A sharp or even mild cheddar does not belong on top of an authentic Lasagna..

DH is calling me fussy and that I’m turning into my bat shit mother who will only eat straight chips because I am protesting that the flavours don’t go.

It’s doesn’t even melt the same FFS.

Who cares about "authentic"? Melted cheddar tastes delicious on lasagna and other tomato-based pasta dishes. Unless your nonna is going to spank you with her wooden spoon or you're entering a Tuscan cooking competition, why not?

And it's "me and DH", if you're going to be particular.

DramaAlpaca · 27/05/2025 17:15

I'm with you. The only acceptable cheese on top of lasagna is parmesan, and it's compulsory. And the white sauce should be bechamel, which doesn't include cheese.

vincettenoir · 27/05/2025 17:15

For me it would just depend on what I had in. If I only had cheddar, I could happily live with that.

Hollowvoice · 27/05/2025 17:15

I'm sure it's not authentic but I always used cheddar, because the people in my house prefer it that way

AndImBrit · 27/05/2025 17:16

We have cathedral city melted on top of every lasagne we ever make, so I’m team DH.

NetballHoop · 27/05/2025 17:16

I like a cheesy lasagna. Given a chance I'd have cheese on just about anything.

Obviously mild cheddar is awful and if that what your DH has used then you need to LTB pronto.

DoYouReally · 27/05/2025 17:17

Whoever is cooking gets the deciding vote, imo.

If someone has an issue with what I cook, then can feed themselves instead.

If someone is decent enough to cook for me, then it's not for me to dictate the recipe.

NImumconfused · 27/05/2025 17:18

I find cheddar makes it a bit oily sometimes, parmesan on top of bechamel is better.

DildoSaggins · 27/05/2025 17:20

Couldn't give a flying feck if its 'authentic' or not. Cheddar on top of a lasagne is fabulous!!!!

AlphaApple · 27/05/2025 17:21

there is no such thing as the wrong cheese. Cheese is always right.

Tiswa · 27/05/2025 17:21

Given I suspect that the rest is probably not authentic it comes down to taste - I love cheddar on top of mine

TinyTempest · 27/05/2025 17:21

Team DH here.

I mix loads of different cheeses.

Yep. This is right. However, I’d happily eat it with cheddar on the top. It would never be mild cheddar as it’s pointless. Only mature / extra. (Guessing you’re in the US using the “sharp” terminology?)

I would always make it with Parmesan or similar, because that’s how it should be made and it tastes best. But if someone else has made it I wouldn’t complain (though I’d be pointedly “helping” by grating the parmesan for them)

Olika · 27/05/2025 17:23

I don’t like cheese on top of a lasagna. Started making them without.

WhatNoRaisins · 27/05/2025 17:24

If it's homemade or something I've bought at a soft play then it's acceptable but if it's a restaurant one it's not.

saveforthat · 27/05/2025 17:24

Mild cheddar is absolutely awful. I don't mind a strong cheddar on a lasagna but prefer parmesan.

Yeah it’s just fusion cooking 😂

JudgeBread · 27/05/2025 17:26

Oh OP you'd hate me, I've been known to put slices of burger cheese on top of my lasagna. Yes the plastic orange stuff that's neon.

Who cares if it's authentic? Half my family is Italian and they couldn't give a shit how I eat my lasagna, even if it's a crime against their entire country.

If it's just something you genuinely don't like can you just have yours without cheese or has he already loaded the whole thing up?

hedgerunner · 27/05/2025 17:29

I always use a mixture of grated cheddar and mozzarella.

Stickortwigs · 27/05/2025 17:30

Cheddar is an excellent addition. In fact I rather like a cheddar and mozzarella mix.

ginasevern · 27/05/2025 17:30

I lived in Naples for years. I always put provolone piccante on my lasagna which is what they generally use. It doesn't have the greasiness of cheddar when melted. It's not commonly found over here and I buy mine from my local Italian deli. In the north of Italy they are more likely to just use parmesan.

BiggerBrighterBetter · 27/05/2025 17:34

I'm all about the cheese, so I make mine with a cheese sauce (mature cheddar) then top it with more cheddar AND parmesan. Delish.

WaltzingWaters · 27/05/2025 17:36

Sorry, team DH here. Melted cheddar makes everything better. But I mean, why stop there, add on cheddar and Parmesan!

FishChipsAndVinegarPlease · 27/05/2025 17:38

What is sharp cheese? 🫠

Delphiniumandlupins · 27/05/2025 17:39

Probably doesn't belong on an authentic lasagna. In fact, mild cheddar doesn't belong anywhere other than a child's plate. However, the correct response to anyone making lasagna is "Thank you very much".
