To ban wind chimes

tinyme77 · 25/05/2025 08:39

My neighbours bought pan pipey wind chimes earlier this year and on this windy day, sitting in my house with the window open I can hear that they have now bought us all (the neighbours) the more conventional wind-f'ing-chimes. It frustrates me because it is constant (unlike a noisy party). Do they think that we can't hear or that we all love the toot-te-toot?

Might they agree to switch off their hot tub at certain times, if you do the same with the wind chimes (well not switch them off but YKWIM).
Makes me groan when people move their own noisy objects so they can't hear them but other people can!

No. We asked them if they could turn it off at night, as this is when it really disturbs us, and they said no, it wouldn’t be ready for them to use when they want to if they did. As soon as the hot tub goes 🤞 so will the wind chimes!

Much sympathy. I hate that low rumbling noise especially at night.

Mumsnetters just like banning things. While their husbands swan off on their mysterious hobby which is too outing to name, mumsnetters have a hobby of thinking of things to ban. Ban this, this that. Dogs, cats, saying grace, shoes, cars, etc.

Are people on mumsnet really representative of society? Are people really as grumpy about everything their neighbours do as they seem on here?

This. How do people get through life ?

Katisha · 25/05/2025 11:53

I don't know whether I qualify as representative of society. But I do remember being driven to immense frustration by next door's wind chimes. I think it's utterly antisocial to inflict it on your neighbours.
And actually I think the attitude of "I dont care I can do what i want" is unfortunately probably more representative of society now than those who can imagine what impact their choices might have on those around them. Eg listening to devices on public transport without headphones.

Hearing them all night as you try to sleep is different though, right? I like a piano but I don’t want someone hitting 4 notes repeatedly all night when I’m trying to sleep?

I like it, I find it relaxing

JudgeJ · 25/05/2025 21:30

Ddakji · 25/05/2025 09:56

At night when you’re trying to sleep?

If that's the loudest noise you hear when trying to sleep then you're lucky!

Or we were being considerate of our neighbours by not having wind chimes - until they showed that they had the attitude that they don't care and will do what they want. So, if you can't beat them join them? I'll give the same consideration I'm given, so now enjoy my wind chimes.

After one particularly windy night my friend found her wind chimes cut down and lying on her patio. She was most put out. I laughed and told her to leave them where they were. They were clearly really annoying the neighbours.

Mine can't be reached by the neighbours. 😀

The thing is… it is really annoying to have other people’s nose foisted on you when you just want a bit of peace. I have terrible insomnia, so yes, I’d be raging if some stupid wind chimes woke me up when I’d actually got to sleep!

Yes, it is very annoying to have people's noise foisted on you. I still wouldn't have wind chimes if my neighbour's hadn't foisted their noise on me, so it's on them for making me feel okay about it.

CheezePleeze · 25/05/2025 22:02

I hate them and the selfish fuckers who own them.

I no more want to listen to someone's wind chimes all night, than I would their barking dog or their loud music.

Itiswhysofew · 25/05/2025 22:03

YANBU, they are a total noise nuisance.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 25/05/2025 22:16

Thank you for the kind offer, @ProtectTransRights While I could deal with the children, I'm unsure as to whether or not my fence could withstand being hit with a football once, never mind repeatedly. It has been ravaged by woodworm, and Mr Fencing Man is too busy to replace it yet. It is a wonder it didn't just blow over in the wind last night, but perhaps it was the ivy and my reinforcements that saved it! Thus, I'm afraid you'll have to keep your neighbours and their football for the time being 😆

Has anyone else got visions of various MNetters sneaking around their neighbourhoods with scissors, hacking at windchimes, in the dark tonight...?

SparklyGlitterballs · 25/05/2025 22:21

Oh goody, the annual wind chimes pile on 😁

I too have the bronze Woodstock chimes. They have a lovely deep melody, not high pitched or tinkly. I also have a long garden and they're hung at the bottom under a sheltered tree, a good 50ft away from windows. I enjoy them when I'm out gardening but did tie them up today as it was exceptionally windy.

I have one neighbour with loud, screamy kids. Another neighbour plays a radio all day every day from his garden office. Loud enough for you to get the base and muffled talking, but not loud enough to enjoy the music. I don't think my noise is any worse than theirs.

CiaoMeow · 25/05/2025 22:21

I love a nice, tinkly windchime. The pan pipe ones, not so much.

I would love a tinkler, as I think they sound quite magical, but the I don't have one because I don't want to upset the neighbours!

Why, what on earth should I expect to hear in the night? I’m not living in a war zone. Some people might think zone 2 London is similar but the most I hear is foxes screeching occasionally in the mating season.

Whatwouldnanado · 25/05/2025 23:00

Wind chimes, loud music, stinky fire pits, stinky vapes and fags all equally annoying. If you like them keep them indoors.

SALaw · 25/05/2025 23:00

@IdiottoGoathats fine that you like it. But it’s loud enough for folk that don’t like it to hear. I knew someone whose husband had to watch The Simpsons to get to sleep. He liked it, found it relaxing. Doesn’t mean it’s reasonable to broadcast it to neighbours from your backgarden throughout the night every night

Maybe he plays the radio to drown out the noise of the wind chimes

Thank you. Have enjoyed reading all your comments especially the ones that agree with me! (But good to hear why people do have them) I think that the solution is to have wind chimes that have a control which means that they are off unless the owner is in the garden. Or I am allowed to take the scissors to them.

No, you are not allowed to take the scissors to them.

I agree to silencing them at night but I don't want to hear them when I'm in the garden only. I love to hear them when I'm in my home during the day. That said, my windchimes don't actually go that often as it's not generally that windy, so it's still special to me when they actually do put on a show. I'd probably be happy to give up hearing them inside the house if they put on a show every time I went outside. But that would mean they're sounding more often and for longer, so might be worse if you're a neighbour that doesn't like them.

I took parcel tape to some windchimes one night when I was staying at a holiday destination.

Mind you, the place was empty but that was just as well as I'm not sure how polite I would've been to the owners at 2am.

TokyoSushi · 25/05/2025 23:40

Our neighbour has them, they honestly make me feel murderous.

But we have a dog who occasionally barks (although he is very closely monitored!) so there’s not much I can do…
