To think high heels (especially when worn casually) look absolutely ridiculous?

Takemeback84 · 28/05/2025 17:26

I’m probably going to get absolutely flamed for this.

But aibu to think that high heels are a complete monstrosity? The only time I think they are passable is if it’s something very formal. For example TV presenters sitting on a couch, or attending an award ceremony. As they’re really being worn just for show.

Tbh I don’t see many people wearing high heels these days, but sometimes I’ll notice a women teetering round the park or the shops, barely able to walk and looking very uncomfortable, I’ve even seen a woman bowling in high heels.

They look so uncomfortable and impractical.

yabu, high heels make a woman look sexy! it elongates the leg and makes your walk sexier

as long as you can walk in them of course, otherwise they do look a mess

I have never thought they look sexy on anyone

Are you always this much fun? 🙄

I've seen her in other shoes and she can walk fine, just insists on wearing shoes she can't walk properly in for work.

My idea of "fun" isn't mocking other people going about their business, clearly yours is. I'm alright not being "fun" if that's what I need to do to qualify for your idea of what fun looks like. If she looks so silly, why don't you do her a favour and let her know she can't walk properly?

Magicalbeaver · 29/05/2025 09:23

Come back when you're 5'0 tall or shorter! I love a good block heel.

Steamirin · 29/05/2025 09:32

VivaDixie · 28/05/2025 17:49

I agree. I'm 52 and can remember a time when we all wore them. Remember stilettos and jeans 🤦‍♀️🤣

I haven't bought a pair of heels for about 20 years, I think since my wedding. I still have a couple of pairs but never wear them now.

You're right, it's change of fashion. Now heels remind me of my DMs tarty friend from the 80s who used to brag to teenaged me that stockings, suspenders and high heels were the way to get a man 😳

I've never worn them in my life and I'm nearly 60! We certainly didn't all wear them, I've been a DM person forever!

IfNot · 29/05/2025 09:41

I was 16 in 93. Yes, for dancing all night I wore stacked sneakers, but for bars or parties definitely girls wore heels a lot. I never liked the towering stilletoes but a wedge or a chunky block heel, oh yes. 93/94 was when glam came back to clubbing and as a pp said in garage clubs it was all very bling.
I still love long boots with a heel worn with a midi length skirt. It’s hard to pull off midi, or midaxi, with a flat shoe, especially if you have sturdy ankles..
As for corsets and crinolines never coming back….Vivienne Westwood??

So you think it's ok to go up to someone and tell them they look ridiculous but it's not ok to share anonymously on a (fun and not deadly serious) forum? 🙄

Surely better to discreetly tell them they look a bit odd walking in heels than start laughing so much you have to walk a different way from them because they look so silly! Do you think they don't wonder why that other mum walks away from them smirking? Bet you laugh at people with toilet paper stuck to their shoes or their skirt tucked in their knickers don't you because it's so much fun. And if you think that this thread has been fun then you have an odd view of what constitutes fun because it's been downright nasty!

You need to get some Polyfilla for that massive chip on your shoulder.

Not sure that's the witty come back you think it is. What do I have chip on my shoulder about? I think it's not nice to mock someone but not be willing to tell that person they look silly and maybe save them from more mocking. You think it's fun to snigger behind some's back. We are just different people with dfferent opinions of what constitutes "fun".

SuziQuinto · 29/05/2025 08:40

Nope. As I said upthread, I'm 5' 1" and never worn heels, never will. I'm the height I am and it's never been a problem!

Yes we are all different and id wear heels if I was short (on nights out anyway) . Others wouldnt bother.

Yes, it's all about what you want to wear. Not about your height or any societal pressures on women's appearance.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 29/05/2025 12:09

I would like to be able to wear heels. Not ridiculous tottering heels but something over 1 inch high. I have stumpy short legs and often have to attend Big Dinners (the sort of thing that's much photographed, with the odd Famous Person in attendance) and so many outfits without heels make me look like I'm wearing my mum's clothes (I'm 5'6 so not 'petite'. I just have very short legs). I want to look elegant and leggy but I can't walk in heels at all. So I wear wedges as a compromise (but I'd still love to wear 6" heels).

Angrymum22 · 29/05/2025 12:12

I lived in stilettos in my 20s but never more than 2.5”. I have very good legs and frequently was complemented on them. I suppose because the rest of me was pretty average I liked to showcase my best asset. Not a popular view nowadays although I think young women now are probably far worse due to social media and don’t get me started on filters. You were who you were pre digital photos.
I still have the legs but tend to cover them in jeans or long skirts/dresses. But still receive complements when they make a rare appearance.

I bought some shoes a few months ago that I hadn’t worn until recently…..the optical illusion type that look like they are going to be absolute foot killers, but have enough platform in the front that you aren’t totally on your tippy toes. Heel is a lovely thick block, has to be 6 inches but it’s counteracted by a platform in the front.
I wore them for a fancy steakhouse dinner, walked about 10 mins to the next bar, walked back to the car, DH drove to the next venue, I walked around there for the rest of the night and my feet were perfectly safe. Might be the comfiest heels I’ve ever owned! Feels like a win 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Tbrh · 28/05/2025 23:44

You must not go 'out out' much because young people never stopped wearing heels. Neither did old people who still can. Sadly I can't anymore, but I still admire them from afar. Also, do you never look at a magazine or high fashion shops, heels are not dated, the style of the heel might change but they will never date. Agree with PP that fashion changes so we buy things, jeans are a good example! Everyone should just wear what they want, and there's really no need to criticise people for it. Although I will have to agree with you about crocs, I see something wrong when I see 3 generations of a family, both male and female all wearing the same shoes 😵

I guess it depends where you go. I live in a big city and go out far too much. I still enjoy clubbing and go out once or twice a week. It's probably the type of places I go!

Onelifeonly · 29/05/2025 16:32

I used to think high heeled shoes made certain outfits look smarter, and, though I always felt hobbled in them, I did wear them occasionally (to weddings, special parties etc). But now I generally think they look ridiculous and kind of judge the wearer (unless it's the kind of situation where everyone does, but I don't go to those anymore) as being too bound up in the impression they are trying to give others. To me flat shoes and trainer styles now look fine with most things.

thecatneuterer · 28/05/2025 17:47

No, I'd be thrilled to be middle aged again. It's just an observation. You don't see them on the young or the old, just the middle aged.

Well, I'm old and I still wear heels whenever I get dressed up. I also wear a face full of slap too. I only have two talents - walking in heels and applying makeup - and I'm loathe to relinquish either of them!

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 29/05/2025 18:17

Here is my question - how do you drive in them?! Genuinely want to know.

tbh I love high heels but it’s a certain type of woman who wears them - sort of a glamazon, pain is beauty type who I can’t help but admire! Dedication to the cause 😂.

Buffs · 29/05/2025 18:23

How tall are you?

the80sweregreat · 29/05/2025 18:23

I do feel that the high heel bridgade ( that I’ve always envied ) tend to have low heels or trainers in the boot of their car for the sensible option footwear ! You can’t possibly drive in them ! Although I bet some may do

shivermetimbers77 · 29/05/2025 19:02

I think they can look amazing, and used to wear them a lot when I was young, but can’t even imagine wearing them now- makes me wince to think of putting my feet in them these days!

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 29/05/2025 19:30

It's the usual,

Ooh I've stopped colouring my hair, everyone should too.

I now use bar shampoo, you need to do so too.

I don't like heels/can'twalk in them anymore, so no-one else should wear them either.

Skinny jeans are so yesterday, you need to stop wearing them now.

The dress and white trainers combo is so done, you can't seriously be wearing it still.

I see lots of things that aren't my preference everyday, only I don't get offended by it. People can wear what they choose.

And shock horror, sometimes, women choose to dress for themselves.

If you're happy in your own skin, why do you care what somone else is wearing.

So you wore them as you thought they made an outfit look smarter, but anyone else wearing them is "bound up in the impression they're trying to give others"

Judging someone in heels like you do, not knowing anything about them says more about you.

It’s just such a change in fashion. I occasionally have to go to my London office and it really catches my attention when a smartly dressed woman is clip clopping on the platform in high heels. Ten years ago every single person would have been wearing them.

I was one of them for a lifetime I’ve just returned to London. What are people wearing instead apart from loafers? My job won’t tolerate trainers. Thank you !

Sexy is a problematic term? Is it?

I like to feel and look sexy for my DH and he does for me. High heels are not necessarily a part of that but let's not get ridiculous in saying that the term sexy is 'problematic'.

Consenting adults are allowed to find each other sexy.

Sexy is used as an appraisal of appearance a judgement on (usually women) attire. It literally has nothing to do with couples choosing to be intimate. But you know that already. You’re making a spurious unrelated point.
