Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

Do keep up, @Etaerio! You've responded to @LillyPJ as if it was me.

Nope, not working in an academic environment in the slightest, just somewhere where a coworker's capacity to stay current and respond dynamically to events and pronouncements tends to be an indicator of their overall competence.

Abhannmor · 31/05/2025 08:20

I know! You keep encountering all these loopers on the Guardian comments now. I have issues with the Guardian too - but at least it's not 100% mind rot.
I saw Sky News recently and found it surprisingly balanced. Perhaps a sign of how far right the 'window' has shifted?

Why are you being so condescending?

Have you never tagged the wrong person on here or responded to the wrong post?

I certainly have.

EasternStandard · 31/05/2025 08:21

Etaerio · 31/05/2025 08:14

So why do Guardian readers get a free pass for not realising how biased and poor their rag of choice is?

A lot of empty-headed snobbery on this thread.

Maybe the op should avoid the colleague for being this.

YouAreEntitledToMyOpinion · 31/05/2025 08:27

There's nothing wrong with GB News or the Daily Mail. Same as someone enjoying left leaning programmes or publications. Most people can digest both and have balanced views. The people I know are mostly centre-right or centre-left and I would not judge anyone for watching a news programme.

Some of the 'wrong thought' comments on here give me visions of Rik from The Young Ones. Right on!

justasking111 · 31/05/2025 08:27

I wonder if the news media you read watch is a geographical thing. What social issues affect your lives in your area.

Abhannmor · 31/05/2025 08:28

Sorry ...this was a reply to @JaneJeffer !

Where is your evidence that it is either of those things? Their main anchors are gay men and females (one of whom is also black). There’s a lot of judgement here about viewers lacking critical thinking skills, but sweeping statements without any basis in objective fact aren’t doing the counter narrative any favours either…

You do realise a gay man can be racist or a black woman could be homophobic? (Not saying these individuals are, but generally it can be true.).

And to add, if you watched any of the aftermath of the dreadful events in Liverpool last week on GB News, the very moment it was known the person driving the car was white, you immediately saw how racist these people/that channel are.

Not condescending, just responding in kind to @Etaerio who upbraided another poster in response to a post I made. If you're going to have a pop at someone, at least get it right. In fact, this is a good example of the lack of attention to detail and source critique I'd worry about. GB News assumes its viewers either do not interrogate its content critically or are caught thinking mainstream media are committed to 'cover-ups' and hence 'do their own research', which tends to be easily debunked as entirely false or deliberately misrepresentative.

MillieCan · 31/05/2025 08:32

In reply to the original question I think that colleague was rude and unnecessary. At least now they have shown their intolerance you can avoid them as much as possible.

I expect the colleague will be very relived.

This is true, most higher earners tend to be right wing.

Bluesuedevest · 31/05/2025 08:43

I agree it was snarky.

People can watch what they want on TV and read what newspaper they want.

If people get judgemental about me I tell them I watch Russia Today and watch their jaws drop !

BruisedNeckMeat · 31/05/2025 08:45

Anyone who wants to give me a wide berth because of what I occasionally choose to watch/consume is very welcome to do so.

Of course they can watch what they like. However you’re telling people what your politics and values are when you share that you watch GB News.

hididdlyho · 31/05/2025 08:47

I'd assume the colleague is narrow minded and possibly not particularly confident in their own political views (probably lives in an echo chamber). I can watch or read something I don't agree with just for it's entertainment value or to understand how other people think and would presume other intelligent adults are the same. If someone tells me they read the Daily Mail, I wouldn't assume they only ever read the one newspaper.

Thegreyhound · 31/05/2025 08:47

Mrsknowitall · 30/05/2025 23:18

What a stupid comment, get a grip! I’ve not said anything racist or homophobic.

That’s why I used the conditional word ‘if’ which suggests it’s hypothetical.

But I’m not sure how it’s ‘stupid’ to say that someone saying something racist or homophobic should shut up. They absolutely should.

FigTreeInEurope · 31/05/2025 08:48

GB News is like a hybrid between selected Enoch Powell speeches vol I, and the Beeno. I think I might be more Tony Robinson than Tommy Robinson. At least baldrick had a plan.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 31/05/2025 08:51

MyLimeGuide · 31/05/2025 07:49

Not the dregs, the majority. Google it.

I can't see that anything about the info I have attached which suggests Reform followers are in the majority, just as posting intention to vote figures proves anything about their actual status. They probably make up the majority of GB News, I concede. I used the word dregs to avoid using a more offensive term.

Just like you do when you tell people you read The Socialist Worker.

Aren't we supposed to be a tolerant society?

That's why so many people want to come here because they don't have to worry about the Secret Police kicking their door in at 2.00.am over reports of them reading the "wrong" literature.

Yes, obviously.

No I didn’t. Again it would be helpful if, rather than just blithely stating they were racist in their response, there was some detail provided.

I am extremely centrist and moderate in my personal views, but I do find there is a rising tendency to make all debates reductive, polarised and not necessarily backed up with facts depressing. You only have to read the comments on here to see that it all became horribly personal really rapidly.

FFS People finding Nigel Farage entertaining as what's landed us in this fucking mess.

OneStepBeyondd · 31/05/2025 08:53

Some of these replies have been utterly brilliant.

Batshit MumsNet at its finest!

I can assure everyone I have not been radicalised and certainly wouldn’t class myself as racist/far right.

Brilliantly bonkers you lot 😂

GB news is known for it's far right editorial stance so presumably she thought you would have had different political opinions to that.

Is GB News “far right” or you have been told it’s “far right” and you believe it???

GB news does not fit definition of “far right”

You should always watch variety of news “channels” to get perspective.

StripyShirt · 31/05/2025 08:56

I read the Guardian and also some fairly right-wing stuff. Do I agree with or believe every position taken by both sources? No, of course not. Do I agree with some bits of each? Yes, of course.

I read stuff critically and arrive at a conclusion. This is balance.
