Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

1000 replies

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

It’s necessary. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. Find a reputable news source, OP. In fact, find more than one. I read The Guardian and The Times. The truth is usually in the middle of those!

How do you read “in the background”

Never seen GB news as the news programmes I have seen put me right off watching or listening to any news again

Etaerio · 31/05/2025 07:53

You're going to monitor someone in work because they sometimes watch GB News? 😂

And I’d be more worried about the Guardian-reading BMA committee type of younger clinician who doesn’t know what biological sex is.

Blimey, I must say I didn’t realise it has something of a reputation! I only watch it once in a while if struggling for something else to watch, and I find Nigel entertaining on occasion too when he gets on his high horse!

“Entertaining”. Blooming heck, you need to get out more. He’s a racist liar, find someone else to entertain you!!

I’d definitely raise my eyebrows - at the very least - if someone I knew told me that they watched GB News.

Are you also a Daily Mail reader @OneStepBeyondd?

Oh god no! Not the most popular paper in Britain!

That's one hell of a stretch. What is your evidence that every Guardian reader subscribes to every aspect of their editorial policy?

AgnesX · 31/05/2025 08:07

She should have kept her opinion to herself. I'd be thinking it though.

LizzieSiddal · 31/05/2025 08:07

I will admit I sometimes put GB News on, I like to see what the enemy are up to.
Usually within two minutes they show themselves to be so narrow minded and thick that it blows my mind.

NeelyOHara · 31/05/2025 08:08

Lots of Mumsnet posters will only admit to reading The Guardian, despite the fact that the Guardian holds women in absolute contempt and wouldn’t piss on them if they were on fire.

I’m as GC as they come and I read The Guardian daily. I just ignore any article written about women’s rights.

Eh? That’s quite the non sequitur.

No one on mn reads it apparently ; yet it gets linked often.

All these pp ‘monitoring’ others. Definitely best to avoid news discussions with them.

In most lines of work supporting misogyny and homophobia would be a serious concern so yes I’d be surprised anybody admitted to supporting GB News and would be monitoring it.

Where is your evidence that it is either of those things? Their main anchors are gay men and females (one of whom is also black). There’s a lot of judgement here about viewers lacking critical thinking skills, but sweeping statements without any basis in objective fact aren’t doing the counter narrative any favours either…

But why is it not ok to assume this about Guardian readers but ok to make the same assumption about GB viewers?

The amount of times GB News has been in trouble with Ofcom for not following rules on actually being news... I do hope you have other media sources to balance it.

Its a very prejudiced and manipulative far right news channel

If I hadn’t said it I would have thought it.

Stick to the BBC, it’s as neutral as you can get. If you are bothered, make a reference to one of their news programmes sometime, to try and improve the colleague’s opinion of you.

In OP's case, because she apparently hasn't even noticed how biased they are and how poor their reporting is.

I’d judge this too, if a colleague said it. Farage is a demagogue- the appropriate reaction to him is horror, not entertainment.

I didn't say monitor. I said I might keep a closer eye out. It depends on context and other patterns of behaviour or other comments made, etc, as to how much I might keep an eye out or not. In my line of work, unfortunately as soon as you leak any strong political views at work, of any flavour, you're open to more scrutiny.

As I said in a previous post, I've had more problems in this regard with staff who hold more contemporary left beliefs, or are into LGBTQ+ activism and things like that, so no particular set of beliefs being singled out here. My department mainly trains mental health professionals like therapists, psychologists, MH nurses, etc, and no, it's not a university. Like it or not, we are held to higher standards in terms of being able to bracket off our own beliefs and offer patients a non judgemental, neutral space.

So why do Guardian readers get a free pass for not realising how biased and poor their rag of choice is?

A lot of empty-headed snobbery on this thread.

ChampagneLassie · 31/05/2025 08:15

I recently worked somewhere which had GB news on in the office! I don’t know who put it on but I didn’t hear anyone comment or complain so I kept my own thoughts to myself!

LillyPJ · 31/05/2025 08:16

TENSsion · 31/05/2025 07:51

Just a few leveled at OP because she dared to watch an “unapproved” tv show:

Do you engage your brain
old gammons
overt racists
Nazi
Hateful
tin foil hat brigade
disgusting

Ah - apologies. I thought you meant that I'd used a vile insult (which I hadn't). I agree that it's wrong to do that, or to jump to conclusions about the OP.
