To think that women (or men) who drop their kids off at school in PJS, go shopping in Tesco in pj's and come down to the breakfast in a hotel in pj's are wrong in the head?

I visited Amsterdam last year and was shocked to see an apparently middle class women coming down to breakfast in her pj's,dressing gown and slippers. Similarly going round Tescos where there are people, especially women in pj's and slippers. No doubt I'll be called an old right wing fascist or something.

Simply because I want to look presentable. The same as most people going to work or out and about want to look presentable.

I’m presentable without make up and jewellery. I don’t wear either at home, going shopping, to work etc.

That might be the difference then I guess. I think I’m presentable (even attractive!) without make up and jewellery.

Hubblebubble · 03/06/2025 18:25

@WhereHasMyPlanetGone same! I've got excellent skin and think it could well be because I rarely wear any make up. I moisturise and use spf. That's it.

It must be awful feeling so insecure that you need a face full of makeup and a load of jewellery to feel that you are presentable.

Well you're talking about most women then. Do you think a woman sitting opposite you on the tube or at work wearing make up and jewellery is "insecure?" Woukd you tell your female colleague she is insecure and it would be better if she came to work in her pj's 😅

Only if she told me we all needed it to be presentable.

If she wore it because she felt it was right for her or she liked it, fine. If she was telling me it was the only way to be presentable, yes, I'd tell her she was insecure.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 03/06/2025 18:55

Are you not comprehending that going out in pj's is weird and anti social? If you're defending this, try going to work in your pjs or underwear. It might be a hill worth dying on for.

I asked my DH who works in an NHS Practice what he would do if a colleague turned up wearing pj's. He said I'd sack them. Seriously? All you people protesting know it wouldn't be tolerated in the workplace.

How many people have you seen at work in their pjs? Although, WFH these days, you'd be amazed how many are in pjs.

How are you not comprehending that people have different ideas of acceptable and what is required to be "presentable"? And why is that not ok?

Seriously, who made you the authority on what's "presentable"?

YourAmplePlumPoster · 03/06/2025 19:11

Just in the last month, one woman complimented me on my necklace in a caff and three women complimented me on my handbag saying it was really nice when I was at various concerts. Why do you think women compliment other women out of the blue like that? I didn't know any of them.

I have a teacher friend who did online classes during Covid. She said a number of students turned up in their pj's and she wouldn't allow them to join the class. Yay😃

Because....they like your things?

I complimented a woman on a really cool pair of shoes the other day. Not because I thought they were necessary to be presentable but because I liked the shoes.

I've also told people I like their PJ's on world book day or something. Because I liked their PJ's.

It's absolutely nothing to do with their opinion on what is considered presentable and everything to do with whether they like the thing they're complimenting.

Don't be ridiculous, I'm talking about snobs who look down on other women for not wearing make up etc.

I dont look down on them. I do look down on someone who wears pyjamas outside or men who go bare chested into a pub with their man boob's and builders crack on display. Do you remember the word "common?" It's quite appropriate.

It’s like the broken window theory in 1980s New York. If wearing PJs in public becomes acceptable what next?

Once upon a time, people made that sort of remark about women wearing trousers.

You can equally ask where does the policing of what people wear and where they wear it end?

But we aren't talking about the workplace. What has the workplace got to do with a hotel breakfast or the local shop?

Why on earth do you keep leaping to scenarios we aren't actually discussing? At least this is marginally less stupid than equating wearing pyjamas with opening your bowels on the street.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 03/06/2025 20:26

What next? Go to the shops or breakfast buffet in pants and bra, cause its my rights innit? I bet half the people posting here moaning wouldn't do that or even go to those places in their pj's.

Just cos we don't do it doesn't mean we judge people who do and say they're "wrong in the head".

You've been given valid reasons why people might do it and are still being incredibly rude. I can't believe @MNHQ have allowed this thread to run with some of the horrible things that have been said about people.

No, I wouldn’t, you’re right. I just don’t give a shit if someone else does.

How do you know people dont sleep in a tshirt and leggins & put clean PJs to go out in? sounds silly but that is why I dont judge on appearance alone you never know and judging says more about the Judge than anyone else

If people have so little in their lives they want to judge others that is on them

Oh, you should see how much I've got going on in my life. I will not bother you with a list, but I am a happy person who has made most of her dreams come true -and keeps working towards the remaining ones, which is the best part. And I've made them all come true dressed in nice clothes... many of them from op shops or cheap brands, as I don't care for big brands or designer stuff. As I always say, it takes the same time to get into old, ugly clothes, or nice, clean ones. As you leave the house, throw a pair of earrings and a necklace in your pocket, and put them on as you walk to the car or the bus. I usually paint my nails as I drive (traffic lights) or on bathroom breaks at work!😁

Anyway, keep enjoying your PJs if it suits you. To each their own. I will keep enjoying my very full life. By the way, commenting on Mumsnet is my downtime some days, so I will keep this up too. There's always someone who bites back, and it's fun.

Why do you keep saying these things in that accent? Innit? Etc. What are you trying to convey exactly? The class, origin or part of the country you expect these people to be from?

I don't think people should wear pyjamas out for hygiene reasons mainly. I also don't think anyone should be unable to leave the house without make up as jewellery, that's possibly more barmy to me.

This is much worse than someone wearing pjs. Because it's actually dangerous...you're endangering others so you have pretty nails.

Being doing this for 20 years. I can paint my nails with my eyes closed. Two seconds per nail, I've counted. I also do them as the lift goes up, as I sit on the toilet, etc. I only gave this example to say that looking well does not take any time at all.

I guess it’s all about perception. I am firmly anti pyjamas outside of the house. But I also find people doing their make/up on the tube, or nails in the car rather tacky. I guess we all find different things to judge!
