To think high heels (especially when worn casually) look absolutely ridiculous?

Takemeback84 · 28/05/2025 17:26

I’m probably going to get absolutely flamed for this.

But aibu to think that high heels are a complete monstrosity? The only time I think they are passable is if it’s something very formal. For example TV presenters sitting on a couch, or attending an award ceremony. As they’re really being worn just for show.

Tbh I don’t see many people wearing high heels these days, but sometimes I’ll notice a women teetering round the park or the shops, barely able to walk and looking very uncomfortable, I’ve even seen a woman bowling in high heels.

They look so uncomfortable and impractical.

Woman to another woman: “Don’t wear heels, patriarchy, male gaze etc etc…
Wear what I consider attractive or you’ll look like a frumpy old hag!”

👏👏👏👏👏agree.

yabu, high heels make a woman look sexy! it elongates the leg and makes your walk sexier

as long as you can walk in them of course, otherwise they do look a mess

I think you'll find a good brain is considered of more relevance these days . . .

Tbrh · 28/05/2025 22:11

YABU. Stilettos are sexy as hell!

what's having 'a good brain' got to do with wearing heels?

Ramblethroughthebrambles · 28/05/2025 22:13

I'm not keen either on vitriol towards other women for their fashion choices. We all have to find a way of navigating the expectations placed on women whilst trying to find a style we're comfortable with. Some will feel more comfortable dressing mainstream, some won't. I was reacting to some posters asking why others might feel angry about footwear they could just choose not to wear themselves. I think it's the fashion industry my frustration is directed towards and societal expectations around women's clothing.

Alot of projecting on here I think

SquashedSquid · 28/05/2025 22:15

I personally hate them. The way they look, the way they feel, how damaging they are for feet and legs. They're so uncomfortable. I only really see them now on older women. The young people in my area at least tend to be wearing Converse, DMs, trainers etc.

Sexy? Problematic term and not in itself something positive

Sexy is a problematic term? Is it?

I like to feel and look sexy for my DH and he does for me. High heels are not necessarily a part of that but let's not get ridiculous in saying that the term sexy is 'problematic'.

Consenting adults are allowed to find each other sexy.

I love them. I own probably over 200 pairs of designer shoes at the moment and 90 percent of them are heels. I literally love everything about them. My only regret in life is not wearing them more! That and bikinis, I wish I'd basically worn nothing but a bikini and some strappy choos for my entire 20s.

How old are you? Do you not feel uncomfortable walking in them after 5 minutes of wearing? I am in 40s, my knees have started having problems, so cannot wear them at all.

Coolasfeck · 28/05/2025 22:25

5128gap · 28/05/2025 21:26

It comes up on MN on a fairly regular basis. Usually triggered by someone having seen a woman in heels and wanting reassurance that they're not coming back. I get it. I'd love to think that the shoes my 56 year old feet are happy in are the very things that women with younger more resilient feet are wearing because they're the height of fashion. But I only need to glance at the high strappy sandals, ankle boots and cowboy boots around me when I venture out out to know its not always the case.

I think you’ve nailed it. There’s a lot of ‘coping’ on this thread.

PizzaSophiaLoren · 28/05/2025 22:26

DH says they aren’t especially sexy.
But I get that sexy is nuanced, individual, and complicated.

abracadabra1980 · 28/05/2025 22:26

Depends entirely who is wearing them and why. I live in a coastal surfy town whereby they have never been cool, and never will be.

UseNailOil · 28/05/2025 22:26

I didn’t used to think this but I do now.
Ever since Covid and trainers becoming mainstream fashion for absolutely everyone of any age I just look at high heels as a bit regressive.

And very subjective.

LoveTKO · 28/05/2025 22:30

They’re old fashioned. But will come back in fashion as that’s what fashion designers do. Have us going back and forward, spending money.

A few years ago there was an employer who expected a female receptionist to wear heels. I hope that doesn't happen nowadays.

Heels should be saved for a film or theatrical performance where necessary to play a character from history who wore them.

Or maybe saved for women who like wearing them?

Canshehavewaferthinham · 28/05/2025 22:35

Maybe It's regional as I see women of all ages wearing them where I live.

I have to be careful with them-they're one thing I won't skimp on as the more expensive ones are so much easier to walk in, just better molded to one's foot and generally. Elegant wedges are my go-to but I can do 'proper' heels if they're well made.

YourAquaLion · 28/05/2025 22:35

Omg I absolutely love the look of heels but they’re so not worth the pain! When I used to wear them in my 20s I also had to take a pair of flip flops in my handbag to walk home
in. And now I don’t wear anything I can’t run after my 4yo in lol! I still have a beautiful gold pair from Top Shop at uni that I sometimes get out and try on, and remember I can’t walk in! I never wear them but can’t bear to get rid.

Oh and I am early forties and have had knee issues since my early thirties (running is bad for you)!

I have to say I don’t understand this notion that women having opinions is equated to tearing each other down or something unbecoming.Aflawed behaviour
Why is women actively defending their pov tearing each other down? It is permissible for women to disagree, be strident and engage in argument
Equating women have opinions that they vigorously defend as tearing each other down is really another version of the Be nice!Speak nice trope. We don’t want women getting too opinionated.

Edited

There are ways to “actively defending their pov” ( can’t believe you actually wrote that about shoes of all things) It’s the language used on this thread, desperate, try hard, ridiculous, Andrew Tate, Benny Hill, I could go on and yes it is tearing other women down by sneering at them in a derogatory manner. I’m sure you wouldn’t like it if I said I think women who wear flat shoes look like they have clown feet, walk like a duck and look utterly ridiculous would you? Oh and the best one, your flats really age you! Have your opinions by all means but do it without the nasty comments.

Astrabees · 28/05/2025 22:40

I used to wear very high heels for work and they just felt normal, I could run for a bus wearing them. They made me feel very confident and attractive. I have no occasion to wear them now but I still have a few pairs and wear them from time to time at home just to keep in practice.

I think there is a lot of group self soothing as well.
