To want to know why Imogen Poots broke up with James Norton

Obviously absolutely none of my business, but I don’t think anyone in my real life knows who these people are, so I’m sharing it here in case anyone shares my mini obsession.

Imogen Poots is a gorgeous 35 year old British actress who was engaged to James Norton (I’m guessing I don’t need to explain here who he is), they broke up in the last year or so and he’s indicated in interviews that it wasn’t his choice.

She’s suggested in past interviews that she wants children (which JN has also said he does). Definitely none of my business - but honestly if you were a 35 year old woman who wants kids and you were engaged to JAMES NORTON, would you break up with him?

I know AIBU.

Can't say I'm very impressed by his Oirish accent in The House of Guiness having an Irish Dad.

I’m from NI which is obviously not Dublin, and thought his accent was fine. Certainly better than Pierce Brosnan’s in Mobland and he is Irish!

Did Sean Rafferty have an accent? Can’t say I noticed 😉😂

Anyone got any James chat? Excited he’s been cast as Brian Epstein in the Beatles movies, he’ll be great I think…

Did anyone see him in the Jessie Ware video? I was a bit wtf

Oh yes! I’d forgotten about that. TBH I didn’t think they had any chemistry, I could see what she was going for but it came off as two people trying to be sexy and not succeeding. Maybe the director’s fault? Quite like the song though.

I feel like he's boring

He was his sexiest as the wrong'un in happy valley

I remember thinking what a bad, sexy man

Irl he crosses his legs and speaks well, and probably cycles in Islington and raves about his sourdough starter

Edited

I'm astounded that men crossing their legs is such a 'red flag' for some people!

All the men I know do it - and personally, I find men manspreading, or sitting in any way with their legs wide apart really off-putting. It's as if they want to make themselves seem bigger and more threatening, somehow.

You learn something everyday on MN.

My ideal man. Swoon.

Really?? I mean, I suppose it’s a good thing we all have different tastes, but any single one of those things would put me off beyond the point of no return.

He’s very… neatly turned out, isn’t he? I’ve seen photos where his hair is tousled, but I get the impression that every hair has been exactly placed there to achieve that effect.

Yes, absolutely it would.

Not in terms of friendships. But as far as attraction goes, a well spoken accent would kill that for me.

Interesting, do you have a sense why? Is it a political thing, like you don’t like privately educated people? You don’t feel you’d have much in common? Or you just feel like he’s had life too easy? What is it that a posh accent conveys to you that puts you off?

I’ve heard he’s not very nice 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve met him, I worked with him, he was absolutely lovely.

I don’t know anything about him so cannot say if I would break up with him or not. Wanting children does not mean wanting them with anybody.

Have you been in a relationship with him?

catownerofthenorth · 25/05/2026 13:27

Relationships break up because of sex or money. Unlikely money here, he’s a decent prospect. So I am forced to conclude it was sex.

No, none of those things. Definitely no issues with politics or the privately educated. And it’s not thinking we’d have nothing in common (one of my friends is posh, really properly posh, and I love her dearly). Definitely not thinking he’s had it easy, either. I had it quite rough but I don’t have any chips on my shoulder about that sort of thing; good for him would be my attitude.

I couldn’t really tell you why. It just kills it for me in the same way as if I discovered they had no sense of humour. Or soft hands. Or they were a bit stupid (Not that I equate being well spoken with those things, they’re just quite high up in the list of things I find unattractive).

What a daft thing to say.

deeahgwitch · 25/05/2026 14:03

We are all so different @WilfredsPies
A well spoken English accent would be lovely to my Irish ears. 😀
I’d even put up with my least preferred accent in the world - Waterford in Ireland ( apologies to anyone from Waterford ) if it was James Norton 😀

I know someone who is an extra in lots of programmes. He said he is very nice. Steve Coogan isn't (found that quite gutting as I am a fan).

Have crossed paths with him for work lots of times over the years. Each time as nice if not nicer than the last. Maybe he just wants to remain an eligible bachelor.

It is also true that Steve Coogan isnt very nice at all.
