook rates 'sad' as the next highest engagement reaction, while likes or hearts or cares are all rated in the lowest tier.

Anyway, I rather purposefully don't engage with anything that is trying to make me outraged or upset. I don't understand wanting to do that... but it is obviously very popular to do. You see it on MN, too. People enjoy getting angry or outraged.

I am fond of a housebound person I help out regularly & she has GB News on very often. I have only said the last part to her, "I wouldn't watch anything regularly that consistently seems to upset me."
