To ban wind chimes

My neighbours bought pan pipey wind chimes earlier this year and on this windy day, sitting in my house with the window open I can hear that they have now bought us all (the neighbours) the more conventional wind-f'ing-chimes. It frustrates me because it is constant (unlike a noisy party). Do they think that we can't hear or that we all love the toot-te-toot?

I do love hearing them at night and would love to hang some outside my bedroom window. But there are neighbours with bedroom windows on that side so I'm not.

So you’re fine with something that could constantly wake you up throughout the night every time there’s a slightly gust of wind?
Well, you do you.
I love how everyone on here knows exactly where their neighbours are sleeping.

They are relaxing at night aren't they.

Yes, they are. Quality chimes though, not cheap, tuneless ones.

I've been in their house. I know the layout.

I thought I was alone in not understanding the MN chime hatred! I will agree to banning them if we can also ban screeching children and yapping dogs from gardens in Summer.

Yes yapping dogs and children screeching for hours and hours on end should be banned too. Five minutes of either is fine though, just like five minutes of a wind chime would be fine.

the noise from wind chimes can constitute a statutory noise nuisance under the EPA 1990. Never got as far as prosecutions on this when I was an EHO but served a couple of notices to get them taken down and/or relocated. People can be so thoughtless at times.

TFMinx · 25/05/2025 10:03

I hate wind chimes and all their jingly-jangliness. I unfortunately hiccuped and pressed YABU on your poll instead of YANBU, so now I look like one of those weird wind chimes lovers. Balls.

Welcome to the chime club

Not in my area. Besides, I can relocate them and just get bigger ones to compensate for them being further away.

if you are in England or Wales then the EPA 1990 statutory nuisance provisions are law. you can also take your own legal action under what we used to call S99. if your council refuse to act then you can do a freedom of information act request or refer to the local govt ombudsman

Weedresistantmembrane · 25/05/2025 10:06

One of our neighbours used to have them. They went well with all the bits of engine and shite in his garden. We live in quite a windy area, so it was less tinkling and more frenzied clanging akin to small children allowed unsupervised access to a xylophone.

I'm not.

I have Woodstock brand too. They're really lovely chimes.

TimeForTeaAndToast · 25/05/2025 10:09

I hate them.

Koalafan · 25/05/2025 10:10

For anyone with misphonia they're a nightmare. I can learn to cope with necessary noise, but those are so unnecessary!

PawsAndTails · 25/05/2025 10:12

I got annoyed when I first got my windchimes as it was very still for ages. I stuck a speaker outside and streamed windchime sounds for a bit because I wanted to hear them, darn it!

Are people on mumsnet really representative of society? Are people really as grumpy about everything their neighbours do as they seem on here?

No, they aren't representative of society. MN seems to attract people who have no social skills and think the world revolves around them.

You think the people who do their best to be considerate of their neighbours are the ones with no social skills? 🤣🤣🤣

Better wind chimes than hot tub motors.

Exactly!! This is why we have them! Neighbours refuse to move their hot tub, or turn it off at night, having been told the constant hum disturbs us at night, so they can put up with our wind-chimes now.

Ah!! Perhaps you could do a deal? How about arranging a virtual or actual meeting with some your neighbours about noise generally?

TulipCat · 25/05/2025 10:56

I bloody hate wind chimes. Our neighbours had some in their back garden that used to keep us awake on windy nights. Their bedroom was at the front - they never got woken up by it so apparently it wasn't a problem. Tossers.

We have spoken to them. They told us they can’t hear the hot tub (and that they moved it to where it is now because it used to annoy them in its previous position) so they won’t be moving it back. So we put some wind chimes up 🤷‍♀️ and don’t really care if they annoy them.

I like my wind chimes 🎵

You might, but the constant noise might not please others.

Might they agree to switch off their hot tub at certain times, if you do the same with the wind chimes (well not switch them off but YKWIM).
Makes me groan when people move their own noisy objects so they can't hear them but other people can!
