A sharp or even mild cheddar does not belong on top of an authentic Lasagna..

DH is calling me fussy and that I’m turning into my bat shit mother who will only eat straight chips because I am protesting that the flavours don’t go.

It’s doesn’t even melt the same FFS.

As opposed to what? Parmesan?

You're going to have to tell us the construction of the rest of the lasagne, so we can judge you it sufficiently.

Icanttakethisanymore · 27/05/2025 17:42

I say cheese makes everything better so chuck on what you got. No sane person buys mild cheddar though so eject that shit immediately .

Crinkle77 · 27/05/2025 17:43

Well its not authentic but still tastes good!

Icanttakethisanymore · 27/05/2025 17:43

Delphiniumandlupins · 27/05/2025 17:39

Probably doesn't belong on an authentic lasagna. In fact, mild cheddar doesn't belong anywhere other than a child's plate. However, the correct response to anyone making lasagna is "Thank you very much".

I don’t give my children mild cheddar, because I don’t hate them and I think they deserve nice cheese

Hwi · 27/05/2025 17:43

Whoever is Italian among the two of you, wins.

BunnyLake · 27/05/2025 17:44

I put whatever grated cheese I have at hand, cheddar and/or mozzarella.

And Parmesan sprinkled on top. But I don’t make lasagne anymore, I just buy M&S nowadays.

Mareleine · 27/05/2025 17:44

It's lasagne ffs.

Bourbonversuscustardcream · 27/05/2025 17:45

You’d hate me then - I use mozzarella. Nothing about my lasagne bears much resemblance to anything authentic. I wouldn’t serve it to an Italian but my kids like it this way.

I’ll agree that Parmesan and cheddar are not interchangeable, but which tastes better in what is just personal preference.

BunnyLake · 27/05/2025 17:46

AlphaApple · 27/05/2025 17:21

there is no such thing as the wrong cheese. Cheese is always right.

I wouldn’t fancy blue cheese on it.

Hwi · 27/05/2025 17:46

It is such a shame that we never get posts about spousal disagreements about Boccaccio, but only about Focaccia and similar shite. Brings the tone down, food, sex, food, sex, money, sex, money, food and perceived privilege. But I am still hopeful.

AnonWho23 · 27/05/2025 17:47

Who's cooking the lasagna? My rule us if I cook it you STFU and don't comment..

mintydoggyv · 27/05/2025 17:47

In the larger world does one need to fall out over it personally l like cheddar and parimsan cheese . Stop falling out how can you stay married for 60 years let's have harmony

Hankunamatata · 27/05/2025 17:48

Cheddar fan and also use bisto cheese sauce as really not a fan white sauce

FatOaf · 27/05/2025 17:48

I'd be very disappointed by a lasagne that didn't have grated cheese on top, which should include cheddar as well as any mozzarella, etc. Same goes for pizza. I don't care whether it's authentic: I'm not Italian. I am also very happy to see Yorkshire puddings on any roast dinner, regardless of which meat is featured, and enjoy balti, which has no connection to the Indian subcontinent.

The taste of cheddar definitely does go with tomato & garlic.

pizzaHeart · 27/05/2025 17:49

Extra mature cheddar is the right answer for everything.
Mild cheddar should be forbidden as a waste of precious resources.

Purplecatshopaholic · 27/05/2025 17:51

Cheese of any description is always right! However in my house we like a mature cheddar on lasagne.

MrsEmmelinePankhurst · 27/05/2025 17:53

Authentic this, authentic that ….. it’s lasagne with an e af the end! Not lasagna with an a. Ma che cazzo.

Italians wouldn’t use cheddar.

TheGhostOfPatButcher · 27/05/2025 17:54

I do like a bit of lasagne with my vintage cheddar.

InterruptingRabbit · 27/05/2025 17:55

Are you “protesting that the flavours don’t go” when he’s cooked lasagna? If so, YABVU.

If you are cooking the lasagna and want to put something other than cheddar on, then fine. Up to you.

But I do think it’s slightly nonsensical to claim that cheddar doesn’t go with a tomato based sauce.

YourSignalFadedIntoAnotherWorld · 27/05/2025 17:57

YABU for thinking about mild cheddar, typing the words mild cheddar and even considering that it falls into the category of cheese. It is appalling salty rubber and not even an actual foodstuff so YABU. Very YABU.

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/05/2025 17:58

I go for BOTH. A mature Cheddar that has a bit of bite for the sauce and then a dusting of parmesan on serving.

Cheddar from Cheddar - the place- is rubbish. Just use Cathedral City...

BobbyBiscuits · 27/05/2025 18:04

There's loads of different recipes for lasagne, and any other popular dish. Of course cheddar wouldn't feature in an Italian 'Nonna's' recipe as they don't have that cheese widely in Italy, or at least they didn't back in the day. Doesn't mean it won't taste nice though!

But just put what you like, or what you have in the fridge. Any hard cheese would be fine I think.

If he hates it then put cheddar on one side and a different cheese on the other?

100% this!

I have some children in my life who prefer mild cheese so I try not to judge them. Hopefully they grow out of it.
