A sharp or even mild cheddar does not belong on top of an authentic Lasagna..

DH is calling me fussy and that I’m turning into my bat shit mother who will only eat straight chips because I am protesting that the flavours don’t go.

It’s doesn’t even melt the same FFS.

I sprinkle top with 50/50 parmesan and grated strong cheddar 😘 and I give zero fucks if others do it differently - you do you.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 27/05/2025 18:46

Mine last night had cheddar and parmesan on top ... it was scrumptious!

I’m definitely not American, Ironically I live very near Cheddar Gorge, however I didn’t realise describing a strong Cheddar as sharp was such no-no!

DH is cooking under my watchful eye as of yet no cheddar has made a disappearance!

Bossy cow

PeopleWillAlwaysNeedPlates · 27/05/2025 18:53

I don't care about your cheese choices but it's 'DH and me'. Your pronoun is the object of the sentence and takes the accusative case.

UnctuousUnicorns · 27/05/2025 18:53

MrsClatterbuck · 27/05/2025 18:35

I use a mixture of mature cheddar and mozzarella plus parmesan. And horrors of horrors use a cheese sauce instead of bechamel. Actually mine is not really lasagna but a recipe by Delia where you mix the ragu with cooked penne pasta and sauce as stated I use cheese. Put into lasagne dish and put cheese on top then pop into the oven. Very similar. Has always gone down a treat.

Edited

Tbf, that's a pasta bake, not a lasagne. Nowt wrong with either (veggie in my case). 😋

Imisscoffee2021 · 27/05/2025 18:55

Authentic, no. But it is delicious.

PointsSouth · 27/05/2025 18:57

DramaAlpaca · 27/05/2025 17:15

I'm with you. The only acceptable cheese on top of lasagna is parmesan, and it's compulsory. And the white sauce should be bechamel, which doesn't include cheese.

This'll upset you...

The American contingent in our house insists that lasagne involves no white sauce at all. Italian Americans use ricotta. And it has become very clear to me that you'll never convince a New Jersey lasagne-chef otherwise.

steff13 · 27/05/2025 18:59

I like A LOT of cheese on my lasagna - ricotta, mozzarella, and Romano. Never cheddar. I'm team OP.

PetiteBlondeDuBoulevardBrune · 27/05/2025 19:00

Try grated emmenthal and proper bechamel sauce, you won’t go back to cheddar!

Pancakeflipper · 27/05/2025 19:06

Mild cheddar is a waste of space/calories

TerrysCIockworkOrange · 27/05/2025 19:08

I agree with you but if someone else is cooking for me I couldn’t care less 😂

Spirallingdownwards · 27/05/2025 19:09

Cheddar and parmesan together is better

Beeloux · 27/05/2025 19:09

I made lasagna tonight and put cheddar, mozzarella and Parmesan on it.😅I don’t really care if it’s not authentic, I cook what myself and my kids will eat.

StupidBoy · 27/05/2025 19:12

I know that you are absolutely correct, but this is one of those situations where taste trumps authenticity. A lasagne is better for having a decent cheddar on top and it's better for having some cheese in the sauce instead of a plain bechamel. Sorry Italians, but it just is.

So what do you suggest

knittasgonna · 27/05/2025 19:14

Well, we all have our quirks. Personally, I think cheddar is fine inside a lasagna, but I prefer mozzarella or an Italian blend on top. However, I like cottage cheese inside my lasagna, as well, and I know that's a no-no for many. I think whoever cooks it gets to choose.

StupidBoy · 27/05/2025 19:14

Pancakeflipper · 27/05/2025 19:06

Mild cheddar is a waste of space/calories

Totally agree. And it works out more expensive in cooking a cheese sauce because you need to use twice as much to get any cheese flavour at all.

loobyloo1979 · 27/05/2025 19:15

Cheddar belongs on lasagne (along with Parmesan!) Team DH!!!!

Who cares about "authentic"? Melted cheddar tastes delicious on lasagna and other tomato-based pasta dishes. Unless your nonna is going to spank you with her wooden spoon or you're entering a Tuscan cooking competition, why not?

And it's "me and DH", if you're going to be particular.

DH and me, surely? Definitely 'me' in this instance, though.

kalokagathos · 27/05/2025 19:16

We love strong in-your-face cheeses so add strong cheddar and Parmesan. Delicious 😋 Team Husband here

stayathomer · 27/05/2025 19:16

lasagne never tastes better out than it does when you cook it at home and I think this is why- imo you can’t beat cheddar on a lasagne (runs and hides!)

If my DH was cooking for me I’d leave him to it and be grateful for the break from cooking lol

But DH cooks every night, if I was not to give him direction how would he know my preferences?!

DH and me, surely? Definitely 'me' in this instance, though.

It doesn't matter grammatically where I, I mean me, sits in the sentence. What matters is whether I'm the subject or the object. I am the object in this case; the argument is being had, and the objects it is having itself on are me and my DH.

You can always check by eliminating the other party. "He's having an argument with I" - obviously wrong. "He's having an argument with me" - correct.
